An example of adenoid cystic carcinoma of the cervix was recently encountered in our laboratory and studied by histochemistry, electron microscopy, and immunofluorescence in order to compare the neoplasm with adenoid cystic tumors at other sites and to establish criteria for diagnosis. Histochemically, cervical adenoid cystic carcinoma showed the two types of mucin, epithelial and stromal, as expected in adenoid cystic carcinomas of other organs. Ultrastructurally, this tumor was characterized by redundant basal lamina forming pseudocysts, intercellular spaces, and occasional true lumens with microvilli. Immunofluorescence studies showed that the cells contain at least two antigenically different types of filaments, actin and keratin, and that the cells produce true basement membrane (collagen IV). The presence of actin suggests myoepithelial differentiation even though the tumor probably originated from the cervical reserve cells, and myoepithelium is not a known component of normal cervix. This study shows that cervical adenoid cystic carcinoma is a distinct entity which can be identified and separated from other types of cervical adenocarcinomas.
We report the identification of the human homologue of murine T200 glycoprotein. Peptide-mapping experiments suggest that the structure of the glycoprotein is highly conserved between the two species. Many of the properties of human T200 homologue are similar to those of murine T200 glycoprotein: it is broadly distributed within the hematopoietic system but is not detectable on nonhematopoietic cells; there are also structural differences between the forms of the glycoprotein found on T and B lymphoblastoid cell lines. These results suggest the homologous glycoproteins may play similar functional roles in both species.
Two cases of plexiform tumor of the uterus are presented. Both were incidental microscopic findings in leiomyomatous uteri and had the typical branching cords of small, polygonal cells with scanty cytoplasm and vesicular nuclei. Ultrastructurally the cells had features of smooth muscle differentiation such as actin-like filaments, dense bodies, peripheral dense plaques, pinocytotic vesicles, and incomplete basal lamina. Their close relationship to capillaries resembled the structure of glomus tumor and vascular leiomyoma and suggested histogenetic kinship among these neoplasms.
Laparoscopic tubal sterilization has been rapidly gaining acceptance as a nonpuerperal method of permanent fertility control. A number of problems have nonetheless been associated with this technique. For example, tubal destruction often exceeds that necessary for tubal occlusions, increasing the danger of thermal injuries and possibly such dysfunctional disorders as abnormal uterine bleeding and dysmenorrhea. Furthermore, excessive destruction precludes any possibility of later tubal reconstruction. In an attempt to avoid these problems, a new low-voltage unit with a rechargeable battery was evaluated. With this unit, cautery is provided under laparoscopic view with a spring-activated hook which retracts the fallopian tube into a Teflon shield, where it is coagulated and transected. Histopathologic studies of the healthy fallopian tubes of four women in their reproductive years treated by this method while the abdomen was open prior to an elective hysterectomy demonstrated minimal destruction of the mesosalpinx, with complete tubal occlusion and a coagulated area 10 mm in length. One hundred and sixty-five patients have been sterilized successfully by this method. Indications are that it may provide safe tubal occlusion without unnecessary destruction of the fallopian tubes and surrounding vasculature.

A 57-year-old man underwent a right pneumonectomy for a bronchogenic carcinoma following bronchoscopy and bronchial biopsy. The tumor was a polypoid mass arising from the lower lobe bronchus. Microscopically it was characterized by mononuclear cells mixed with randomly distributed multinucleated giant cells similar to those seen in giant-cell tumor of bone. Also found were portions showing typical squamous cell and spindle cell carcinoma. Based on the light and electron microscopic findings, we suggest that the current case represents a metaplastic squamous carcinoma showing mesenchymal cell differentiation. A hypothesis on the histogenesis of pleomorphic carcinomas was presented. The problems of histological diagnosis generated by such a tumor should be emphasized.
A case of small cell carcinoma of salivary gland was studied by light and electron microscopy. Light microscopy showed sheets of small uniform cells with scanty cytoplasm and pyknotic nuclei. Electron microscopy showed two distinct cell types; an electron-lucent epithelial-appearing cell, and a denser cell with processes containing bundles of filaments and other features suggesting myoepithelial differentiation. Neurosecretory granules were absent. These findings support a salivary duct origin, and are evidence against a neurendocrine derivation for this tumor.
Rabbits immunized with freshly isolated homologous thyroid microsomes in complete Freund's adjuvant developed a severe chronic thyroiditis with the concomitant production of antimicrosomal antibodies. The antibody response was measured by indirect immunofluorescence and complement fixation, employing isolated microsomes as the antigen. Microsomes but not thyroglobulin absorbed out the immunologic activity of the rabbit serum.
