Socio-economic differences in mortality. A life course approach.

"Differential mortality in Norway has been studied on the basis of a sample of data derived from the linkage of the 1960, 1970, and 1980 censuses to vital registration records. Based on the hypothesis that the determinants of survival act in interaction, two models are proposed. The first is based on states defined at each observation period by the conjunction of attributes characterizing each individual. The second model considers the chronological order of the states. Logistic regression applied to the latter shows that the most favourable male and female life trajectories are those for married people belonging to rather privileged categories. There are however some differences by sex, as favourable trajectories concern both economically inactive females and employees." (SUMMARY IN FRE)

[The health care system and regional mortality: a causal analysis].

"We examine the impact of the health care system on regional adult mortality differences in Spain, distinguishing between the demand and supply of health care. We have used a covariance analysis model, fitted to the data using LISREL 7. The distinction made between supply and demand of medical care leads to a significant spatial impact of the use of the health care system on adult mortality." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[Testing of drug release from film pellets with special consideration of the thickness of the polymer coating].

The influence of the thickness of polymer films on drug release was studied by means of an apparatus, developed especially for the examination of film-coated pellets. To show the direct dependence of the thickness of the polymer layer on the process of liberation a sequence of ten coating steps was chosen. On the contrary the release of active ingredients of varying dissolution behaviour was synchronous and didn't depend on the pH-value of the medium. The results show, that by using the proper coating material the thickness of the layer can be used to control the drug liberation process. The comparison of the release from different coating steps in the apparatus described makes it possible to produce mixtures of pellets with both a quick onset and a long duration of action by using only one type of coating material.

[Spray film coating of spherical microgranules with non-aqueous varnish film-formers].

To coat crystals and spherical microgranules with polymer films, the influence of different components of the spray on the release behaviour of the coating product has been tested by means of a spray coating process. The examinations which had been based on cellulose acetatephthalate and various polyacrylate types, were aimed at technological lab parameters of the process as well as at the choice of the solvents, the polymer type and the plasticiser admixture. The liberation test has been made in artificial digestives. The results show that the knowledge of the effects of varied dispensing components will enable as well an optimization of the technological process as a purposeful control of the required retarded effects of the final product.

[A method for testing the resistance of film-forming polymers against gastric juices (author's transl)].

The authors describe a simple method for preparing and testing isolated polymer-based films, and demonstrate their use by the example of selected polymethacrylate films, mainly containing different concentrations of various plastizisers. The results obtained show that the characterization of film properties by this method may be used for the comparison of filmogenic formulae in the forefield of coating and for prognosticating the film quality to be expected.

Life-styles and death-styles: differentials and consequences of mortality trends.

Differentials in mortality in developed countries are examined according to region, sex, age, cause of death, and social class. "Various simulations [using the Odyssey model developed at the Catholic University of Louvain] are presented in order to study the impact of decreasing mortality and mortality differentials on the structure of deaths by cause, and on various economic variables.... The consequences [for] the social security system, among others, are stressed." (summary in FRE, ITA)

[Causality, systems, and dynamic models. Three approaches of the explanation in demography].

The authors compare three methods of demographic analysis: "causal analysis, the transition models and the dynamic models. The purpose of these three approaches is not the same: transition models examine the transformation of a system during a given period; the dynamic model outlines the evolution of a social process through time; the causal analysis describes the mechanism through which the causes produce its effects. The three approaches differ also in the way they take time into account...[In particular,] causal static models are not pertinent in demographic research." (SUMMARY IN ENG)
