Rhodium hydride formation in the presence of a bulky monophosphite ligand: a spectroscopic and solid-state investigation.

A study has been carried out on rhodium catalyst preforming when modified with the bulky tris(2,4-di-tert-butylphenyl) phosphite, P(Obtbp)(3). X-Ray crystal structure determinations of a tropolone-type precursor complex [Rh(TropBr(3))(CO){P(Obtbp)(3)}].P(Obtbp)(3).CH(3)COCH(3)(TropBr(3)= 3,5,7-tribromotropolonate) and the free P(Obtbp)(3) ligand are reported. Systematic in situ IR and NMR studies of the particular rhodium phosphite modified catalyst and its precursors have led to the identification of two distinct rhodium hydride species. A {(1)H,(31)P} HMBC NMR experiment afforded clarity on the (31)P NMR spectra observed under hydroformylation conditions. The species were identified as [HRh(CO)(3){P(Obtbp)(3)}] and [HRh(CO)(2){P(Obtbp)(3)}(2)]. Attention was also given to the rate of catalyst formation when starting from different rhodium precursors.

Carbonyl(5-nitrotropolonato-kappa2O1,O2)(triphenylphosphine-kappaP)rhodium(I).

The molecule of the title complex, [Rh(5-NO2trop)(C18H15P)(CO)] (5-NO2trop is 2-hydroxy-5-nitrocyclohepta-2,4,6-trienone, C7H4NO4), has a distorted square-planar geometry. Strong intramolecular and weak intermolecular hydrogen bonding is observed, with H...O distances of the order of 2.25 and 2.55 A, respectively. The Rh-CO, Rh-O (trans to CO), Rh-O (trans to P) and Rh-P bond distances are 1.775 (7), 2.072 (4), 2.068 (4) and 2.2397 (17) A, respectively, the O-Rh-O angle is 77.09 (16) degrees and the bidentate O-C-C-O torsion angle is 1.5 (7) degrees.

3,7-dibromohinokitiol: a redetermination.

The structure of the title compound (systematic name: 3,7-dibromo-2-hydroxy-6-isopropylcyclohepta-2,4,6-trien-1-one), C(10)H(10)Br(2)O(2), previously described by Ito, Fukazawa & Iitaka [Tetrahedron Lett. (1972), 13, 745-749], has been redetermined. Strong inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds, with H.O distances of 2.17 (9) and 2.06 (6) A, respectively, are observed. There are also two short Br...Br and two short Br.(ring centroid) interactions. Important dimensions include C--O(carbonyl) = 1.252 (5) A, C--O(hydroxyl) = 1.355 (5) A, C-Br(3-position) = 1.904 (4) A and C--Br(7-position) = 1.905 (4) A, and an O--C--C--O ring torsion angle of -6.7 (6) degrees.
