[Correlation of multiple primary lung cancer with bronchial and alveolar epithelial dysplasia].

OBJECTIVE: To investigate the correlation of multiple primary lung cancer with bronchial epithelial dysplasia and atypical adenomatous hyperplasia of bronchiolo-alveolar epithelium. METHODS: Careful pathological examinations were performed on 114 surgical specimens of primary lung carcinoma. The correlation of multiple primary lung cancer with bronchial epithelial dysplasia and atypical adenomatous hyperplasia of bronchiolo-alveolar epithelium was analyzed. RESULTS: Of 114 cases of primary lung cancer,13 cases of multiple primary lung cancer (11.4 %) was identifiedìwhich consisted of 6 cases containing two primary bronchogenic carcinoma and 7 containing one bronchogenic carcinoma and one bronchiolo-alveolar carcinoma. The rate of multiple primary lung cancers was significantly higher in individuals with high grade bronchial epithelial dysplasia than in those with low grade dysplasia (r=0.238, P<0.05). CONCLUSION: Bronchial and alveolar epithelial cells may develop malignancy synchronously or metachronously. The probability of developing multiple primary lung cancer will increase in the lungs with extensive and severe bronchial epithelial dysplasia.

[Inquire into factors influencing recurrence following resection of carcinoma of the head of pancreas].

OBJECTIVE: Inquire into factors influencing recurrence following resection of carcinoma of the head of pancreas to raise survival rate of pancreatic cancer. METHODS: We performed a retrospective review of 56 pancreatic resections with carcinoma of the head of pancreas operated from January 1995 to December 1998. 35 patients tolerated the Whipple operadure in comparison with 21 patients received the extended radical operation contemporaneously. All patients were followed up more than 3 years to find out factors influencing recurrence following resection of carcinoma of the head of pancreas. RESULTS: Deaths within 3-years after operation were due to recurrence, the cumulative rate of death from recurrence 51.4% in the Whipple procedure and 42.9% in the Extended radical operative procedure, significant difference in two groups. CONCLUSION: Tumour size exceed 4 cm with severe retropancreatic invasion, lymph node involvement surpass the second group are at high risk for recurrence.

[Brain processing component during face cognition--N170 revealed by event-related potentials].

Objective. To observe features of early component N170 during face recognition. Method. Scalp distribution, amplitude, and latency of N170 was recorded during face recognition tasks in 16 normal subjects. Result. N170 was elicited by the face stimuli in only half of the subjects and the amplitude was modulated by cognitive tasks. Conclusion. N170 reflects not only face structure encoding unit but also direct visual processing unit. Whether N170 reflects the specialty in face recognition needs further study. The latency of N170 showed left hemisphere dominance and the amplitude showed right hemisphere dominance, indicating that it is not pure right hemisphere dominance in face recognition.
