Boron workers in China: exploring work and lifestyle factors related to boron exposure.

This article describes the lifestyle patterns of boron mining and processing workers (N=936) and a comparison group (N=251) in northeast China, and explores relationships between boron exposure and reproductive health. An English version of an interview guide addressing areas of work and lifestyle relevant to boron exposure and metabolism was developed by an occupational health research team, translated to Chinese, and translated back, for clarity. Modifications incorporated suggestions from a local community advisory board and boron industry workers; the translation-back translation process was reapplied, and cultural and semantic equivalence was attained. Results from the interviews showed more than 64% of workers and comparison group participants smoked tobacco and more than 92% reported exposure to environmental tobacco smoke. Boron workers and the comparison group varied in their food intake and alcohol consumption, but not in their smoking habits. Thirty-four percent of boron workers reported eating in the contaminated work area. Nearly all boron workers (99%) showered or bathed after work, although approximately 10% redressed in their contaminated clothes. Reproductive health outcomes were explored, including delayed pregnancy, multiple births, spontaneous miscarriages, induced abortions, stillbirths, and an unusual ratio of male to female offspring. Implications for occupational health nurses and recommendations for future research are provided.

Platelet factor 4 and interleukin-8 CXC chemokine heterodimer formation modulates function at the quaternary structural level.

The apparent complexity of biology increases as more biomolecular interactions that mediate function become known. We have used NMR spectroscopy and molecular modeling to provide direct evidence that tetrameric platelet factor-4 (PF4) and dimeric interleukin-8 (IL8), two members of the CXC chemokine family, readily interact by exchanging subunits and forming heterodimers via extension of their antiparallel beta-sheet domains. We further demonstrate using functional assays that PF4/IL8 heterodimerization has a direct and significant consequence on the biological activity of both chemokines. Formation of heterodimers enhances the anti-proliferative effect of PF4 on endothelial cells in culture, as well as the IL8-induced migration of CXCR2 vector-transfected Baf3 cells. These results suggest that CXC chemokine biology, and perhaps cytokine biology in general, may be functionally modulated at the molecular level by formation of heterodimers. This concept, in turn, has implications for designing chemokine/cytokine variants with modified biological properties.

Fast detection of fluoroacetamide in body fluid using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry after solid-phase microextraction.

A novel method for fast determination of fluoroacetamide, a kind of organic fluorine pesticide, in blood and urine samples was developed with acetamide as an internal standard using gas chromatography/mass spectrometry (GC/MS) after solid-phase microextraction (SPME) technique. The SPME was performed by immersing a PDMS fiber of 100 microm coating thickness in a sample solution for 25 min at 70 degrees C with (CH(3)CH(2))(4)NBr to improve the extraction efficiency. After a GC sample injection, the extracted fluoroacetamide was desorbed from the fiber for 4 min to perform the GC/MS detection with a HP-PLOT Q capillary column. The analytical conditions were optimized by examining systematically, the effects of experimental parameters on the ratio of characteristic ion peak areas of fluoroacetamide to acetamide. Under optimal conditions, the ratio was proportional to the concentration of fluoroacetamide ranging from 5.0 to 90 microg/ml with a detection limit of 1.0 microg/ml. The average recovery of fluoroacetamide in blood sample was 92.2%. The established method could be used for the fast and convenient measurement of fluoroacetamide in poisoned sample.

Children's respiratory morbidity prevalence in relation to air pollution in four Chinese cities.

We examined respiratory health effects of long-term exposure to ambient air pollution in 7,621 schoolchildren residing in eight districts of four Chinese cities. The four cities exhibited wide between-city and within-city gradients in ambient levels of four size fractions of particulate matter [less than or equal to 2.5 micro m in aerodynamic diameter (PM(2.5)), between 2.5 and 10 micro m (PM(10-2.5)), less than or equal to 10 micro m (PM(10)), and total suspended particulates (TSP)] and two gaseous pollutants (SO(2) and NO(x)). Informed consent and written responses to questionnaires about children's personal, residential, and family information, as well as their health histories and status, were obtained with the help of the parents and the school personnel. We used a two-stage regression approach in data analyses. In the first-stage logistic regressions, we obtained logits of district-specific prevalence of wheeze, asthma, bronchitis, hospitalization for respiratory diseases, persistent cough, and persistent phlegm, adjusted for covariates representing personal, household, and family parameters. Some of these covariates were found to be risk factors of children's respiratory health, including being younger in the study group, being male, having been breast-fed, sharing bedrooms, sharing beds, room being smoky during cooking, eye irritation during cooking, parental smoking, and a history of parental asthma. In several of the second-stage variance-weighted linear regressions, we examined associations between district-specific adjusted prevalence rates and district-specific ambient levels of each pollutant. We found positive associations between morbidity prevalence and outdoor levels of PM of all size fractions, but the association appeared to be stronger for coarse particles (PM(10-2.5)). The results also present some evidence that ambient levels of NO(x) and SO(2) were positively associated with children's respiratory symptoms, but the evidence for these two gaseous pollutants appeared to be weaker than that for the PM.

[Interaction between microorganisms and heavy metals and its application].

Interactions between microorganisms and heavy metals were expatriated in many ways. Because of their resistance and detoxification to heavy metals, microorganisms are able to leach, absorb and transform heavy metals, which has been actively applied to extract heavy metals from low-rate ore in mine exploitation. Although heavy metals are toxic to microorganisms population and harmful to its processes, some special microorganisms have been applied to the treatment of industrial waste materials and the remediation of soils polluted by heavy metals. The application of microbiological biomass and activity to evaluating the pollution situation and ecological risk of heavy metals in environment media is also significant.

A randomized, controlled clinical trial on meropenem versus imipenem/cilastatin for the treatment of bacterial infections.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the efficacy and safety of meropenem in Chinese patients, we conducted a study for the treatment of patients with lower respiratory tract infections, urinary tract infections and other infections. METHODS: A total of 182 hospitalized patients were enrolled in the study. 90 patients received 500 mg meropenem every 12 hours (or 1 g every 12 hours if necessary) and 92 patients received imipenem/cilastatin 500 mg/500 mg every 12 hours (or 1 g every 12 hours if necessary) by intravenous infusion. The duration of treatment was 7 - 14 days for both groups. RESULTS: Seventy of 90 cases receiving meropenem and 70 of 92 cases receiving imipenem/cilastatin were assessable for clinical efficacy. The overall efficacy rates were 90% for the meropenem group and 87% for the imipenem/cilastatin group, and the bacterial eradication rates were 86% in both groups. 93 (76%) of 123 strains isolated from patients produced beta-lactamases. Adverse drug reactions were evaluated in 72 cases in the meropenem group and 70 cases in the imipenem/cilastatin group. The adverse drug reaction rates were 9.7% and 8.6%, respectively. The results showed that there were no statistical differences between these two groups (P > 0.05). CONCLUSION: Meropenem is effective and safe for the treatment of bacterial infections caused mainly by beta-lactamase-producing strains.
