Single-molecule electrical studies on a 7 nm long molecular wire.

A self-assembled arylene-ethynylene molecular wire with a rigid 7 nm long backbone exhibits symmetrical current-voltage (I-V) characteristics and a single-molecule current of 0.35 +/- 0.05 nA at 0.3 V; these data are supported by theoretical calculations.

Molecules that mimic Schottky diodes.

Self-assembled monolayers of cationic donor-(pi-bridge)-acceptor dyes coupled with anionic donors exhibit asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics when contacted by Au or PtIr probes. Rectification ratios of 3000 at +/- 1 V are obtained from Au-S-C10H20-A+-pi-D|D-|Au structures in which the cationic moiety is 5-(4-dimethylaminobenzylidene)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydro-isoquinolinium and the counterion is copper phthalocyanine-3,4',4'',4'''-tetrasulfonate (SAM ). Similar behaviour, with a high rectification ratio of 700-900 at +/- 1 V, is also obtained for the CuPc(SO3-)4 salt of 4-[2-(4-dimethylaminonaphthalen-1-yl)-vinyl]-quinolinium (SAM ). The properties are dependent upon the D-pi-A+ moieties which, for these highly rectifying salts, have sterically locked non-planar structures causing the conjugation to be effectively broken. Its effect on the electrical asymmetry is less spectacular when the cationic species is sterically unhindered: the rectification ratio decreases to 15-70 at +/- 1 V for films of the 4-[2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)-vinyl]-pyridinium salt (SAM ), which has single-ring substituents on opposite sides of the -CH=CH- bridge and an almost planar D-pi-A+ structure. Rectification ratios from the sterically hindered structures are on a par with electrical asymmetries from metal-insulator-metal (MIM) devices where oxide-induced Schottky barriers dominate the behaviour.

Organic rectifying junctions from an electron-accepting molecular wire and an electron-donating phthalocyanine.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of arylene-ethynylene oligomers that incorporate electron-accepting 9-fluorenone and 9-[(4-pyridyl)methylene]fluorene units in the backbone exhibit symmetrical current-voltage (I-V) characteristics, but rectifying junctions with current ratios of 20-80 at +/-1 V have been obtained by protonating these wire-like molecules and ionically coupling with anionic donors.

Controlled alignment of molecular diodes via ionic assembly of cationic donor-(pi-bridge)-acceptor molecules on anionic surfaces.

Alignment of cationic donor-(pi-bridge)-acceptor molecules via metathesis with a self-assembled monolayer formed from sodium 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate results in ultra-thin rectifying Au-S-(CH2)3SO3-/A+-pi-D structures which exhibit optimum current ratios of 450 at +/-1 V for N-methyl-5-(4-dibutylaminobenzylidene)-5,6,7,8-tetrahydroisoquinolinium.

Molecular rectification: stabilised alignment of chevron-shaped dyes in hybrid SAM/LB structures in which the self-assembled monolayer is anionic and the Langmuir-Blodgett layer is cationic.

The chevron-shaped dye, N-butyl-2,6-bis-[2-{4-(2-(4-dibutylaminophenyl)-vinyl)-phenyl}-vinyl]-pyridinium iodide, has a hydrophilic apex that is electron-accepting and hydrophobic it-bridged limbs that are electron-donating. It forms non-centrosymmetric monolayers at the air-water interface and when deposited, its LB films exhibit second-harmonic generation and asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. However, the behaviour is short lived: molecular reorganisation causes the absorption maximum to shift from ca. 400 to 700 nm with suppression of the SHG and rectification. Long-term stability results when the cationic dye is LB deposited on an anionic surface, for example, a SAM formed via chemisorption of sodium 3-mercapto-1-propanesulfonate on a gold-coated substrate. The hybrid Au/SAM/LB device exhibits asymmetric I-V curves with rectification ratios of ca. 25 at +/- 1 V when investigated by scanning tunnelling spectroscopy and contacted by PtIr probes.

Organic rectifying junctions fabricated by ionic coupling.

Ionically-assembled structures that comprise discrete layers of cationic acceptors (4,4'-bipyridinium) and anionic donors (copper phthalocyanine-3,4',4'',4'''-tetrasulfonate) exhibit asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics with high rectification ratios of 60-100 at +/-1 V.

Improved molecular rectification from self-assembled monolayers of a sterically hindered dye.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) formed from the reaction of 1-(10-acetylsulfanyldecyl)-4-[2-(4-dimethylaminonaphthalen-1-yl)-vinyl]-quinolinium iodide (1a) and gold-coated substrates exhibit asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics with a rectification ratio of 50-150 at +/-1 V. It is the highest to date for a molecular diode, and the improved behavior may be assigned in part to the controlled alignment of the donor-(pi-bridge)-acceptor moieties and in part to steric hindrance, which imposes a nonplanar structure and effectively isolates the molecular orbitals of the donor and acceptor end groups. The molecular origin of the rectification is verified by its suppression upon exposure to HCl vapor, which protonates the dimethylamino group and inhibits the electron-donating properties, with restoration upon exposure to NH3. It is also established by a reduced rectification ratio of ca. 2 at +/-1 V when the cationic D-pi-A+ moieties adopt an antiparallel arrangement in self-assembled films of the derivative, bis-[1-(10-decyl)-4-[2-(4-dimethylaminonaphthalen-1-yl)-vinyl]-quinolinium]-disulfide diiodide (1b), which adsorbs via one of its terminal donors without rupture of the sulfur-sulfur bond: Au/D-pi-A+-C10H20-S-S-C10H20-+A-pi-D (I-)2.

Cascaded long-period gratings with nanostructured coatings.

The response of the transmission spectrum of cascaded long period gratings (LPGs) to the deposition of nanostructured coatings by use of the Langmuir-Blodgett technique is investigated. The phase of the interference fringes within the LPGs' attenuation bands is shown to be highly sensitive to the optical thickness of the coating, for thicknesses of the order of 100 nm.

Molecular rectification: self-assembled monolayers in which donor-(pi-bridge)-acceptor moieties are centrally located and symmetrically coupled to both gold electrodes.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) obtained from 1-(10-acetylsulfanyldecyl)-4-[2-(4-dimethylaminophenyl)vinyl]quinolinium iodide exhibit asymmetric current-voltage (I-V) characteristics. The rectification may be reversibly switched: it is suppressed when the film is exposed to HCl vapor, the intramolecular charge-transfer axis being inhibited by protonation, but restored when exposed to NH(3). The behavior is intrinsic to the donor-(pi-bridge)-acceptor moiety, and ambiguity in the assignment has been excluded by matching the alkyl tails on the substrate and contacting STM tip to locate the chromophore midway between the electrodes: Au-S-C(10)H(21)//D-pi-A-C(10)H(20)-S-Au. Films contacted by gold tips exhibit rectification ratios of ca. 18 at +/-1 V, whereas those contacted by pentanethiolate (Au-S-C(5)H(11))- and decanethiolate (Au-S-C(10)H(21))-coated tips have corresponding ratios of ca. 11 and 5, respectively. The I-V curves are different, but when adjusted for thickness the current versus electric field dependence is indistinguishable. Seven dyes are reported: SAMs with sterically hindered D-pi-A moieties, in which the donor and acceptor are twisted out of plane, exhibit rectification, whereas those that are planar or have a weak donor-acceptor combination do not.
