[Compensatory reactions of the rabbit respiratory system to hypoxic stimulation in hyperbaric conditions].

Two series of experiments were performed with awake rabbits to study ventilatory reactions of the respiratory system to hypoxic stimulus. Two types of tests included alternating exposure to hypoxic mixture with 14%, 12%, and 10% of O2 (for 10 min) and rebreathing (12% O2 + 4.5% CO2) with concurrent sampling of arterial blood for gas analysis. The experiments were performed under the atmospheric pressure and in the nitrogen-oxygen air at 0.6, 1.0, 1.3, 1.5, 2.0, and 3.0 MPa. Both of the tests disclosed a distinct reduction of pulmonary ventilation gain in hyperbaric conditions due to inhalation of a hypoxic mixture. In the experiment with alternating exposure to hypoxic mixtures the gain reduction was gradual and correlated with a pressure rise. During rebreathing, hypoxemia appeared as early as the first minutes of experiment. PaCO2 grew by the end of exposure and abrupt inhibition of the ventilatory reaction occurred even at 0.6 MPa. Sharp degrees of hypoxemia during rebreathing seemed to suppress the respiratory center to the extent at which the reaction to hypoxia became weaker rather than stronger and was manifested by a sudden attenuation. These results suggest that hyperbaric conditions reduce the ventilatory reaction to hypoxia and balancing potentials of the respiratory system, and impair the respiration controls.

[The characteristics of the reaction of the rabbit respiratory system to CO2 under hyperbaric conditions].

Under the increase of the nitrogen-oxygen mixture pressure from 6.13 to 30.0 kg/cm2, the respiratory response to a hypercapnic stimulus weakened in alert rabbits: the total increase of the lung ventilation decreased, and the ventilatory response of the respiratory system in hyperbaric conditions occurred in great values of the PaCO2. The data obtained suggest that the hyperbarism both suppresses the lung ventilation and disturbs the regulation of respiration due to a high density of the inhaled gas mixture rather than to nitrogen's narcotic effect.

[Oxygen transport properties of blood in the presence of excess oxygen in the body].

Concentration of 2,3-DPC was decreased in erythrocytes and the plasma erythropoietic activity was reduced in rats in hyperoxia as well as in rats with the post-transfusional and posthypoxic polycythemia. The data obtained suggest changes of both the oxygen transport properties of the blood and the erythropoiesis in order to limit the oxygen supply of tissues under conditions of excessive oxygen in the organism.

[Changes in the oxygen transport properties of the blood of animals after a stay in a high-density normoxic gas environment].

For 24 hrs after exposure of rats to normoxic nitrogen-oxygen mixture of high density, concentration of hemoglobin, the hematocrit value, the number of erythrocytes, the contents of 2,3-DPG in erythrocytes, and the plasma erythropoietic activity were increased. Within 72 hrs after the exposure the above parameters returned to normal. The data obtained suggest that rats exposed to normoxic nitrogen-oxygen mixture of high density develop compensatory changes of the blood O2-properties and erythropoiesis as the result of hypoxia and oriented to improvement of tissue oxygen supply.

2,3-Diphosphoglycerate↗

[Indices of the oxygen-transport properties of the blood and of erythropoiesis in rats after being in a nitrogen-oxygen environment under elevated pressure].

Rats staying for a long time in nitrogen-oxygen mixture under high pressure develop changes in the blood oxygen-transporting properties and in erythropoiesis indicating state of hypoxia and tending to improve oxygen supply in tissues. Remote consequences of the hyperbaria tell even within 3 days after its cessation.

[Reaction of the external respiration system to a hypercapnic stimulus in rabbits under increased pressure].

In 10 unanesthetized rabbits exposed to normoxic (PIO2 = 0.2 kgs/cm2) helio-oxygen medium under pressure 40 kgs/cm2, changes of the respiration parameters (frequency, Vt, V, ITP) depending on the CO2 tension in the blood were studied with the aid of the recurrent respiration technique. The animals both in hyperbaric and in normal conditions (air), when breathing from the sack up to 7 min, revealed a linear increase in V due to an increase of the CO2 tension in the blood, but the lung ventilation increment decreased by the 12th min. In the helio-oxygen mixture under hyperbaric conditions the V relative increment was lesser and its decrease by the 12th min was more obvious than in ordinary air under the atmospheric pressure.

[Changes in the respiration of rabbits in a high pressure nitrogen-oxygen mixture].

In 14 unanesthetized rabbits, the parameters and the work of respiration, the electrical activity of respiratory muscles, the oxyhemoglobin content in the arterial blood, and the oxygen available in the cerebral cortex were studied in conditions of nitrogen-oxygen mixture (PO=0.2 kgc/cm2) under increased pressure: 6, 10, 20, 30, and 40 kgc/cm2. The 6 kgc/cm2 pressure decreased the lung ventilation, intensified the work of respiration and the electrical activity of external intercostal muscles. The 20--30 kgc/cm2 pressure entailed a gradual drop of the oxyhemoglobin content in the arterial blood and of the oxygen available in the cortex. The 40 kgc/cm2 pressure stopped the breathing in rabbits within 10--30 min. The data obtained reveal a limit of the increase in the density of inspired gas which for rabbits seems to be about 51.29 g/l.
