Psychophysiological analysis of mental load during driving on rural roads--a quasi-experimental field study.

The objective of this study was the development and validation of an integrated measure-assessment approach (driving performance and psychophysiological indicators) for the assessment of driving demands of rural road segments as a starting point for design. With 31 student test drivers and a selection of six study roads, the reactivity of psychophysiological parameters was evaluated based on a general model of cognitive-energetic effort regulation according to Hockey (1993). The road curvature change rate was introduced as the independent variable, which served as a criterion of objective road difficulty. Based on a reliability analysis, the longitudinal and cross-sectional stability, especially for heart rate (HR) and blink rate (BR) measures, is sufficiently high. Both these psychophysiological variables and speed vary as a function of the curvature change rate of the rural road segments. The speed parameter differentiates very strongly the different curvature change rates. Among the psychophysiological indicators, changes in the blink rate almost exactly mirror the level of the curvature change rate owing to the fact that the BR decreases almost steadily with increasing curvature change rate. Cardiovascular parameters, such as heart rate (HR) and heart rate variability (HRV), and skin conductance response (SCR) also vary in relation to driving difficulty of road segments, but at levels of intermediate curvature other additional road characteristics may also influence these measures.

[The occurrence of Fusarium strains and their mycotoxins in corn silage. 4. The occurrence of zearalenone in the first cut zone of horizontal silos].

Studies of the occurrence of zearalenone in the cutting surface of a horizontal silo were carried out over 12 days. On all sampling days the silage contained less than 0.1 mg/kg zearalenone (detection limit of the thin-layer chromatographic procedure). Zearalenone could not be detected in silage put into interim store over a period of 17 days either. The results document that zearalenone-producing Fusarium species have no considerable share in the decay of maize silage.

[Possibilities for purification of refuse seepage water by sand containing humic substances].

Sands containing humic substances are proposed for protection of ground water from refuse tip seepage waters which containing heavy metals and organic polluting agents. Such sands are produced and spoiled southern of Leipzig during uncovering of brown coal. Humic acids have qualities such as ion-exchange materials, form hydrogen bondes and are able to form salts and complexes. Besides they can adsorb and include other substances. This properties qualify the humic acids in contact with the grained structure of the sand to interactions with heavy metal ions and organic pollution agents in water such as oils, phenols, surface-active agents and organic phosphorus compounds. The installation of sands containing humic substances on the base of the refuse tip gives chances to prevent the migration of heavy metal ions and organic pollution agents in seepage waters on principle. On the other hand it is possible to use sands containing humic substances for cleaning of seepage waters and recovering of anorganic and organic useful materials. First practical tests with an refuse tip seepage water from the district Erfurt confirm the cleaning effect and the recovering of heavy metals.

[Fetography and amniography in prenatal diagnosis of genetic disorders].

68 patients were transfered to the prenatal diagnosis. Both the alpa-fetorotein-estimation and the fetography or amniography were performed in 13 patients. The indication for fetography is the exclusion of neural tube defects and other serious visible defects. The amniography can especially carried out in the prenatal diagnosis of defects of intestinal tract. A program is proposed to the prenatal detection of neural tube defects: 1. Examination of all of the pregnacies with ultra sonic B scan. 2. At suspicions ultra sonic B scan and after birth of a child with neural tube defect alpha-fetoproteinestimation at the 16th week of pregnancy and fetography at the 24th week of pregnancy.

[Intrauterine gas gangrene in the 37th week of pregnancy].

A report is given on an infection of intrauterine gas gangrene of stage 2 according to Dieminger (Tumpania uteri) in the 37th week of pregnancy which turned out well. The clinical progress of gas gangrene is discussed. The abstention from a caesarian section by reason of indication of the child with suspicion of a severe intrauterine infection, the vaginal delivery which was forced subsequently, the prevailingly prophylactic administration of antibiotics, and the largely initiated infusion and transfusion therapy have in a high degree determined the positive end of the disease. The intensive observation of the woman in labor, who at first had only been clinically conspicuous, led to an early recognition of toxic symptoms, so that an aimed intensive therapy could be carried out.

[Studies on the quantification of air in the process of silage making].

On the basis of model concepts on physical gas exchange a technique was developed for studying the complex interrelationships existing between the characteristics indicating the suitability of a particular material for ensilage and the specific local conditions for silage making at the farm and in a silo. (degree of anaerobic conditions). Conclusions were drawn as to quantitative relations existing between the thickness of the marginal layers of a silage stack that are subject to losses and the compaction of the silage material and the sealing of the silage top during the periods of filling and storage. On the basis of these considerations limits are given for minimum filling of a silo per day of ensilage as depending on the compactness of the consolidated fresh or wilted silage material. Data are given for silage losses at the edged of the silage stack.
