Design of molecular scaffolds based on unusual geometries for magnetic modulation of spin-diverse complexes with selective redox response.

A weakly coupled heterometallic [CuFe] complex has been prepared in which the metal centers are coordinated to a new electroactive ligand. The spin-diverse system delivers distinct ground states upon application of selective redox potentials. Ligand oxidation fosters radical generation, and the initial ground state associated with a weakly coupled [CuFe] core switches to a ground state associated with the [Fe-radical] coupling; the Cu(II) ion remains uncoupled. A third state is obtained upon reduction of the cupric center and in absence of the radical. The possibilities and limitations of these systems are discussed.

Cu2{[18]ane-N6} complexes: structures, magnetism, and phosphate monoester binding.

A novel Cu(II)2 complex of the [18]ane-N6 macrocycle ([18]ane-N6 = 1,4,7,10,13,16-hexaazacyclooctadecane) was prepared from the reaction between [18]ane-N6 and Cu(II) salts such as Cu(NO3)2 and Cu(OAc)2. A structural study of the complex derived from Cu(OAc)2 (1) revealed a Cu(II)2 core encircled by a [18]ane-N6 ligand and two mu-O-OAc ligands. The facile replacement of mu-O-OAc by a phosphate monoester [PO3(OR)2-] yielded a number of bis(phosphate monoester)dicopper complexes with ROPO3(2-) as hydrogen phosphate (HPO4(2-), 3a), phenyl phosphate [PO3(OPh)2-, 3b], glycerol 2-phosphate [PO3(OCH(CH2OH)2)2-, 3c], alpha-d-gluocose phosphate [PO3(C6H11O6)2-, 3d], and dl-alpha-glycerol phosphate [PO3(OCH2CHOHCH2OH)2-, 3e]. Structural studies of compounds 3a-d confirmed both the retention of the Cu2{[18]ane-N6} core and a mu-O-PO3(OR) coordination mode. Displacement of acetate by a phosphate monoester in an aqueous solution was accompanied by a significant change in the visible absorption, which enables the establishment of relative association constants of PO3(OR)2- on the order of 10(4) in the unbuffered solution and 10(3) in the buffered solution (HEPES). Measurement of the magnetic susceptibility of compound 3a over the temperature range of 5-300 K and subsequent modeling revealed a weak antiferromagnetic coupling (J = -1.1 cm(-1)) between two Cu(II) centers.

Chloro and hydroxo forms of a boron(III) subtriazaporphyrin macrocycle.

cis-3,4-Dicyano-3-hexene undergoes cyclotrimerization with BCl3 to form the new subtriazaporphyrin chloro[hexaethylsubtriazaporphyrinato]boron(III). The hydroxo derivative of this macrocycle has also been made, and the X-ray crystal structure of the hydroxy form was determined. Electronic absorption and magnetic circular dichroism spectra of the hydroxo monomer species were interpreted using time-dependent density functional theory calculations.

An S = 2 cyanide-bridged trinuclear Fe(III)2Ni(II) single-molecule magnet.

Treatment of [NEt4][(pzTp)Fe(III)(CN)3] (1) with Ni(II)(OTf)2 (OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) and 1,5,8,12-tetraazadodecane (L) affords {[(pzTp)Fe(III)(CN)3]2[Ni(II)L]} x 1/2MeOH (2), while 2,2'-bipyridine (bipy) affords {[(pzTp)Fe(III)(CN)3]2[Ni(II)(bipy)2]} x 2 H2O (3). Magnetic measurements indicate that 2 and 3 have S = 2 ground states and that 3 exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization above 2 K.

Radical-radical interaction through a saturated link: methylenebis-6-oxoverdazyl.

The diradical methylenebis(1,5-diisopropyl-6-oxoverdazyl) was synthesized by benzoquinone oxidation of the corresponding bis(tetrazane). The diradical crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c with cell parameters a = 21.1411(8) A, b = 12.4781(5) A, c = 8.2457(3) A, beta = 108.638(2) degrees, V = 2061.15 A3, Z = 4. Magnetic measurements indicate the diradical has a singlet ground state and triplet excited state at 150 cm(-1). Interaction between the nonconjugated radical centers is also seen in the UV-vis spectrum as a broad shoulder near 500 nm that is not apparent in the spectrum of the monoradical.

A two-dimensional octacyanomolybdate(V)-based ferrimagnet: {[Mn(II)(DMF)4]3[Mo(V)(CN)8]2}n.

Treatment of [HNBu3]3[Mo(V)(CN)8] with manganese(II) p-toluenesulfonate in N,N'-dimethylformamide (DMF) affords {[Mn(II)(DMF)4]3[Mo(V)(CN)8]2}n (1) as a two-dimensional network. The structure of 1 consists of [cis-Mn(II)(DMF)4(mu-NC)2]2+ and [trans-Mn(II)(DMF)4(mu-NC)2]2+ units that are linked via cyanides to three-connected [Mo(V)(CN)5(mu-CN)3]3- centers in a 4:2:6 ratio, forming 12-membered rings. Magnetic measurements indicate that 1 is a ferrimagnet (TN = 8 K) that exhibits frequency-dependent behavior in chi". Heating of 1 affords an additional magnetic phase (TN = 21 K) that is absent of linkage isomerism.

An S = 6 cyanide-bridged octanuclear FeIII4NiII4 complex that exhibits slow relaxation of the magnetization.

The synthesis and structural and magnetic characterization of an S = 6 cyanide-bridged octanuclear FeIII4NiII4 (1) complex is described. Ac susceptibility and mu-SQUID measurements suggest that fast magnetization relaxation is present in zero-field due to quantum tunneling of the ground spin state (QTM) while application of small magnetic fields induces slow relaxation of the magnetization.

Early metal di- and tricyanometalates: Useful building blocks for constructing magnetic clusters.

Treatment of mer-VCl3(THF)3 with KTp [Tp = hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate], followed by [NEt4]CN in acetonitrile, affords [NEt4][(Tp)V(III)(CN)3].H2O (1.H2O); aerobic oxidation affords [NEt4][(Tp)V(IV)(O)(CN)2] (2). Subsequent treatment of 2 with Mn(II)(OTf)2 (OTf = trifluoromethanesulfonate) and 2,2'-bipyridine affords {[(Tp)V(O)(CN)2]2[Mn(II)(bipy)2]2[OTf]2}.2MeCN (3). Magnetic measurements indicate that 1-3 exhibit S = 1, (1/2), and 4 spin ground states, respectively.

Studies of a dinuclear manganese complex with phenoxo and bis-acetato bridging in the Mn2(II,II) and Mn2(II,III) states: Coordination structural shifts and oxidation state control in bridged dinuclear complexes.

The dinucleating ligand, 2,6-bis{[(2-(2-pyridyl)ethyl)(2-pyridylmethyl)-amino]-methyl}-4-methylphenol) (L1OH) reacts with Mn(ClO4)2.6H2O to form the dinuclear complex [Mn2(II,II)(L1O)(mu-OOCCH3)2]ClO4 (1). The electrolytic oxidation of 1 at 0.7 V (vs Ag/AgCl) produces the mixed valent complex [Mn2(II,III)(L1O)(mu-OOCCH3)2](ClO4)2 (1ox) quantitatively, while electrolysis at 0.20 V converts 1ox back to 1. X-ray crystallographic structures show that both 1 and 1ox are dinuclear complexes in which the two manganese ions are each in distorted octahedral coordination environments bridged by the phenoxo oxygen and two acetate ions. The structural changes that occur upon the oxidation 1 to 1ox suggest an extended pi-bonding system involving the phenoxo ring C-O(phenoxo)-Mn(II)-N(pyridyl) chain. In addition, as 1 is oxidized to 1ox, the rearrangements in the coordination sphere resulting from the oxidation of one Mn(II) ion to Mn(III) are transmitted via the bridging Mn-O(phenoxo) bonds and cause structural changes that render the site of the second manganese ion unfit for the +3 state and hence unstable to reduction. Thus the electrolytic oxidation of 1ox in acetonitrile at 1.20 V takes up slightly greater than 1 F of charge/mol of 1ox, but the starting complex, 1ox, is recovered, showing the instability of the Mn2(III,III) state that is formed with respect to reduction to 1ox. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of 1 and 1ox over the temperature range from 1.8 to 300 K can be modeled with magnetic coupling constants J = -4.3 and -4.1 cm(-1), respectively showing the weak antiferromagnetic coupling between the two manganese ions in each dinuclear complex, which is commonly observed among similar phenoxo- and bis-1,3-carboxylato-bridged dinuclear Mn2(II,II) and Mn2(II,III) complexes.

Synthesis and spectroscopic and magnetic characterization of tris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1-yl)borate iron tricyanide building blocks, a cluster, and a one-dimensional chain of squares.

The synthesis and spectroscopic and magnetic characterization of several hydridotris(3,5-dimethylpyrazol-1yl)borate (Tp*) iron(II) and iron(III) tricyanide complexes, a rectangular cluster, and a one-dimensional chain of squares are described. Treatment of [NEt4][(Tp*)Fe(III)(CN)3] (3) with manganese(II) triflate in dimethylformamide (DMF) affords rectangular clusters (6, {[(Tp)Fe(CN)2(mu-CN)Mn(DMF)4]2[OTf]2}.2DMF), while tosylate salts afford one-dimensional networks (5, {Mn(II)(DMF)2(mu-OTs)(mu-NC)2(NC)Fe(III)(Tp*)}n) containing embedded [(Tp*)2Fe(III)2Mn(II)2(CN)6]2+ clusters via in situ trapping; the cluster and network crystallize in the monoclinic (6, P2(1)/n) and triclinic (5, P1) space groups, respectively. The 1-D network (5) appears to be derived from {cis-(mu-O3SC6H4Me)2Mn(II)(DMF)4}n (4, P2(1)/n), which is obtained via crystallization of Mn(OTs)2 from DMF/Et2O mixtures. For 4, magnetic studies indicate that the Mn(II) centers are magnetically isolated, with calculated J, g, and theta constants of 6.7 x 10(-3) cm(-1), 2.03, and -0.52 K. Additional magnetic studies of 5 and 6 indicate that the [(Tp*)Fe(III)(CN)3]- centers are highly anisotropic (g = 2.9) and are antiferromagnetically coupled to adjacent Mn(II) centers. For 5 and 6, fitting of the chiT vs T data via the Curie-Weiss expression affords Curie (6.25 and 10.8 cm(3) K mol(-1)) and Weiss (-14.37 and -8.80 K) constants that are consistent with antiferromagnetically coupled low-spin Fe(III) and high-spin Mn(II) centers; least-squares fitting of the chiT vs T data using molecular field theory affords g(avg.), J1, J2, and J' values of 2.25, -1.72, -0.58, and -0.12 cm(-1) for 5. Overall, bridging tosylates appear to be poor communicators of spin information. For 6, the g, J1, and J2 (2.15, -2.02, and -0.78 cm(-1)) values were obtained via least-squares fitting of the chiT vs T data using an expression derived using the Kambe vector coupling method; simulations of the data via MAGPACK afford g(avg.) and J(iso) values of 2.1 and -2.1 cm(-1).

Coordination complexes with cis-TCNE radical anion ligands. models of M[TCNE]2 magnets.

The synthesis and characterization of two manganese(II) complexes formally each featuring two cis-tetracyanoethylenide radical anionic ligands (TCNE*/-) are reported. In each case, tris(pyrazol-1-ylmethyl)amine serves as a capping ligand, blocking three facial coordination sites. Crystal structures show that the two TCNE anions in each molecule exhibit an intramolecular stacking interaction that forms what can be considered a coordinated (TCNE2)2- moiety. These molecules are presumed to be structural models of some of the local bonding in the family of amorphous, ferrimagnetic, M[TCNE]2.y(solvent) coordination polymer magnets. Magnetic measurements indicate that the (TCNE2)2- bridge is diamagnetic and not a good mediator of magnetic exchange, a result that might explain the observed lower ordering temperatures in some of the polymer magnets.

Syntheses, structures, and magnetic properties of inorganic-organic hybrid cobalt(II) phosphites containing bifunctional ligands.

Seven new cobalt(II) phosphites, [Co(HPO(3))(C(14)H(14)N(4))(H(2)O)(2)].2H(2)O (1), [Co(HPO(3))(C(22)H(18)N(4))].H(2)O (2), [Co(2)(HPO(3))(2)(C(22)H(18)N(4))(2)H(2)O].H(2)O (3), [Co(2)(HPO(3))(2)(C(12)H(10)N(4))(1.5)H(2)O].1.5H(2)O (4), [Co(HPO(3))(C(14)H(14)N(4))(0.5)].H(2)O (5), [Co(HPO(3))(C(18)H(16)N(4))(0.5)] (6), and [Co(HPO(3))(C(18)H(16)N(4))(0.5)] (7) were synthesized in the presence of 1,2-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L1), 1,4-bis(benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L2), 1,3-bis(benzimidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L3), 1,4-bis(1-imidazolyl)benzene (L4), 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene (L5), 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)naphthalene (L6), and 1,5-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)naphthalene (L7), respectively, and their structures were determined by X-ray crystallography. Compound 1 is a molecular compound in which two cobalt(II) ions are held together by double mu-O linkages. The inorganic framework of compounds 2 and 3 are composed of vertex-shared CoO(2)N(2)/CoO(3)N(2) and HPO(3) polyhedra that form four rings; these are further linked by an organic ligand to generate 2D sheets. Compounds 4 and 5 both have 1D inorganic structures, with the bifunctional ligands connected to each side of the ladder by coordination bonds to give 2D hybrid sheets. A 3D organically pillared hybrid framework is observed in 6 and 7. In 6, the stacking of the interlayer pillars gives rise to a small hydrophobic channel that extends through the entire structure parallel to the sheets. The temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility measurements of these compounds show weak interactions between the metal centers, mediated through the mu-O and/or O-P-O linkages.

Magnetically recoverable chiral catalysts immobilized on magnetite nanoparticles for asymmetric hydrogenation of aromatic ketones.

Novel heterogenized asymmetric catalysts were synthesized by immobilizing preformed Ru catalysts on magnetite nanoparticles via the phosphonate functionality and were characterized by a variety of techniques, including TEM, magnetization, and XRD. These nanoparticle-supported chiral catalysts were used for enantioselective heterogeneous asymmetric hydrogenation of aromatic ketones with very high enantiomeric excess values of up to 98.0%. The immobilized catalysts were easily recycled by magnetic decantation and reused for up to 14 times without loss of activity and enantioselectivity. Orthogonal nature of the present catalyst immobilization approach should allow the design of other superparamagnetic nanoparticle-supported asymmetric catalysts for a wide range of organic transformations.

Magneto-structural relationships in a series of dinuclear oxalato-bridged (diphenyldipyrazolylmethane)copper(II) complexes.

A series of oxalato-bridged dinuclear copper(II) complexes of the general formula [Cu2(Pz2CPh2)2(X)2(mu-C2O4)] (X = Cl- (1), NO3(-) (2), ClO4(-) (3); Pz2CPh2 = diphenyldipyrazolylmethane) or [Cu2(Pz(3m)2CPh2)2(H2O)2(mu-C2O4)](NO3)2 x H2O (4) (Pz(3m)2CPh2 = diphenylbis(3-methylpyrazolyl)methane) was synthesized where the axial ligand was systematically varied to study its effect on structure and magnetic coupling. The structures of compounds 1, 2, and 4 have been elucidated by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. [Cu2(Pz2CPh2)2(Cl)2(mu-C2O4)] and [Cu2(Pz2CPh2)2(NO3)2(mu-C2O4)] are isostructural and crystallize in the triclinic system, space group P, Z = 2, with a = 8.6155(8) A, b = 10.1435(9) A, c = 11.3612(11) A, alpha = 95.535(2) degrees, beta = 110.303(2) degrees, and gamma = 106.111(2) degrees for 1 and with a = 8.863(7) A, b = 10.241(9) A, c = 11.425(10) A, alpha = 98.985(14) degrees, beta = 110.449(13) degrees, and gamma = 103.664(14) degrees for 2. [Cu2(Pz(3m)2CPh2)2(H2O)2(mu-C2O4)] x NO3 x H2O crystallizes in the monoclinic system, space group C2/c, Z = 4, with a = 23.4588(14) A, b = 8.8568(5) A, c = 21.7818(13) A, alpha = gamma = 90 degrees, and beta = 100.8890(10) degrees. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility studies indicate that all four compounds are strongly antiferromagnetically coupled (2J/k = -364, -344 cm(-1) (2), -424 cm(-1) (3), and -378 cm(-1) (4)). Magnetic and EPR results are discussed with respect to structural parameters to explore possible magneto-structural correlations.

Single-molecule magnets constructed from cyanometalates: {[Tp*Fe(III)(CN)3M(II)(DMF)4]2[OTf]2} x 2DMF (M(II) = Co, Ni).

Square planar vs tetrahedral geometry in four coordinate iron(II) complexes.

The geometric preferences of a family of four coordinate, iron(II) d6 complexes of the general form L2FeX2 have been systematically evaluated. Treatment of Fe2(Mes)4 (Mes = 2,4,6-Me3C6H2) with monodentate phosphine and phosphite ligands furnished square planar trans-P2Fe(Mes)2 derivatives. Identification of the geometry has been accomplished by a combination of solution and solid-state magnetometry and, in two cases (P = PMe3, PEt2Ph), X-ray diffraction. In contrast, both tetrahedral and square planar coordination has been observed upon complexation of chelating phosphine ligands. A combination of crystallographic and magnetic susceptibility data for (depe)Fe(Mes)2 (depe = 1,2-bis(diethylphosphino)ethane) established a tetrahedral molecular geometry whereas SQUID magnetometry and Mössbauer spectroscopy on samples of (dppe)Fe(Mes)2 (dppe = 1,2-bis(diphenylphosphino)ethane) indicated a planar molecule. When dissolved in chlorinated solvents, the latter compound promotes chlorine atom abstraction, forming tetrahedral (dppe)Fe(Mes)Cl and (dppe)FeCl2. Ligand substitution reactions have been studied for both structural types and are rapid on the NMR time scale at ambient temperature.

Bis(1,2,3-trimethylindenyl)iron(III) 2,3-dicyanonaphtho-1,4-quinonide, a non-metallocene, charge-transfer salt metamagnet with complementary donor-acceptor geometries.

Bis(1,2,3-trimethylindenyl)iron(III) can be paired with 2,3-dicyanonaphtho-1,4-quinone to give an air-stable pi-stacked metamagnet with T(c) = 4.1 K, the first example of a non-metallocene CT salt magnet in this class. A single crystal X-ray structure of the Fe(1,2,3-Me(3)C(9)H(4))(2)[DCNQ] salt indicates that it consists of stacks of alternating donors and acceptors, in which the DCNQ ring systems are aligned with indenyl groups above and below, and the long axes of the DCNQ and the indenyl ligand are parallel to each other. This arrangement suggests that the magnetic properties arise from favorable interactions due to geometric similarities between the donor and acceptor, and not from a unique property of the donor itself.

A family of decamethylmetallocene charge-transfer salt magnets using methyl tricyanoethylenecarboxylate (MTCE) as the electron acceptor.

Methyl tricyanoethylenecarboxylate, MTCE, has been used as a one-electron acceptor building block for the synthesis of isomorphous decamethylmetallocene charge-transfer salt magnets of the formula [MCp*2][MTCE], M = Cr, Mn, and Fe. Functionally and electrochemically, MTCE is a hybrid between tetracyanoethylene (TCNE) and dimethyl dicyanofumarate (DMeDCF), two acceptors that have previously been found to support ferromagnetism. The X-ray crystal structure of the chromium analogue, [CrCp*2][MTCE], shows it to exist in the expected mixed stack structure in the orthorhombic space group Pnma with a = 14.739(3) A, b = 10.7869(19) A, and c = 15.771(3) A and Z = 4. As anticipated, all three family members exhibit dominant ferromagnetic coupling, which is presumed to reflect intrastack interactions. However, the bulk magnetic properties mostly differ from simple interpolations or extrapolations of the properties of their TCNE and DMeDCF analogues. Density functional theory calculations have been used to shed some light on this observation.
