The occurrence of different types of hemoglobin variants in India has been well-documented in urban populations and in certain tribal areas. Beta-thalassaemia and hemoglobins D,E,H,S, and rare variants like Hb Lepore, have been found in varying percentages. There is a higher incidence of Hb E in the Eastern region and of Hb D in certain Northern populations. The association of Hb E with beta thalassaemia G6PD deficiency has been established. The relationship with other environmental factors, like malaria, is not yet clear.
Total protein patterns of amniotic fluid samples of different age groups, following polyacrylamide disc gel electrophoresis, showed a wide range of variation in early pregnancy, but no two cases had identical banding, indenticating their genetic variability. An assessment has been made here of the total protein, albumin and transferrin patterns from normal fluids of different age groups by gel electrophoresis, in order to observe the genetic variations and relationship with foetal age, if any.

A series of 200 normal serum samples obtained from healthy blood donors belonging to different religious communities and casters were examined for transferrin phenotypes by vertical polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. Of these, 196 showed the common CC phenotype, while 4 showed CD phenotype, without any correlation with the caste or community. In another study involving 102 cases of malignancy, no relationship was observed between th transferrin phenotype and the type of malignancy, except in the case of Hodgkin's disease, which showed B2C phenotype.

The distribution of haptoglobin (Hp) phenotypes in patients with different types of cancer was compared with those in the normal population, with the aid of vertical disc polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis. The Hp1 gene frequency (0.0647) of the normal population exhibited only a slight difference from that of the cancer patients, as against previous records. The only appreciable difference was in the range of mobility of the Hp2 bands from the origin in individuals with Hp 2-1 and 2-2 phenotypes.
Akaline phosphatase activity following polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of human sera obtained from normal populations in the Eastern India shows a correlation between the presence of p++ phenotypes with the B and O blood groups only in females. The incidence of additional bands in the beta-lipoprotein zone is much higher in female samples than in males. The frequencies of both p++ and p+ henotypes within the different endogamous communities and castes are rather variable. Electorphoresis following heat treatment of sera obtained from pregnant females shows the complete absence of p++ and p+, as also of bands at the beta-lipoprotein zones in them.
Polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis of sera obtained from normal individuals shows an incidence (33%) of double and triple bands of alkaline phosphatase in the beta-lipoprotein zone in addition to the usual ones near beta-globulin. The correlation between the occurrence of a slow moving band in addition to the normal one, of different intensities, p+ and p++ with O and B groups has been further confirmed. No relationship was observed between the width or the number of bands with the total amount of alkaline prosphatase as determined biochemically.

Retrospective study was carried out in 1,15,851 consecutive births in five hospitals, and prospective study of 10,415 consecutive births in one hospital of West Bengal. The overall frequency of congenital defects was 4.42/1000 live births. Incidence of NTD and talipes was predominant in rainy season, whereas cleft palate with/without hare lip had highest frequency during winter. Incidence of these anomalies decreased with increasing birth order. The frequency was noted to decline with increasing maternal age, 21-25 years age group had maximum number of malformed babies. Sex ratio and religion, however, did not have any correlation with the incidence of these malformations. When comparison was done between urban and rural population no statistically significant variation was observed.
