Psychometric evaluation of Breast Health Behavior Questionnaire: Spanish version.

The purpose of the study was to test the psychometric properties of a culturally sensitive and theory-based instrument: the Breast Health Behavior Questionnaire. This instrument was translated into Spanish and back-translated at a third- to fourth-grade reading level. The pilot group consisted of 70 Hispanic women who attended a class at a local church. Subsequent to pilot testing, another 40 Hispanic women who attended a class at the local health department comprised the study sample. The participants responded to the 15-item questionnaire, which is formatted as a Likert scale. Content validity of the Breast Health Behavior Questionnaire was determined by a panel of experts. A factor analysis of this instrument showed five separate dimensions accounting for 71.82% of the instrument's variance. The three major components of self-regulation theory (schema, coping, and appraisal criteria) were found clustered within the first three dimensions after three items were discarded. The Breast Health Behavior Questionnaire demonstrated an internal consistency reliability coefficient of .7172. The psychometric properties of the Spanish version of this questionnaire warrant further research. The instrument may support a better understanding of the Hispanic woman's practice of breast health behavior. Eventually, the Breast Health Behavior Questionnaire may assist nurses in the formulation of culturally grounded interventions.

Improving health promotion for blue-collar workers.

The purpose of the study was to discover factors that may influence blue collared workers' participation in health promotion programs. One hundred sixty blue collared workers age 18 to 65 completed Laffrey's Health Conception Scale (LHCS) and Penders Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP). Results indicated: 1.) Women scored significantly higher on health responsibility and interpersonal support than men; 2.) Older workers scored significantly higher on nutrition, while younger workers scored significantly higher on exercise; 3.) Older workers scored significantly higher on role and self-actualization than younger workers; and 4.) A significant relationship exists between health conception and health promoting life style. Gender, age, and the individual definition of health are important when planning health promotion programs at industrial sites.

Nurse practitioners and physicians: patients' perceived health and satisfaction with care.

The advent of managed care has created changes in the health care environment and nurse practitioners have found a need to evaluate their care. Perceived health and patient satisfaction were measured in a multiethnic sample of 160 clinic patients, ages 18 to 89, in a managed care setting. Results of the Medical Outcomes Study SF-20 and the Nurse Practitioner Satisfaction Instrument indicated no statistically significant difference in perceived health and satisfaction with care, whether the care was given by a nurse practitioner or a primary care physician. The findings warrant further study and may mean that nurse practitioners placed in managed care environments can be expected to perform as effectively as they have in non-managed care environments.

Health conception and health promotion in blue collar workers. Program planning issues.

Health conception and health promotion behaviors were measured in 160 blue collar workers ages 18 to 65, focusing on factors influencing blue collar workers' participation in health promotion programs. Results of Laffrey's Health Conception Scale (LHCS) and Pender's Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile (HPLP) indicated: Health responsibility and interpersonal support were significantly greater for women than for men. Exercise was significantly greater for younger workers than for older workers. Nutrition was significantly greater for older workers than for younger workers. Health conception was significantly greater for younger women and for older men. A significant relationship exists between health conception and health promoting lifestyle. Role and self actualization were significantly greater for older workers than for younger workers. Results suggest gender, age, and concept of health are important when planning health promotion programs at an industrial site.

Developing effective measurement tools: a case study of the Consumer Emergency Care Satisfaction Scale.

Development of valid and reliable instruments to assist nurse researchers and clinicians in meeting the needs of consumers is an avenue toward continuous quality improvement (CQI). This article explains validity and reliability and the process of constructing a valid and reliable scale. The development of the Consumer Emergency Care Satisfaction Scale, a measure of quality nursing care in the emergency department, is used as the example.

Caring for the nurse self: verbal abuse as a case in point.

An assumption that undergirds quality improvement activities is that a practitioner cares for himself or herself. The article describes six caring attributes. The discussion focuses on care of the nurse self with verbal abuse as a case in point. Nurses average five to six incidents of verbal abuse every month. Understanding oneself and implementing certain techniques can help one overcome feelings of powerlessness, incompetence, and decreased self-worth. Self-knowledge and self-change are important aspects of the nurse caring for himself or herself. Quality nursing practice is a positive outcome.

Critical care nurses' lived experiences of caring.

OBJECTIVE: To formulate the fundamental structure of caring as lived by Critical Care Nurses. DESIGN: Colaizzi's phenomenological research method and Diekelmann's dialogue technique were applied. SETTING: The home of each nurse constituted the setting for the interview. The nurses were employed in critical care units in six large metropolitan hospitals in the Southwest. SAMPLE: The availability sample consisted of 15 female critical care registered nurses. The nurses' mean age was 35 years. The mean number of years in critical care nursing was 4.7. One nurse was Asian, one was Hispanic, and 13 were Caucasian. RESULTS: Caring was composed of affective, cognitive, action, and outcome subprocesses. The caring process originated in the nurse's feelings and knowledge, and moved the nurse to competent actions that contributed to patient, family, and nurse outcomes. CONCLUSIONS: Understanding of the process of caring was strengthened by the findings. The decision process used by nurses would benefit from further examination for the presence of the affective and nurse outcome subprocesses.

Four factors of nurse caring in the ICU.

Phenomenological research is conducted to understand the lived experience of persons-patients, families, nurses. This research report describes the feelings of 15 critical care nurses about their experiences of caring. Four major factors (support, role modeling, patient and family interactions, and economic/bureaucratic forces) were identified as crucial aspects of caring in critical care by the nurses. These four factors can be used to increase caring behaviors of nurses in critical care.
