[Removal of metal ions and dissolved organic compounds in the aqueous solution via micellar enhanced ultrafiltration].

With continuing stringent environmental regulation, the traditional techniques are incapable of reducing the concentration of dissolved organics and heavy metals to the levels required by law or prohibitively expensive. Surfactant-based separation process such as micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration has been extensively proposed. Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration has been demonstrated to be effective in removal of heavy metals and/or organic contaminants from wastewater stream. The process can be low energy cost and easily included in a whole process. Micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration has been shown to be a promising method for the removal of low-levelsof heavy metal ions and organic compounds from industrial effluents. This paper introduces the working mechanism, main factors of MEUF and the selection of surfactant and membrane. The lasted study progress on the application of micellar-enhanced ultrafiltration is reviewed. The recovery and reuse of surfactant from the retentate and permeate are also discussed.

[Extraction of heavy metals from contaminated soils with EDTA and their redistribution of fractions].

EDTA was used as extractant to leach Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd from tailing soils in soil columns. The redistributions of Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd were determined using the sequential extraction procedure of the optimized European Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) before and after extraction. The results indicated that EDTA was an effective extracting agent because of its strong chelating ability for different heavy metals. Percentage extractabilities of metal followed the sequence of Cd>Zn>Cu>Pb. The four fractions of metal could be extracted by EDTA and the proportions of Pb, Zn, Cu and Cd in the four fractions varied largely after EDTA extraction. The extraction efficiency of EDTA on the acid-extractable fraction was significant in shallow soil column, while in deeper soil column, a descent of the extraction efficiency on reduced, oxidizable and residual fractions was obtained. And heavy metals chelated by EDTA were more easily desorption by soil particles with the depth of the soil columns increased.

[Culture medium and grading culture technics for bioflocculant production by Paenibacillus polymyxa GA1].

A bacterial strain named GA1 which can produce bioflocculant with high flocculating activity was isolated from soil. The strain was identified as Paenibacillus polymyxa according to its morphological, physiological and biochemical characters, as well as 16S rDNA sequence (GenBank Accession number: DQ166375) similarity comparison. The results indicated that sucrose and yeast extract were the optimal carbon and nitrogen sources for bioflocculant production. Furthermore, the mass ratio of sucrose to yeast extract and the optimal sucrose concentration were ascertained. The optimum component proportion of medium (g/L) is sucrose 40.0, yeast extract 4.0, K2HPO4 5.0, KH2PO4 2.0, NaCl 0.1, MgSO4 0.2. The culture conditions including initial pH, temperature, agitation rate and inoculation quantity of strain GA1 were ascertained. Based on the relation of bacterium growth and bioflocculant production, grading culture was applied to bioflocculant production of GA1. The experimental result show that grading culture can keep high bioflocculant yield as well as shorten time of flocculant production.

[Nitritation-ANAMMOX process for treatment of ammonium rich wastewater].

Combination of a nitritation process and anoxic ammonium oxidation (ANAMMOX) process for the treatment of ammonia rich influents is evaluated. Herein the combined process was studied with manmade synthetic wastewater. Research results show that when the hydraulic retention time (HRT) was I day, the nitritation activity was stable and the influent ammonium concentration has little effect on it. When the influent ammonium concentration is 400-600 mg/L, the effluent nitrite concentration is always between 260 mg/L and 280 mg/L, so the effluent nitrite/ammonium ratio can be adjust by control the influent ammonium concentration. The total nitrogen elimination was depended strongly on the nitrite/ammonium ratio in the inlet of the ANAMMOX reactor. When the inlet ammonium was 480 mg/L of the combined process, the nitrite/ammonium ratio of the nitritation process was about 1.2, the total nitrogen elimination was 84%.

[Influence of different sorbents on adsorption effect of ammonia and compost property in aerobic composting].

The three kinds of sorbents of 0.18% KH2PO4, 0.06% KH2PO4 + 15% sawdust mixture and 30% sawdust are added separately into composting to investigate their adsorption effect on ammonia. The experiment results exhibite that all the sorbents can restrain ammonia volatilizing. But sorption of 0.18% KH2PO4 sorbnet was best of all, one of 0.06% KH2PO4 + 15% sawdust mixture sorbent was secondly, one of 30% sawdust sorbent was thirdly. The total nitrogen loss ratios were separately reduced 25%, 23% and 17% after adding the three kinds of sorbents into composting. However, excessive KH2PO4 would produce negative influence on compost property, such as pH value being lessened, microorganism activity being reduced, and finally resulting in the reduction of biodegradation ratio of organic matter also. Comparing with it, there were not these problems as 0.06% KH2PO4 + 15% sawdust mixture being sorbent. The mixture sorbent not only produced finer adsorption effect on ammonia, but also made biodegradation ratio of organic matter to be promoted 7%.

[Bayesian regularized BP neural network model for quantitative relationship between the electrochemical reduction potential and molecular structures of chlorinated aromatic compounds].

Bayesian regularized BP neural network (BRBPNN) technique was applied in QSPR model in environmental field. The BRBPNN model for quantitative relationship between the electrochemical reduction potential (ERP) and chemical structures of 87 chlorinated aromatic compounds was established. The structure descriptor pool is consisted of Cl number (Cl), molecular weight (MW) and 6 quantum chemistry parameters which are calculated by MOPAC2000 built in ChemOffice2004, including energy of the highest occupied molecular orbital (E(HOMO)), energy of the lowest occupied molecular orbital (E(LUMO)), heat of formation(HF), dipole(DIP), electronic energy(EE), core-core repulsion(CCR). The achieved optimal network structure was 6-20-1, which possessed stronger fitting and prediction capacity than that of the stepwise linear regression and with the correlation coefficients square and the mean square error for the training set and the test set as 0.999 and 0.000105, 0.965 and 0.00159 respectively. The sum of square weights between each input neuron and the hidden layer of BRBPNN(6-20-1) indicate the effect of descriptor on the electric potential declining in the order of ELUMO > EHOMO > HF> CCR > EE > DIP. The scatter diagrams show that the EE descriptors had positive effect on ERP, and ELUMO, HF, DIP had negative effects, and EHOMO and CCR showed ambiguous effects. Results show that Bayesian regularized BP neural network is of automated regularization parameter selection capability and thus may ensure the excellent generation ability and robustness. This study threw more light on the applicability of electrochemical treatment for the chlorinated aromatic compounds and the analysis on electrochemical reduction mechanism.

[Lignin degradation by Penicillium simplicissimum].

A strain of fungi was isolated from soil, which was identified as Penicillium simplicissimum. This strain was capable of utilizing several lignin model compounds, making aromatic dyes decoloration and degrading natural lignin. All these results proved that Penicillium simplicissimum has ligninolytic ability. Three kinds of enzymes were believed to be the most important catalyzes in the biodegrading process. They are lignin peroxidase (LiP), laccase (Lac) and hemicellulase. And they always work synergistically. After 25 days' incubation, the amount of rice straw lignin decreased 0.23g, and the degrading rate was 14.94%. Different from the degrading mechanism of the white-rot fungi, the lignin degradation by P. simplicissimum mainly happened during the primary metabolism and it was greatly influenced by the pH of media, the concentration of Cu2+ and Mn2+.

A novel biosorbent: characterization of the spent mushroom compost and its application for removal of heavy metals.

The spent mushroom compost of Lentinus edodes was used as a biosorbent for adsorbing cadmium, lead and chromium from solutions under batch conditions for the first time. Titration of the biomass revealed that it contained at least three types of functional groups. The Fourier transform infrared spectrometry showed that the carboxyl, phosphoryl, phenolic groups were the main groups. The simulated values of pKH and molar quantity were 5.00 and 0.44 mmol/g, 7.32 and 1.38 mmol/g, 10.45 and 1.44 mmol/g, respectively. The biosorption ability increased with pH in acid condition. When 10 mg/L biomass dosage was added in, there was no significant increment of metal uptake. The maximum uptake estimated with the Langmiur isotherm model were 833.33 mg/g for Cd(II), 1000.00 mg/g for Pb(II) and 44.44 mg/g for Cr(III), respectively. All the results showed that vast potential sorption capacity was existed in the biomass for adsorbing these three kinds of metals studied.

Application of Bayesian regularized BP neural network model for analysis of aquatic ecological data-a case study of chlorophyll-a prediction in Nanzui water area of Dongting Lake.

Bayesian regularized BP neural network(BRBPNN) technique was applied in the chlorophyll-a prediction of Nanzui water area in Dongting Lake. Through BP network interpolation method, the input and output samples of the network were obtained. After the selection of input variables using stepwise/multiple linear regression method in SPSS 11.0 software, the BRBPNN model was established between chlorophyll-a and environmental parameters, biological parameters. The achieved optimal network structure was 3-11-1 with the correlation coefficients and the mean square errors for the training set and the test set as 0.999 and 0.00078426, 0.981 and 0.0216 respectively. The sum of square weights between each input neuron and the hidden layer of optimal BRBPNN models of different structures indicated that the effect of individual input parameter on chlorophyll-a declined in the order of alga amount > secchi disc depth (SD) > electrical conductivity (EC). Additionally, it also demonstrated that the contributions of these three factors were the maximal for the change of chlorophyll-a concentration, total phosphorus (TP) and total nitrogen (TN) were the minimal. All the results showed that BRBPNN model was capable of automated regularization parameter selection and thus it may ensure the excellent generation ability and robustness. Thus, this study laid the foundation for the application of BRBPNN model in the analysis of aquatic ecological data(chlorophyll-a prediction) and the explanation about the effective eutrophication treatment measures for Nanzui water area in Dongting Lake.

Effect of pyrolysis temperature and hold time on the characteristic parameters of adsorbent derived from sewage sludge.

According to the Doehlert's matrix method, the adsorbent derived from sewage sludge was prepared through chemical activation under controlling the pyrolysis temperature and hold time. The characteristic parameters including the total yield, adsorption of methylene blue, adsorption of iodine, BET surface area, micro-pore volume are 35%--49%, 16.5--38 mg/g, 285--362 mg/g, 185--359 m2/g, and 0.112--0.224 m3/g, respectively. According to the experimental data, the multi-linear regression method was adopted to fit the relations between the characteristic parameters and influential factors. At final, through optimization method, the optimal adsorbent is obtained when using 62 min as hold time and 1105K as pyrolysis temperature. Under the conditions, the adsorbent was produced and compared the characteristic parameters with model forecast value, the coherence is satisfied.

[Optimization of piggery wastewater treatment with combined anaerobic hydrolysis and SBR process].

Anaerobic sequence batch reactor and aerobic sequence batch reactor were combined to treat the piggery wastewater. The ASBR was used to digest the wastewater for primary organic matter removal. Infections of digestion time to the wastewater's BOD/COD and to the nitrogen removal in behind SBR were studied. The result indicated that the wastewater with 36 hours' digestion retained high BOD/COD ratio of about 0.4. The nitrogen removal efficiency of this kind of wastewater in behind SBR was high with the effluent NH4+-N concentration less than 10 mg/L and a removal ratio higher than 99%. The total BOD5 removal ratio of A/O SBR was higher than 98% but the effluent COD(Cr) concentration couldn't meet the discharging standard before coagulating sedimentation.

[Effect of millimeter therapy in burning mouth syndrome].

OBJECTIVE: To observe the millimeter wave therapy responses in patients with burning mouth syndrome. METHODS: Eighty patients were randomized divided into 4 groups. The first group was treated with both millimeter wave irradiation and routine medication, the second group with millimeter wave irradiation, the third with pretending millimeter wave irradiation and routine medication and the fourth with routine medication. Pain, extravasated blood level and autonomic nerve system condition were double-blindly evaluated either before or after the treatment. RESULTS: Statistically significant difference (P < 0.05) was found as the degree of pain was compared before and after treatment of all the 4 groups. The first and second group, which were affected by the millimeter wave irradiation, had obvious improvements in the extravasated blood level and autonomic nerve system condition (P < 0.05). When the 4 groups were compared with each other, there were significant differences (P < 0.05) between the first and the fourth groups, and the second and the fourth groups regarding the reduction of pain. According to extravasated blood level, significant differences (P < 0.05) were found in the first and third or fourth groups, the second and third or fourth groups. CONCLUSIONS: The irradiation of holographic point by millimeter wave can improve the patients' pain, extravasated blood level and autonomic nerve system condition. It might provide a new treatment method for burning mouth syndrome.

Water environmental planning considering the influence of non-linear characteristics.

In practical water environmental planning, the influence of the non-linear characteristics on the benefit of environmental investment was seldom taken into consideration. This paper demonstrates that there exist a lot of non-linear behaviors in water environment by emphatically analyzing the influence of the non-linear characteristics of the economic scale, the meandering river and the model on water environmental planning, which will make a certain impact on the water environmental planning that sometimes cannot be neglected. This paper also preliminarily explores how to integrate the non-linear characteristics into water environmental planning. The results showed that compared with traditional methods, water environmental planning considering non-linear characteristics has its prevalence and it is necessary to develop the relevant planning theories and methods.

A novel technology for quick acclimation of an anaerobic microbial consortia used for biodegrading teraphthalic acid (TA).

The seed sludge originated from a methane fermentation reactor was enriched and acclimated with TA as sole carbon source under nitrate respiration mode first for 6 week, and then can be turned to methane fermentation conditions. After 6 weeks processing, the specific rate of TA degradation under nitrate respiration mode reached 23.8 mgTA/(L.gVSS), more than two times of that under methane fermentation mode 11.4 mg TA/(L.gVSS). The TA reductive cleavers' population density increased about 6 times and 20 times after 30 days and 90 days acclimation. After a total of 90 days for the enrichment and acclimation, the fermentative bacteria which originally existed in the seed sludge nearly disappeared, and instead of them, the TA reductive and cleaving bacteria group was formed in the new consortia, which was confirmed by the MPN counts and roll tube counts. Compared with the control experiment, the acclimation period can be shortened by about 50%.

A two-stage anaerobic system for biodegrading wastewater containing terephthalic acid and high strength easily degradable pollutants.

The high strength easily biodegradable pollutants (represented by CODE) are strong inhibitors of terephthalic acid (TA) anaerobic biodegradation. At the same time, TA can inhibit easily biodegradable pollutants removal under anaerobic conditions to a limited extent. This mutual inhibition could happen and cause a low removal efficiency of both TA and CODE, when the effluent from TA workshops containing TA and easily biodegradable pollutants are treated by a single anaerobic reactor system. Based upon the treatment kinetics analysis of both TA degradation and CODE removal, a two-stage up-flow anaerobic sludge blanket and up-flow fixed film reactor(UASB-UAFF) system for dealing with this kind of wastewater was developed and run successfully at laboratory scale. An UASB reactor with the methanogenic consortium as the first stage removes the easily biodegradable pollutants(CODE). An UAFF reactor as the second stage is mainly in charge of TA degradation. At a CODE loading of 15.3 g/(L.d) and a TA loading of 1.4 g/(L.d), HRT 18.5 h, the CODE and TA removal rate of the system reached 89.2% and 71.6%, respectively.
