[Hemodynamic and clinical studies with Bonnecor--a new anti-arrhythmia drug].

It is reported on clinical and haemodynamic results with Bonnecor, a new antiarrhythmic drug with class I and IV properties, on 68 test persons in parenteral and oral administration. The haemodynamic acute investigations (dosage 2 x 0.1 to 1 x 0.3 mg/kg body weight) which were performed on 10 test persons with compensated heart diseases did not show any negative haemodynamic effects of Bonnecor at rest and on exercition. The chronic effect on ventricular extrasystoles of the degrees of severity mostly II-IV were investigated in the open experiment on 17 patients as well as on 3 patients with supraventricular dysrhythmias and on 30 patients with ventricular extrasystoles Lown III-IV in the single blind cross-over experiments to verapamil retard. A clinically relevant result with regard to the reduction of the ventricular extrasystole about 75% was found in 23% of the patients (open study) and 33.3% of the patients (cross-over), respectively. The reduction of the ventricular extrasystole was significant compared with the empty value. Under the influence of verapamil a significant reduction of the ventricular extrasystole could not be verified, the differences between Verapamil and Bonnecor were, however, not to be ascertained statistically. The effect of Bonnecor on couplets and volleys was clinically relevant in 52 and 46%, respectively, of the patients (reduction greater than or equal to 93%) and approximately corresponds to the results with other antiarrhythmic drugs. The tolerability is to be estimated as relatively good.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Plague in Central Germany in the 17th century].

It is reported on the experiences from several events of epidemic plague in the 17th century, above all in Middle Germany. Documentary material and the historic literature belonging to this served as basis. The mortality rates of plague are discussed, which proved as relatively different. The seasonal courses of the individual epidemics are discussed, which took place above all in the months July, August and September and finished in winter, what is connected with the biology of the flea. It is emphasized that the mortality of children is particularly in the plague, whereas the women and above all the men somewhat less frequently die of the epidemic, unless statistically significant differences are the result in these cases. The inter-familiar infection chains proved as relatively long so that in these cases multiple infections and secondary diseases are supposed to be the cause. It seems to be very likely that for the events of plague in Europe not the infection formula rat - plague-flea - man is valid, but the infection took place interhumanly according to the formula man - Pulex irritans - man.

[Obesity and diabetes-morbidity--a prospective 5-year study].

In a prospective 5-year-study the development of adiposity was tested in a population group consisting of about 30,000 persons. It was shown that during the time of investigation the population decreased in its total number, the consumption of easily digestible carbohydrates and meat, however, increased. As it was established in 1968, the proportion of the adipose persons (more than 20% of the Broca-weight) and the percental average deviation from the Broca-weight (calculated in decennium classes) was more than in the comparable population groups in the GDR. Contrary to expectation the examination further showed that on an average men exhibited a trend to the increase in weight, but on the average women decreased in weight. In all age groups (with the exception of the 60- to 69-year-old persons) the proportion of obese persons was significantly lower in 1973 than in 1968. Unchangedly adipose are the diabetics who also have a by far higher average weight than the healthy population and who up to now do not reveal an inclination to the decrease in weight. With 2.9% the average frequency of diabetes is also adequately high.

[Late fate of patients with pernicious anemia].

In a retrospective study is reported on 271 cases of pernicious anaemia which were observed for 30 years. 2 groups of patients could be significantly differed. In the first group the disease appears familiarly and/or is combined with a diabetes mellitus or a disease of the thyroid gland. Its manifestation is 7 years earlier than in the 2nd group, in individual cases without genetic relation. In this a heterologous etiology of the pernicious anaemia is to be seen. On principle in therapy was treated only parenterally and relatively small quantities of vitamin B12 were given. In these cases the results were good. Recidivations appeared only quite infrequently. The life expectancy obtained is altogether high, but it is, however, somewhat under the average of a healthy population of the same age. Despite careful control and early operation the gastric carcinoma more frequently appeared as cause of death than in the average population of the same age, whereas all other tumours were more rarely found.
