Fulminant hepatic failure caused by adenovirus infection following bone marrow transplantation for Hodgkin's disease.

Adenoviruses are increasingly realised to be responsible for serious morbidity and mortality following allogeneic bone marrow transplantation. We describe a case of fulminant hepatic failure due to adenovirus serotype 2 in a 39-year-old woman who received a matched sibling allogeneic bone marrow transplant for multiply relapsed Hodgkin's disease. Isolated fulminant hepatic failure caused by this serotype of adenovirus has not previously been described.

Sympathetic orchiopathia--an experimental and clinical study.

An experimental and a clinical study have been performed to elucidate the nature of contralateral testicular damage following unilateral testicular injury--sympathetic orchiopathia. In an experimental study significant impairment of sperm production was produced by contralateral testicular damage which did not seem to be immunologically mediated or to involve the breakdown of the "blood-testis" barrier. In 5 subfertile patients with oligozoospermia and unilateral testicular damage, removal of the damaged testicle did not result in an improvement in their semen analysis.

The blood-testis barrier in men of diverse fertility status: an ultrastructural study.

The permeability of the blood-testis barrier was studied in 41 men of diverse fertility status by observing the distribution of lanthanum, and electron-opaque tracer administered during immersion fixation of testicular biopsies. Evidence for barrier mechanisms operating at the specialised tight junctions between Sertoli cells was seen in all specimens. In approximately one half of the seminiferous tubules examined this barrier appeared to be less effective as seen by the penetration of lanthanum past the Sertoli cell tight junctions. This phenomenon was found to be significantly related to both the tubular spermatogenetic activity as measured by a scoring method and the presence of subcellular changes in the Sertoli cells. A depression of spermatogenesis was associated with an increase in the incidence of tubules with apparently defective tight junctions. In men with obstructive azoospermia there was no increase in the incidence of this phenomenon.

The ultrastructure of the male and female prostate of Praomys (Mastomys) natalensis. I. Normal, castrated and ovariectomised animals.

Male ventral and female prostates of Praomys (Mastomys) natalensis were examined with the electron microscope. The findings support and add to information obtained with the light microscope on tissues from normal, castrated and ovariectomised animals. Our results indicate that although the female prostate may be considered a homologue of the male ventral ventral prostate anatomically and histologically, there are differences in sub-cellular morphology and hormone dependence. Cells of the intact ventral prostate of the male are characterised by prominent dilated Golgi vesicles and electron-dense "mature secretory granules" seen in the apical region of the cell. In the cells of the female prostate these features are absent. These morphological differences reflect the influence of hormones upon the cells, as shown by the reduction of the dilated Golgi vesicles in the castrated male and conversely, their occasional presence in the cells of the oestrous female. Comparison of castrated and ovariectomised animals shows that the male ventral prostate is much more dependent on androgens than the female is on ovarian hormones. There are several modes of secretion in the male ventral and the female prostate. These are by acellular and cellular blebbing, by a variety of secretory vesicles into the acinar lumina, and by a system of "double walled" vesicles not previously described.
