Biodegradation of distillery spent wash in anaerobic hybrid reactor.

A lab-scale anaerobic hybrid (combining sludge blanket and filter) reactor was operated in a continuous mode to study anaerobic biodegradation of distillery-spent wash. The study demonstrated that at optimum hydraulic retention time (HRT), 5 days and organic loading rate (OLR), 8.7kgCOD/m(3)d, the COD removal efficiency of the reactor was 79%. The anaerobic reduction of sulfate increases sulfide concentration, which inhibited the metabolism of methanogens and reduced the performance of the reactors. The kinetics of biomass growth i.e. yield coefficient (Y,0.0532) and decay coefficient (K(d), 0.0041d(-1)) was obtained using Lawrence and McCarty model. However, this model failed in determining the kinetics of substrate utilization. Bhatia et al. model having inbuilt provision of process inhibition described the kinetics of substrate utilization, i.e. maximum rate of substrate utilization (R,1.945d(-1)) and inhibition coefficient values (K(i),0.032L/mg). Modeling of the reactor demonstrated that Parkin and Speece, and Bhatia et al. models, both, could be used to predict the effluent substrate concentration. However, Parkin and Speece model predicts effluent COD more precisely (within +/-2%) than Bhatia et al. model (within +/-5-20%) of the experimental value. Karhadkar et al. model predicted biogas yield within +/-5% of the experimental value.

Mathematical modeling of leachates from ash ponds of thermal power plants.

The present study describes the development of empirical models for the prediction of various trace metals i.e., Mn, Cu, Fe, Zn and Pb found in the leachates generated from the ash ponds of various thermal power plants. The dispersion phenomenon of these trace metals followed first order reaction rate kinetics. The empirical models for individual trace metals derived from the lab scale models data correlate well with the real field data with regression coefficients varying from 0.93 to 0.98. The predicted concentrations of the trace metals varied within +/-3% of the observed values in the leachates generated from the ash ponds of four thermal power plants with standard deviation varying from 0.001 to 0.032. The empirical models derived from the study can be applied for prediction of trace metals in leachates generated from similar thermal power plants.

Thermotropic lipid phase transition and the behavior of hydrolytic enzymes in the kidney cortex brush border membrane.

Functional interactions of lipids and proteins were examined in brush-border membranes isolated from the kidney cortex by studying the temperature dependence of the hydrolytic enzyme activities. A close relationship was observed for the membrane proteins and the thermotropic lipid phase transitions. Three lines of evidences were provided for such dependence: a) Arrhenius relationship of the membrane-bound enzyme activities, and the effect of temperature in native and partially delipidated membranes, b) differential scanning calorimetric study of the membrane lipid phase transitions in the native and delipidated membranes, multilamellar vesicles prepared from the membrane extracted lipids, and in vesicles from dimyristoyl phosphatidylcholine, and c) the excimer (dimer)-formation studies of the membrane extrinsic fluorescent probe, pyrene, and the resultant membrane microviscosity. The brush-border membranes were partially delipidated with BuOH and 2,2,2-trifluoroethanol. The functional interactions of the delipidated membranes, which were greatly lost on lipid removal, were largely restored by the addition of exogenous lipids in the reconstitution process, which indicate the critical dependence of the membrane integral proteins on the neighboring lipid molecules in the bulk lipid phase.

An index to measure depreciation in air quality in some coal mining areas of Korba industrial belt of Chhattisgarh, India.

The comparison with National Ambient Air Quality Standards does not always depict a true picture of the Air Quality Status of a study area. As an alternative an index that measures depreciation in Air Quality on more realistic terms has been proposed and applied to the ambient air monitoring data collected from some areas of Korba Coalfields in India. Results have been discussed in detail to illustrate the application of the proposed index and utility in bringing out more realistic air quality assessment.

Multivariate analysis of childhood microbial keratitis in South India.

INTRODUCTION: Corneal infection is the most common cause of profound ocular morbidity leading to blindness worldwide. Corneal infection in children is difficult to diagnose and treat, as they are unwilling and sometimes unable to cooperate during active management. This study analyses the prevalence, microbiology, demography, therapeutic and visual outcome of infectious microbial keratitis in the paediatric age group seen at a tertiary eye care hospital in south India. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective review of all cases presenting with keratitis to the ocular microbiology and cornea service at Aravind Eye Hospital, Coimbatore, from February 1997 to January 2004, was done to screen the patients for microbial keratitis. Their records were further analysed for clinical and microbiological details. Cases with culture-proven non-viral keratitis in children <or=15 years were included in the study. Full ophthalmic examination was performed for all cases. RESULTS: Of the 310 patients who attended the cornea clinic, 97 (31.2%) patients were confirmed to be positive for microbial keratitis. 54.6% of cases were male. The most common predisposing cause of ulceration was trauma (69%) with organic matter. Pure bacterial cultures were obtained from 64 (65.9%) eyes, whereas pure fungal cultures were obtained from 37 (38.1%) eyes. Four (4.1%) eyes showed mixed growth. CONCLUSION: The most commonly isolated organism was Pseudomonas aeruginosa. The most common predisposing cause of infectious microbial keratitis was corneal trauma. Early stage of diagnosis and formulation of an uncompromising management protocol can prevent profound visual morbidity.
