10 Gbit/s all-optical non-return to zero-return-to-zero data format conversion based on a backward dark-optical-comb injected semiconductor optical amplifier.

By using a semiconductor optical amplifier backward injected by a dark-optical-comb pulse train at 10 GHz, we demonstrate a 10 Gbit/s all-optical nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ) to return-to-zero (RZ) format conversion of an incoming optical pseudorandom binary sequence (PRBS) data stream. Both the polarity and the wavelength of data are conserved during format conversion. Without any pre-amplification, the extinction ratio of degraded optical NRZ PRBS data is greatly improved from 7.13 to 13.6 dB after NRZ-to-RZ conversion. An ultralow bit-error rate of 10(-12) at a data rate as high as 10 Gbits/s is obtained with a received optical power of -18.3 dBm. The converted RZ PRBS data exhibit a negative power penalty of >3.7 dB compared with the NRZ PRBS data at a bit-error rate of 10(-12).

Dual-stage soliton compression of a self-started additive pulse mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser for 48 fs pulse generation.

A dual-stage single-mode fiber (SMF) and large-effective-area fiber (LEAF) link for generating 48 fs pedestal-free pulses from a 40 MHz self-started additive pulse mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (APM-EDFL) with output peak power and pulse energy of 16 kW and 500 pJ, respectively, is demonstrated. With the SMF+LEAF link, a maximum pulse-width compression ratio of 7 and an optimized pulse-energy confining ratio of up to 85% can be achieved, and the soliton self-frequency shift effect of the APM-EDFL pulse can be greatly suppressed.

Supermode-noise-free eighth-order femtosecond soliton from a backward dark-optical-comb-injection mode-locked semiconductor optical amplifier fiber laser.

A backward dark-optical-comb-injection mode-locked semiconductor optical amplifier fiber laser (SOAFL) with a femtosecond pulse width and an ultrahigh supermode-noise suppressing ratio (SMSR) is primarily demonstrated. The mode-locked SOAFL pulse with a spectral linewidth of 0.45 nm is shortened from 15 to 8.6 ps under chirp compensation in a 420 m long dispersion-compensated fiber, corresponding to a time-bandwidth product of 0.48. The eighth-order soliton is obtained by the nonlinearly soliton's compression of the chirp-compensated SOAFL pulse in a 112 m long single-mode fiber at an input peak power of 51 W, providing the pulse width, the linewidth, and the nearly transform-limited time-bandwidth product are <200 fs, 13.8 nm, and 0.34, respectively. The phase noise and integrated timing jitter at an offset frequency below 1 MHz are -105 dBc/Hz and 0.8 ps, respectively. An ultrahigh pulse-compression ratio of 43 and a SMSR of 87 dB for the eighth-order SOAFL soliton are reported.

Injection-locking laser-diode-based OC-192 optical non-return-to-zero-to-return-to-zero OR logic gate.

An OC-192 optical return-to-zero- (RZ-) formatted OR logic gate is experimentally demonstrated and theoretically interpreted for the first time to our knowledge. It is implemented by using a data format converter based on an optically injection-locked Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) modulated in below-threshold condition. By injecting two non-return-to-zero data streams into the FPLD-based OR gate, a peak-power-equalized RZ-formatted OR logic data stream extinction ratio of >8 dB is obtained from the FPLD with optimized rf-modulating and optical injecting powers of 24.7 and >-4 dBm, respectively. The highest data rate of up to 12.5 Gbits/s with a bit error rate (BER) of 10(-13) at a received optical power of >-16 dBm can be achieved by increasing the dc bias current of the FPLD-based RZ-formatted OR logic gate to 8 mA. The OR-gated RZ data stream exhibits a duty cycle (pulse width) of approximately 27% (27 ps) and a 0.5 dB power penalty at a BER of 10(-9) at a data rate of 9.953 Gbits/s.

Suppression of phase and supermode noise in a harmonic mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser with a semiconductor-optical-amplifier-based high-pass filter.

By operating an intracavity semiconductor-optical-amplifier- (SOA-) based high-pass filter at the nearly transparent current condition, the supermode noise (SMN), the relaxation oscillation, and the single-sideband (SSB) phase noise can be simultaneously suppressed in an actively mode-locked erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). The SOA at the nearly transparent condition enhances the SMN suppression ratio of the EDFL from 32 to 76 dB at the cost of the phase noise degrading from -114 to -104.2 dBc/Hz and broadening the pulse width from 36 to 61 ps. With an optical bandpass filter, the SSB phase noise and the SMN suppression ratio can be further improved to -110 dBc/Hz and 81 dB, respectively. The EDFL pulse can be further shortened to 3.1 ps with a time-bandwidth product of 0.63 after compression.

10 Gbit/s tunable dual-wavelength nonreturn-to-zero-to-return-to-zero data-format transformer based on a non-direct-current-biased fabry-perot laser diode.

We demonstrate the conversion of a nonreturn-to-zero (NRZ)-formatted electrical data stream into a wavelength-tunable return-to-zero (RZ)-formatted optical pulse code by externally seeding a synchronously sinusoidal-modulated Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) with optical pseudorandom binary-sequence data at 10 Gbits/s (Gbps). The FPLD without a dc-biased current was modulated by use of a power-amplified sinusoidal wave signal (approximately 25.6 dBm) as an NRZ-to-RZ data-format transformer, which is regeneratively amplified by a closed-loop erbium-doped fiber amplifier. The gain switching and on-off keying operation of the FPLD is initiated under the seeding of self-feedback and external-injection signals. A maximum wavelength tuning range of 30 nm with a side-mode suppression ratio of greater than 36 dB is obtained. The power penalty of the NRZ-to-RZ data-format conversion at 10 Gbps is 1.5 dB.

Tenth-order rational-harmonic frequency multiplication and detuning of optical pulse injection-locked erbium-doped fiber laser.

The jitter and frequency-detuning dynamics of a 10-GHz rational-harmonic frequency-multiplied pulse train generated from an erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL) is studied. The EDFL is self-feedback seeded and optically injection locked by a gain-switched laser diode (GSLD) with a pulse width and an average power of 17.6 ps and 0.2 mW, respectively, at a repetition frequency of 1 GHz. The repetition frequency of the optical pulse train can be tenth-order multiplied by a slight detuning of the repetition frequency of the GSLD to match the rational-harmonic injection-locked condition of the EDFL. As the repetition frequency is multiplied from 1 to 10 GHz, the peak power, the pulse width, and the frequency-detuning bandwidth of the injection-locked EDFL pulses decrease from 1.2 to 0.3 W, from 40 to 21 ps, and from 40 to 9 kHz, respectively. The timing jitter of the injection-locked EDFL repeated at 1 GHz remains unchanged (< 0.5 ps) within the detuning bandwidth, which inevitably increases to 1.2 ps after tenth-order multiplication.

Spectral characteristics of a regenerative semiconductor optical amplifier mutually injection locked with a Fabry-Perot laser diode.

The anomalous injection locking of a traveling-wave semiconductor optical amplifier (SOA) and a fiber-pigtailed Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) linked with single-mode and improved side-mode suppression ratio output is demonstrated. We achieve this injection locking by driving the FPLD slightly below threshold and by feedback injecting the FPLD with fractional output of a closed-loop SOA. The SOA-FPLD link lases in a single FPLD longitudinal mode with a reduced linewidth of 0.013 nm and a maximum side-mode-suppressing ratio of 39.7 dB. A precise 3-dB linewidth of 45-50 MHz is also observed from the self-homodyne mode-beating spectrum. The optimized feedback-injecting power for the FPLD is approximately 2% of the SOA-FPLD linked output power of >400 microW. The variations in output power and in peak wavelength are not more than 0.54% and 0.06%, respectively. The injection-locked SOA-FPLD link is insensitive to the temperature fluctuation within +/- 0.25 degrees C.

Linewidth reduction and wavelength tuning of an erbium-doped fiber laser by use of a single-mode-selected and side-mode-suppressed Fabry-Perot laser diode.

A single-mode and highly side-mode-suppressed 1.55-microm Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) is achieved by feedback injection with an erbium-doped fiber laser (EDFL). For selection of the strongest longitudinal mode from the gain spectrum of the FPLD for lasing in the EDFL, the FPLD is operated at just below the threshold condition and is feedback injected by 0.02% of the EDFL output power. The lasing mode and center wavelength of the proposed single-mode FPLD source are decided by cross-correlated gain profiles of the EDFL and the FPLD; however, the effect of FPLD injection modes is found to be more pronounced. The optimized lasing linewidth (system limitation) and side-mode suppression ratio of 0.01 nm and > 49 dB are obtained, which are far better than those of a FPLD at free-running condition. The worst linewidths at 3- and 10-dB decay are observed to be at approximately 0.016 and 0.05 nm, respectively. Linear wavelength tuning of as much as 4.5 nm (from 1558.7 to 1563.2 nm) by adjustment of the temperature of the FPLD from 10 degrees C to 40 degrees C at just below threshold is reported. The wavelength-tuning slope is approximately 0.14 nm/degrees C under temperature accuracy of 0.1 degrees C.

Mutual injection locking of an erbium-doped fiber laser and a fiber-pigtailed Fabry-Perot laser diode.

Mutual injection locking of a fiber-pigtailed Fabry-Perot laser diode (FPLD) and a closed-loop erbium-doped fiber-amplifier-based laser (EDFL) system are studied. A single FPLD longitudinal mode can be lasing in the EDFL-FPLD link, with a reduced linewidth of <0.017 nm and an improved sidemode-suppressing ratio of 50 dB. The FPLD's optimized current range is below threshold within 10%, and its required feedback-injecting power is 12.4 microW (corresponding to 0.03% of the EDFL output power). The maximum detuning ranges of the current and temperature of the FPLD that preserve the narrow linewidth and the highest sidemode-suppressing ratio of the EDFL-FPLD link are 2.4 mA and 2.2 degrees C, respectively. The power dissipated by the EDFL-FPLD link is 20% more than that of the free-running EDFL.
