Electric-field-induced redistribution of polar nano-regions in a relaxor ferroelectric.

Relaxor ferroelectrics, with their strong dependence of polarization on the applied electric field, are of considerable technological importance. On a microscopic scale, however, there exists competition as well as coexistence between short-range and long-range polar order. The conventional picture is that the polar nano-regions (PNRs) that appear at high temperatures beyond the Curie transition, form nuclei for the field-induced long-range order at low temperatures. Here, we report high-energy X-ray diffuse-scattering measurements on the relaxor Pb(Zn(1/3)Nb(2/3))O(3) (PZN) to study the short-range polar order under an electric field applied along the [111] direction. In contrast to conventional expectations, the overall diffuse-scattering intensity is not suppressed. On the other hand, the field induces a marked change on the shape of the three-dimensional diffuse-scattering intensity pattern, corresponding to a redistribution of PNRs in real space. We show that these surprising results are consistent with a model in which the PNRs with [110]-type polarizations, orthogonal to that of the surrounding environment, are embedded and persist in the [111]-polarized ferroelectric order of the bulk.

High-q-resolution neutron scattering technique using triple-axis spectrometers.

A new technique is presented that gives a substantial increase in the wavevector q resolution of triple-axis spectrometers by matching the measurement wavevector q to the reflection taua of a perfect-crystal analyzer. A relative Bragg width of deltaq/Q approximately 10(-4) can be achieved with reasonable collimation settings. This technique is very useful in measuring small structural changes and line broadenings that cannot be accurately measured with conventional set-ups, while keeping all the strengths of a triple-axis spectrometer.

[Desmoplastic small round cell tumor: report of 2 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To recognize the characteristics of desmoplastic small round cell tumor (DSRCT) and improve the standard of diagnosis. METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data on the treatment of 2 patients with DSRCT in terms of their conditions, tissue sources, pathologic characteristics, immunohistochemical methods, clinical manifestation, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis. RESULTS: Clinical manifestations were complicated. The 2 patients were mis diagnosed before operation. Their tumors consisted of irregular nests of small and round cells, with nuclear hyperchromatism and scant cytoplasm embedded in a plenty of fibrous connective tissues. The edge of the nest was clear, with different sizes and shapes. Immunohistochemically, the 2 patients were positive for CK or EMA, NSE, des and vim of the epithelium, nerve, muscle and interstitial. They died 9 months after operation. CONCLUSIONS: The tumor may occur in the abdomen, pelvic cavity and other sites, with different clinical manifestations. Routine examination should be replaced by immunohistochemical test for correct diagnosis of the tumor. Prognosis of most patients is not good.
