Elucidation of the redox behavior of 2,5-dimercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole (DMcT) at poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT)-modified electrodes and application of the DMcT-PEDOT composite cathodes to lithium/lithium ion batteries.

The redox reactions of DMcT at PEDOT-modified glassy carbon electrodes (GCEs) in acetonitrile (AN) have been investigated via cyclic voltammetry (CV) and the electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) in order to elucidate the redox reaction mechanism. A redox couple at -0.29 V versus Ag/Ag+ was assigned to the dimerization process of singly protonated DMcT (DMcT-1H), and a second couple observed at +0.42 V was assigned to the polymerization process of the protonated DMcT dimer. Our investigations revealed further that the anodic current response at +0.55 V (polymerization process) has a shoulder at +0.38 V ascribed to the dimerization process of doubly protonated DMcT (DMcT-2H), indicating that the redox couple at +0.42 V is the overlapping response of the polymerization of the protonated DMcT dimer and the dimerization of the DMcT-2H monomer. It was also confirmed that the dimerization process of DMcT-1H at -0.29 V proceeded not only at the surface of a PEDOT film but also inside the film as previously suggested. Moreover, the thermodynamics of these redox reactions at PEDOT-modified GCEs are dependent on the basicity (or acidity) of the solution, as anticipated and previously shown at unmodified GCEs. The oxidation of DMcT occurs at less positive potentials and the reduction occurs at more negative potentials in the presence of base. On the basis of the results obtained, the full redox reaction scheme for DMcT at a PEDOT-modified GCE is proposed.

Ruthenium molecular wires with conjugated bridging ligands: onset of band formation in linear inorganic conjugated oligomers.

We have prepared and characterized a series of multimetallic oligomers of Ru using the pi-conjugated bridging ligand tetra-2-pyridyl-1,4-pyrazine (tppz), as well as mixed-ligand complexes with terpyridine end caps, and analyzed their electrochemical and spectroscopic properties, comparing them with modern computational electronic structure methods. The results suggest that the high degree of metal-metal interunit communication in these linear oligomers yields low HOMO-LUMO gaps, high delocalization, and the onset of "quasi-band" features, all indicative that these compounds should be excellent molecular wire materials. Recent spectroscopic and excited-state analyses of these and related compounds focus on optically accessible states, which ignore optically silent frontier electronic states more relevant to nanoelectronic applications.

Intermolecular charge transfer between heterocyclic oligomers. Effects of heteroatom and molecular packing on hopping transport in organic semiconductors.

For electron or hole transfer between neighboring conducting polymer strands or oligomers, the intrinsic charge-transfer rate is dictated by the charge-resonance integral and by the reorganization energy due to geometric relaxation. To explain conduction anisotropy and other solid-state effects, a multivariate, systematic analysis of bandwidth as a function of intermolecular orientations is undertaken for a series of oligoheterocycles, using first-principles methods. While cofacial oligomers show the greatest bandwidths at a given intermolecular C-C contact distance, for a fixed center-to-center intermolecular distance, tilted pi-stacking increases pi-overlap (particularly for LUMO orbitals) and decreases electrostatic repulsion, yielding optimum tilt angles for packing of approximately 40-60 degrees at small intermolecular separations. The calculations also reveal that bandwidths and intrinsic mobilities of holes and electrons in conjugated oligoheterocycles can be quite comparable.

Electronic structure and band gaps in cationic heterocyclic oligomers. Multidimensional analysis of the interplay of heteroatoms, substituents, molecular length, and charge on redox and transparency characteristics.

Oxidative doping of extended pi-conjugated polymers and oligomers produces dramatic changes in optical and electrical properties, arising from polaron and soliton-derived midgap states. Despite the great importance of such changes for materials properties, far less is known about the cationic polaron states than about the neutral, semiconducting or insulating, undoped materials. The systematic, multifactor computational analysis of oligoheterocycles such as oligothiophenes, oligofurans, and oligopyrroles presented here affords qualitative and quantitative understanding of the interplay among skeletal substitution pattern, electronic structure, and the effective band gap reduction on p-doping. A simple linear relation is derived for predicting p-doped oligomer and polymer effective band gaps based on those of the neutral oligomers; this relationship confirms the effectiveness of a "fixed band" approximation and explains the counterintuitive increase of the effective band gap on p-doping of many small band gap oligomers. The present analysis also suggests new candidates for transparent conductive polymers and predicts limiting behavior of ionization potential, electron affinity, and other properties for various polyheterocyclic systems. The results yield insight into materials constraints in electrochromic polymers as well as on p- and n-type conductors and semiconductors.

Hopping transport in conductive heterocyclic oligomers: reorganization energies and substituent effects.

Molecular scale charge motion in disordered organic materials at ambient temperature occurs via a hopping-type mechanism with rates dictated both by the charge transfer integral and by the reorganization energy due to geometric relaxation. This contribution presents a systematic theoretical analysis of cation internal reorganization energies for a broad family of organic oligoheterocycles-variation of reorganization energy with oligomer chain length, heteroatom identity, and a range of heterocycle substituents provides key information on important structural properties governing internal reorganization energies. At room temperature, the range in reorganization energies induced by substituent variations corresponds to a >10(2)-fold variation in intrinsic hole transfer rate, suggesting that changes in reorganization energy dominate variations in charge-transfer rates for many semiconducting/conducting oligomers.

Building blocks for n-type molecular and polymeric electronics. Perfluoroalkyl- versus alkyl-functionalized oligothiophenes (nT; n = 2-6). Systematics of thin film microstructure, semiconductor performance, and modeling of majority charge injection in field-effect transistors.

The solid-state properties and FET electrical behavior of several series of alpha,omega- and beta,beta'-fluorocarbon- and alkyl-substituted and unsubstituted oligothiophenes nTs (n = 2-6) are compared and contrasted. The thin films were grown by slow vacuum deposition over a range of substrate temperatures and/or by casting from solution and were investigated by X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy. Our results indicate that vacuum deposition at 60-80 degrees C affords films with remarkably similar microstructures despite the extensive H --> F substitution. Trends in observed d spacing versus molecular core extension provide quantitative information on molecular orientation. Field-effect transistor measurements performed for all systems and having the same device structure, components, and fabrication conditions demonstrate that all nTs functionalized with fluorocarbon chains at the thiophene termini are n-type semiconductors, in contrast to the p-type activity of the remaining systems. One of these systems, alpha,omega-diperfluorohexyl-4T, exhibits a mobility of 0.22 cm2/(V s) and an Ion:Ioff ratio of 10(6), one of the highest so far reported for an n-type organic semiconductor. The effect of substitution regiochemistry on FET majority charge carrier was additionally studied, in the case of a 6T core, by shifting the fluorocarbon substituents from the terminal to the central thiophene units. Finally, we propose a simple theoretical model for electrode/organic interfacial carrier injection. The results suggest why modest substituent-induced changes in the injection barrier can produce working n-type materials.

Building blocks for N-type molecular and polymeric electronics. Perfluoroalkyl- versus alkyl-functionalized oligothiophenes (nTs; n = 2-6). Systematic synthesis, spectroscopy, electrochemistry, and solid-state organization.

The synthesis, comparative physicochemical properties, and solid-state structures of five oligothiophene (nT) series differing in substituent nature and attachment, regiochemistry, and oligothiophene core length (n) are described. These five series include the following 25 compounds: (i) alpha,omega-diperfluorohexyl-nTs 1 (DFH-nTs, n = 2-6), (ii) beta,beta'-diperfluorohexyl-nTs 2 (isoDFH-nTs, n = 2-6), (iii) alpha,omega-dihexyl-nTs 3 (DH-nTs, n = 2-6), (iv) beta,beta'-dihexyl-nTs 4 (isoDH-nTs, n = 2-6), and (v) unsubstituted oligothiophenes 5 (alphanTs, n = 2-6). All new compounds were characterized by elemental analysis, mass spectrometry, and multinuclear NMR spectroscopy. To probe and address quantitatively how the chemistry and regiochemistry of conjugated core substitution affects molecular and solid-state properties, the entire 1-5 series was investigated by differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and optical absorption and emission spectroscopies. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction data for several fluorocarbon-substituted oligomers are also presented and compared. The combined analysis of these data indicates that fluorocarbon-substituted nT molecules strongly interact in the condensed state, with unit cell level phase separation between the aromatic core and fluorocarbon chains. Surprisingly, despite these strong intermolecular interactions, high solid-state fluorescence efficiencies are exhibited by the fluorinated derivatives. Insight into the solution molecular geometries and conformational behavior are obtained from analysis of optical and variable-temperature NMR spectra. Finally, cyclic voltammetry data offer a reliable picture of frontier MO energies, which, in combination with DFT computations, provide key information on relationships between oligothiophene substituent effects and electronic response properties.
