Cellular cardiomyoplasty by catheter-based infusion of stem cells in clinical settings.

Myocardial infarction is the leading cause of congestive heart failure and death in the industrialized world. However, the intrinsic repair mechanism of the heart is inadequate. Current therapy is limited in preventing ventricular remodeling, but can not regenerate the lost cardiomyocytes. Recent interests have been focused on cellular cardiomyoplasty which is an outside intervention to support the reparative process in the heart through transplantation of stem/progenitor cells or cardiac cells. Cellular cardiomyoplasty with stem cells is a possible option to reverse the adverse hemodynamic and neurohormonal imbalance after myocardial infarction. Experimental studies and clinical trials suggest that cellular cardiomyoplasty may benefit tissue perfusion and contractile performance of the injured heart. Although the mechanisms are still intensively debated, cellular cardiomyoplasty with stem cells has already been introduced into the clinical settings. However, it is an important challenge how stem cells are delivered to targeted area. In early studies on animals, intramyocardial injection of stem cells after thoracotomy is the predominant transplantation route which is not suitable for most patients in clinical settings. Then the catheter-based infusion of stem cells is clinically introduced and rapidly developed in patients because of the safety, convenience and mini-invasion. We mainly review the progress in catheter-based transplantation with stem cells in order to fully understand the application of various intervention-based approaches to stem cells transplantation in clinical settings.

[Study on second filtering algorithm based on tracing the interfering spectral peaks of radar non-contact life-parameter detection system].

To develop a filtering algorithm which could trace the spectral peaks of the interference and which was used to extract the breath signal with the same band interference in radar non-contact life-detecting system, second filtering algorithm was studied. Through first filtering, the probable interfering spectral peaks (ISP) could be detected by Yule-Walker spectrum estimating and could be located by calculating the coefficients of normalized cross-correlation function according to standard breath signal. Thus the breath signal could be extracted through a second filtering. By using the second filtering algorithm (SFA), the same band interfering spectral peaks with breath signal could be recognized and inhibited. So we conclude that the same band mono-ISP could be inhibited by using SFA and breath signals could be effectively extracted.

[Measurement and amendment of complex-permittivities of distilled water and NaCl solution].

In this experiment, the complex-permittivities at 2 450 MHz of distilled water and various NaCl solutions were measured separately, and acquired data were analyzed and amended. The system develooped on the basis of this experiment is of great significance to studying the measurement of complex-permittivities of high-loss biologic tissues by perturbational method.

[On excellent education mode of biomedical engineering in USA].

Based on the rankings of the best undergraduate/graduate biomedical engineering programs from the USA News & World Report, we have made a comprehensive analysis on the excellent education mode in USA 2002. It is hoped that the results as reference materials will be useful to our biomedical education at home.

[Establishment of the animal model of induced high-cholesterol-atherosclerotic erectile dysfunction and the mechanisms of atherosclerotic erectile dysfunction].

OBJECTIVE: To establish the animal model of atherosclerotic erectile dysfunction induced by high-cholesterol diet and explore the mechanisms of atherosclerotic erectile dysfunction. METHODS: Thirty male rabbits were divided into two groups randomly: normal diet (ND) group (n = 10) and high-cholesterol (HCH) group fed with 1.5% cholesterol diet (n = 20). Serum total cholesterol, plaque areas of the ascending aorta, the ratio of intima/media thickness and level of vascular cell adhesion molecule 1 (VCAM-1) mRNA expression of internal pudendal artery were determined after twelve weeks. RESULTS: After twelve weeks, all rabbits of the HCH group got hyperlipemia, 9 of which presented typical atherosclerosis (ATH). The rate of atherosclerosis induced by high-cholesterol diet was 52.9%. Serum total cholesterol levels of the ATH and HCH groups were higher than that of the ND group (P<0.01). The penile erection times and rate in the ATH and HCH groups decreased significantly, compared with the ND group (P<0.01). Both the ratio of intima/media thickness and the level of VCAM-1 mRNA expression of internal pudendal artery in the ATH group were higher than those in the HCH and ND groups (P<0.01). CONCLUSION: It is easy, prectuable and reliable to establish the animal model of atherosclerotic erectile dysfunction induced by high-cholesterol diet. And one of the main causes of atherosclerotic erectile dysfunction is hypercholesterolemia, which through VCAM-1 may induce the structural and functional modifications of the endothelium of the internal pudendal artery and make the corpus cavernosum ischemia.

[Incidental renal cell carcinoma: analysis of 109 cases].

OBJECTIVE: To study the characteristics, diagnosis, treatment and prognosis of incidental renal cell carcinoma(RCC). METHODS: 109 cases of incidental RCC treated in 20 years were analyzed retrospectively and compared with 247 cases of non-incidental RCC. RESULTS: The age, sex and side between incidental RCC and non-incidental RCC were not significant (P > 0.05). Compared to the non-incidental RCC,the diameter of incidental RCC [(4.1 +/- 1.7) cm] was smaller and its stage was lower (P < 0.01). Ultrasonography and CT can improve the detection rate of incidental RCC significantly, and operation is more effective for incidental RCC than for non-incidental RCC (P < 0.01). The 3 and 5 year cancer specific survival rates in patients with incidental RCC were higher than those of non-incidental RCC(P < 0.01). The detection rate of incidental RCC was higher from 1990 to 1999 (39.3%) than from 1980 to 1989 (15.6%) (P < 0.01). CONCLUSIONS: Incidental RCC is not another type of RCC, but a developing stage of RCC without appearance of a symptoms. Ultrasonography and CT are important to diagnose incidental RCC. Low pathological stage, small size, early diagnosis, and radical nephrectomy indicate better prognosis of incidental RCC.

Combinational numeral fingerprint spectra of Glycyrrhiza and analysis of common peak ratio invariableness in HPLC.

To overcome the instability of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM) fingerprint spectra (FPS) and to build up absolute identification standard of TCM, the construction method of combinational numeral fingerprint spectra (CNFPS) was set up. The analysis of invariableness based on CNFPS was carried out. It can be used as absolute quantitative standard to identify the difference of TCM samples. According to this method, the HPLC FPS of components extracted from Glycyrrhiza root samples by ethanol was analyzed. Stable results and accurate quality evaluation were obtained perfectly. The common peak ratio invariableness is an absolute standard in identifying TCM samples, which is better than the similarity method of the FPS.
