Why is formate synthesis insensitive to copper surface structures?

Experiments have revealed that formate synthesis from carbon dioxide and hydrogen is structure insensitive to copper catalyst surfaces, while the reverse formate decomposition reaction is structure sensitive. The present ab initio density functional theory (DFT) calculations show that the reaction of CO2 with surface atomic hydrogen initially leads to the formation of unstable monodentate formate, which has similar adsorption energies on Cu(111), Cu(100), and Cu(110). The structure of the transition state is similar to that of monodentate formate. It is also shown that gaseous CO2 is directly reacted with surface hydrogen, as suggested by previous experiments. The position of the similar transition state and the direct reaction mechanism well explain the similar energetic pathways, that is, the structure insensitivity.

Theoretical studies of the substitution patterns of boron-nitrogen (BN) fullerenes: from C50 up to C20B15N15 CBN ball.

Study on the patterns of successive BN pair substitution in C50 fullerene and the chemical and electronic properties of these substitutionally doped heterofullerenes has been carried out with semiempirical (AM1 and MNDO) and density functional (B3LYP/3-21G) theories. The BN units prefer to stay together following "single bond", "hexagon filling", and "continuity and equatorial belt" rules. The driving force governing the stabilities of these BN-doped fullerenes is the strain of the cage. Compared with C50, the redox activity of C50-2x(BN)x (x = 1-15) isomers decreases and becomes weaker by increasing the number of BN units, while the aromaticity of the C50-2x(BN)x derivatives decreases and is independent of the number of BN units but related to the substitution positions. The main infrared absorptions are similar for all the C50-2x(BN)x isomers and the infrared spectrum becomes simpler and stronger with increasing the number of BN groups.

Isomerism and aromaticity of heterofullerene C70-nPn (n=2-10).

A systematic investigation on possible structures of heterofullerenes C70-nPn (n=2-10) has been performed employing semiempirical MNDO and ab initio methods. The stabilities decrease with increasing number of heteroatoms. The structures whose carbon atoms are substituted in the para pattern across the equatorial hexagons correspond to the most stable isomers. The isomeric pattern of P-doped C70 systems follows our previously proposed correlation between the isomerism of the fullerene adducts C60Xn/C70Xn and those of the heterofullerenes C60-nNn or C60-nBn /C70-nNn or C70-nBn. The aromaticity of the most stable structures of heterofullerenes is studied to investigate the heteroatom doping effect on the electron delocalization of the fullerene cage.
