Single-beam holography for Ag nanoparticle-embedded two-dimensional binary metallodielectric photonic crystals.

Absolute photonic bandgaps of photonic crystals can be increased by reducing the structural symmetry and/or by enhancing the refractive index contrast. We have experimentally demonstrated a single-beam holography for creating Ag nanoparticle-embedded 2D binary photonic microstructures by adding a different diameter rod in the center of each original 2D honeycomb lattice for simultaneously realizing both symmetry reduction and the enhancement of the index contrast of PC structures.

Surface plasmon interferometric microscopy for three-dimensional imaging of dynamic processes.

A method, which we named surface plasmon interferometric microscopy, for real-time displaying of the dynamic evolution of the refractive index (RI) of a sample in three-dimensions is demonstrated experimentally. The Fourier fringe analysis technique is employed to get the phase variations of the samples by demodulating the interference patterns captured by a CCD camera, and the 3D RI distribution can be obtained through numerical interpolation from the relation between the phase and the RI of the samples. Our method may provide an interesting way to monitor fast dynamics of physical, biological, and chemical processes in real time.

All-angle broadband negative refraction of metal waveguide arrays in the visible range: theoretical analysis and numerical demonstration.

In this Letter, we introduce a simple metal waveguide array for realizing all-angle wide frequency bandwidth negative refraction from the visible to infrared frequencies. Theoretical analysis from the rigorous coupled-wave theory reveals that the negative coupling constant resulting from the anomalous coupling of guided surface plasmon polariton modes contributes to the negative refraction. The analytical results are confirmed by finite-difference time-domain numerical simulations. Our result provides an alternative way to construct robust all-angle negative refractive materials operating in a wide range of frequency from the near-infrared to the visible range.

Nanoscale metal waveguide arrays as plasmon lenses.

Propagation of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) through a set of nanoscale metal waveguide arrays (MWGAs) is numerically simulated by using the finite-difference time-domain method. The results reveal that MWGAs show an interesting lens effect on SPPs: SPPs can be strongly focused or defocused by the MWGAs, which we attribute to anomalous coupling of SPPs in MWGAs. Our results imply interesting potential for MWGAs in, for example, nonlinear optics, optical imaging, and nanosensing.

Improving the sensitivity of single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) to study the variability of PLMVd.

Single-strand conformation polymorphism (SSCP) was used to characterize viroids. Eight cDNA clones, which showed identical profiles in preliminary existing SSCP analysis but had different sequences, were chosen to develop a sensitive SSCP technique for identifying the variability of Peach latent mosaic viroid (PLMVd). Polyacrylamide Gel Electrophoresis (PAGE) conditions were optimized to improve the sensitivity of the existing SSCP, and a modified SSCP protocol was developed. The results indicated that the modified SSCP protocol provided an overall sensitivity in identifying the variability of these clones, and showed higher resolution than the existing one and its improved versions. As shown by sequence analyses of cDNA clones of PLMVd and the modified SSCP profiles, there is no close correlation between the number of base changes and variation of the modified SSCP band patterns. The potential use of the modified SSCP analysis is discussed as a tool for viroids characterization.

Surface plasmon polariton propagation in nanoscale metal gap waveguides.

Based on finite-difference time-domain simulation of the propagation characteristics of surface plasmon polaritons (SPPs) in optical circuits made from metal gap waveguides (MGWs) with nanometric gap widths, we theoretically demonstrate that two structures that consist of splitting and recombining MGWs and of coupling MGWs can be used as nanoscale Mach-Zehnder interferometers. MGW arrays show capabilities for array imaging and for controlling the flow of SPPs. Other potential applications of coupling MGWs, as SPP switches, directional couplers, and even as a nanoscale counterpart for observing linear and nonlinear dynamic behavior of electromagnetic fields, are also predicted and discussed. Our results point to an interesting way to manipulate optical signals and provide efficient sensing in nanophotonic architectures.

Arrangements of four beams for any Bravais lattice.

A single geometric model based on a new concept of a reciprocal primitive pyramid (RPP) in reciprocal space is proposed for investigation of relationships between any three-dimensional (3D) lattice and arrangements of four beams (AFBs) that produce the lattice. A ternary linear equation set, described for the one-to-one correspondence between a RPP and AFB, can readily reveal all AFBs for the same lattice (AFBSLs). Quantitative AFBs for bcc and fcc real lattices are illustrated to show that various AFBSLs can modulate the properties of a photonic bandgap (PBG) both by tuning the lattice constant and by changing the lattice-point shape. This fact may yield the appropriate AFB for a complete 3D PBG with the desired center wavelength. The nonuniqueness of AFBSLs can provide abundant choices for persons who plan interference experiments, especially for holographic fabrication of 3D photonic crystals (PCs).
