[Increased intraocular pressure provoked by a water test].

This study recorded the effects on ocular pressure of drinking a half liter of water in 5 min. Of the 324 subjects, treated or nontreated, presenting an ocular pressure greater than 18, the results after 15 min were as follows: a pressure rise between 3 and 4 points in 28.5% of the cases; a rise of between 5 and 6 points in 13.5% of the cases and, in 8% of the cases, a rise of more than 6 points. These figures were approximately the same for all ages and, to a lesser degree, for subjects at risk with normal ocular pressures. This transitory variation in pressure which recurs with the ingestion of liquids during meals might play an aggravating role in cases of glaucoma-induced nerve head ischemia with or without high ocular pressure.

[Evaluation of 524 cervicoencephalic Doppler studies in ocular pathology].

524 persons showing pathological ocular symptoms (hypertony, transient amaurosis, macular alterations, retinal vascular alterations, pigmentary retinopathy) underwent a cervicoencephalic Doppler test with echotomography. The results confirm the frequency and importance, in many cases, of latent cervicoencephalic degeneration: 12-27% of the subjects had important or very important atheromatous vessels, 25-42% with carotid endarterial plates, 1-10% with carotid stenosis (higher than 80%), 12-24% with alterations of the ophthalmic arteries. Such a noninvasive investigation is a very useful means to explore the hemodynamic and physiological status of the vascular surroundings of the eye and of the central arteries of the retina; it could be a very valuable tool for preventive and curative therapy.

[Cervico-encephalic vascular ultrasonography Doppler examination and ophthalmoscopy (author's transl)].

99 non diabetic patients whose ocular examination showed characterized retinal arteriolosclerosis, with or without arterial hypertension, or macular alterations (senile degeneration, non aphakic retinal-vitreous interlayer syndrome, colloid degeneration) have been submitted to an cervico-encephalic vascular ultrasonographic Doppler examination. 25 to 56% revealed latent cerebral arteriopathy sometimes with arterial stenoses, peculiarly carotidal. Other 58, apparently healthy and likewise aged, tested in the same way, revealed only 12% notable arteriopathy.

[Transient visual troubles (author's transl)].

39 persons who complained of isolated transient visual troubles have had their encephalic circulation studied by Doppler ultrasonography. In nearly half of cases, that examination has shown vascular alterations, sometimes very important. That type of examination, very easy to do, seems very usful in such discreet visual troubles.

[Encephalic Doppler ultrasonography in everyday ophthalmology].

Encephalic circulation has been studied by Doppler ultrasonography in a number of persons who complained of discreet visual troubles, transient alterations of the uni- or bilateral visual acuity, apparently isolated alterations of the visual fields, or organic or functional alterations of the retina. In a significant number of cases, the examination has shown cerebral vascular alterations--sometimes very severe--which warrant very careful medical supervision and the institution of a sustained vascular treatment.
