Potassium-Dependent Increase in RNA and Protein Synthesis in the Early Phase of Incubation of the Thermodormant Phacelia tanacetifolia Seeds.

The seeds of Phacelia tanacetifolia Benth. cv Bleu Clair incubated at 30 degrees C in the dark did not germinate and did not activate K(+) uptake capacity. The administration of 1 millimolar K(+) in the early phase of incubation stimulated RNA and protein synthesis. The possible role of K(+) in promoting the marcromolecular syntheses during the early phase of germination is discussed.

Changes in form of elongation factor 1 during germination of wheat seeds.

Two forms of EF-1 are present in the high-speed supernatant fraction from wheat embryo homogenate. In embryos from dry seeds EF-1H is 55% of the total amount of EF-1, while after 40 h of germination this form completely disappears. When germination and protein synthesis are accelerated by means of 6-benzyladenine, the rate of conversion of EF-1H is increased. On the other hand, the block of germination and of the evolution of protein synthesis by abscisic acid, block this conversion; the block of water uptake, that stops germination and causes a decrease in protein synthesis, reverses the conversion of EF-1H to EF-1L, increasing EF-1H from 15% to 40% of the total.

A poly(U)-binding factor stimulating EF-1 activity in the wheat-germ soluble fraction.

A poly(U)-binding activity is present in the high-speed supernatant fraction of embryo homogenates from wheat seeds. The factor responsible for such activity was found to have a stimulatory effect on the elongation factor 1 (EF-1). It copurifies with EF-1L, the lighter form of EF-1, through Sephadex G-200, DEAE-cellulose, hydroxyapatite and poly(U)-Sepharose 4B column chromatography. The two factors could be separated only through a heating step which destroyed EF-1 activity whilst leaving most of the poly(U)-binding activity unaltered.

Calcium influx into corn roots as a result of cold shock.

Corn roots or washed corn root tissue exposed to cold shock absorb 20 to 24% more (45)Ca(2+) into a nonexchangeable phase than control roots. Addition to fusicoccin largely prevents this additional calcium influx. The results are discussed in relation to injury-induced changes in membrane permeability of root cell membranes.

Localization of the phosphoester bond hydrolyzed by the major apurinic/apyrmidinic endodeoxyribonuclease from rat-liver chromatin.

The major apurinic/apyrimidinic (AP) endodeoxyribonuclease from rat liver chromatin, an enzyme specific for AP sites in DNA, cleaves the phosphodiester bridge which is the immediate neighbour of the AP site on its 5' side leaving 3'-hydroxyl and 5'-phosphate ends. In contrast with Escherichia coli endonuclease VI, this chromatin enzyme is inactive on reduced AP sites.

[Radiotherapy of tumors of the bladder and urethra].

With regard to vesica tumors, a remarkable difficulty for the interpretation of statistical data is often given by the different classifications that the different authors use. Therefore we have reported a comparative table always for being faithful to what we wished at the beginning of this work that has be useful to the doctor above all by a clinical point of view. In synthesis all the Authors think that radiotherapy is not the elective treatment for tumors in O or A stage, while it can be efficient in the therapy of vesica neoplasies in B1, B2 and C stages. The most Authors seem less favourable to preoperating irradiation of tumor above all for the unexact intraoperating valuation of "staging" that is inevitable after this treatment. Postoperating radiotherapy (5000-6000 R in 20-30 days) can be more useful in the cases of incomplete surgical exeresis although there is the problem of possible radiolesions of eventual uretero-intestinal anastomosis let alone of intestine. In the end urethra tumors are sensitive to radiotherapy for their superficiality and excellent tolerance of membrum to radiations that permits also the giving of 6000-7000 R in 4-6 days.

[Colonic mucins in idiopathic proctocolitis and Crohn's disease].

The AA. examine 75 cases of Crohn disease for studying the secretion of mucina in the different stages of disease. The result is that the acute stage is marked by a strong depletion of mucina; the interesting part of this work is that the study of sulpherized acid mucinae is an excellent standard of diagnosis in regard to the benign evolution of this disease.

Subcellular distribution and functional properties of different forms of elongation fractor EF1 from wheat embryos.

Elongation factor EF1 was found in a low salt homogenate of wheat embryos, either in the 100 000 X g supernatant or in the ribosome pellet. The ribosome-linked EF1 (EF1R), deteched by high salt washing, was purified to electrophoretical homogenetiy and its molecular and functional properties compared to those of a purified high molecular weight species of EF1 obtained from cytoplasm (EF1H). The two forms are associations of different polypeptides having in common only the polypeptide which can form the ternary complex with aminoacyl-tRNA and GTP. Whereas EF1R is able to fulfill all the EF1 functions, EF1H, incubated with ribosomes completely deprived of elongation factors, can catalyze the aminoacyl-tRNA binding to ribosomes, but, in the presence of EF2, forms only a very small amount of poly(Phe).
