Nutrition, physical activity and health status in Middle and East European countries.

In the Middle- and East-European countries the political, economic and social situation changed fundamentally in 1989 and 1990. These alterations are reflected in markers of dietary intake, physical activity and health with a trend similar in Czechia, East Germany, Lithuania and Poland. Thus, the previous increase in energy consumption stopped and was followed by a decline. The increasing preference for a lower level of activity is demonstrated by the number of private cars clearly accelerating its rate of growth after the change. Life expectancy had been increasing during the eighties only slightly. After the change the yearly increase became higher than before. The rate difference is higher in men than in women. Beginning from 1991 the CVD mortality decreased considerably.

[Changes in the energy and nutrient intake of the population in the first year of German reunification--results of a model study in Potsdam].

A nutritional model study was carried out in Potsdam from December 1990 until December 1991 involving 222 persons at the beginning. Changes of the energy and nutrient intake were evaluated. The trends established in 1991-demonstrated by means of two specific trend parameters-have been discussed with regard to the results of the nutritional situation in the former GDR. First signs for an improvement of nutritional situation were visible (e.g., increase of consumption of vitamin A, ascorbic acid and calcium as well as decrease of consumption of energy and cholesterol).

[Specific features of nutrition of some household groups in the former GDR--a final documentation].

Existing data of nutrition surveys made in individual households of the former GDR were processed and interpreted in order to characterize nutrition of individual population groups. The results revealed some remarkable differences in food consumption as well as energy and nutrient intake: in households of members of agricultural production cooperatives (especially on account of feeding this products to animals) as well as higher consumption of foodstuffs from their own production (in particular eggs, fruit and vegetables); higher food consumption in small households (predominantly in pensioner households); more frequent participation of employed persons (persons from households of workers/clerks [office workers], and members of agricultural production cooperatives) in communal feeding; excessive intake of energy and fat, in particular in pensioners.

Important endoparasites in sheep and goat flocks in Jordan.

In spring 1992 in Jordan 70 flocks of sheep and goats were investigated coproscopically. 838 of altogether 882 small ruminants (= 95.01%) harboured endoparasites. In three different parts of the country--in the vicinities of Ma'an, Kerak and Amman--the results were similar (Dictyocaulus, Nematodirus, Moniezia) or they differed (protostrongylids, Marshallagia and other trichostrongylids, Eimeria). In connection with the established parasite status remarks concerning the therapy, including the problems involved as well as remarks concerning the time of treatment in the investigated area will be made. Finally, suggestions will be made for important and specialized follow-up studies regarding improvement of the situation in this country.

[The nutrition situation of the population in the former East Germany: results of household budget surveys in 1989].

The last representative nutritional surveys in households of the former GDR date back to 1989. Trends towards excessive energy intake have continued, resulting, above all, from high fat consumption. A considerable proportion of employed persons have their meals outside the home. The proportion of food used as animal feed was high in households of members of agricultural cooperatives.

[Cystic adenoma of the pancreas].

Cystic neoplasms of the pancreas are rare. These tumors are differentiated into benign and potentially malignant types or in serous (microcystic), solid-cystic (papillary-cystic) and mucinouscystic neoplasms. A report is given about a 76 years old women with a serous (microcystic) cystadenoma. The cystadenoma was a chance hit of a necropsy.

[The informativeness of 2-month surveys of food consumption in private households].

All-year surveys of the food consumption in private households are very laborious. They may be simplified by shortening the period of time covered by the survey. 712 surveys taken in 1974 led to the conclusion that surveys covering only two months (April and August) permit to make statements the validity of which is but slightly inferior to that of an all-year survey. Of the 45 food groups considered, only 5 (potatoes, fresh vegetables, fresh fruit, tropical and subtropical fruit, and sugar) play an important role as to the selection of suitable months for such a survey.

Bases and consequences of the newly recommended daily intakes of vitamins for the population of the German Democratic Republic.

In 1977 the official recommendations of the GDR for the daily intakes of essential nutrients were revised and extended. The criteria used to establish the revision and the extension in regard to the recommended vitamin intakes are given. For assessing the adequacy of food supplies and intakes vitamin intake data from national food consumption surveys and the weighted average recommended intakes for the entire population were compared. To give a true representation of vitamin amounts actually consumed, different forms of calculating losses on the way from harvesting or producing foods to the gullet have been applied. With the exception of tocopherol the daily intake of all vitamins considered permanently increased within the 10 years' period regarded, and the average levels of vitamin intake may appear satisfactory. Nevertheless, it is not valid to conclude that the vitamin needs of all individuals have been met.

[Methodological bases of the nutritional-physiological assessment of the per capita consumption of foods. I. Recording and characterization of the per capita consumption].

Per capita consumption indices are reference points essential to the provision of foods and the planning of food consumption. From them global statements regarding the energy and nutrient supply can be deduced. But this requires the exact definition of the per capita consumption indices with regard to the recording level, subitems and average losses. The mode of calculation and the assortment of each of the presented food groups are characterized in detail and estimate values for the occurring losses are indicated which are needed for the nutritional-physiological balancing of the per capita consumption indices.

[Methodological bases of the nutritional-physiological assessment of the per capita consumption of foods. 2. Nutritional-physiological assessment of the per capita consumption].

The different items of the per caput consumption (cf. Part I) are evaluated from the viewpoint of nutritional physiology, and the average energy and nutrient supply of the total population is calculated and compared with the recommended dietary allowances. The nutritional status of the population is globally assessed. A reduction in calorie and fat consumption seems desirable, which will be promoted by a better supply of calorie-reduced products. Further food modifications, e.g., in the form of protein, vitamin and mineral fortifications, are not necessary for the average population.

[Food substitution and consumption development].

Though being sometimes less in evidence, the food consumption of the population is undergoing a continuous change in course of time. It can be considered as a matual substitution of foods. In most cases, the increase in consumption of certain foods is correlated with the decrease in consumption of other foods. The author points to the contents, principles and examples of food substitutions that had been revealed by studies using a linear optimization model.
