[Permanence of chlamydia in trachomatous tissue].

Electron-microscopic examination of conjunctival and corneal biopsies from six apparently healed trachomatous patients demonstrated chlamydiae in situ. Nine previously trachomatous patients were submitted to the same biopsies; all biopsies were positives. After two months specific anti-chlamydial treatment, we observed the same result before anterior segment surgery. Nevertheless surgery was performed without consequences except for the two corneal grafts which failed. We must ask for two questions: how long chlamydial particles persist in trachomatous tissue? What is the real efficacy of topical anti-chlamydial drugs?

Chlamydia trachomatis

[Astigmatism and corneal incision in cataract surgery. Statistical deductions (author's transl)].

Corneal incision in cataract surgery will produce a large degree of astigmatism greater than that produced in cataracts operated on by the classical methods. The position of the incision and the suture material (nylon) are responsible. The authors have attempted a statistical study of this difference, comparing modern and classical methods, referring for the latter to previous work.

Astigmatism

[Influence of surgical technic in cataract operation. (Postoperative astigmatism, type of iridectomy)].

The authors have made a statistical study of the influence of surgical technique on the anatomical (astigmatism) and functional results in cataract surgery. They have taken into consideration whether the incision is made under a conjunctival flap or not, with a keratome or Gillette blade, with a sector or peripheral iridectomy. Their conclusions are that when performed by the same surgeon the different surgical techniques do not give rise to significant variations in astigmatism or in the eventual functional result.

Aged

[Which mast cell inhibition is to be used in ophthalmology?].

Correct treatment of allergic conjunctivitis cannot be achieved bay simple classification into two categories, i.E. as perennial or seasonal conjunctivitis. It is important to distinguish the different forms, each of which have a different pathogenicity and a different treatment. Opticron is the reference product. All others drugs must be evaluated by randomized double-masked studies.
