[A newer position-independent perfusable drop counter. Function principle, technical variations, calculation bases and use possibilities].

The principles of construction and the basis for calculation of a dropper for infusion apparatuses, functioning independently of its position, are explained and exemplified. By means of suitable shaping and exact calculation the volume of the device can be reduced to a quarter of the volume of a spherical device of corresponding function. A preferred possibility of application consists in combining the device with a flexible container and an artificial pressure device.

[A simple safe system for intra-arterial infusion by pressure-constant cuff compression of the infusion bag with the help of a reducing valve].

We describe a simple and cheap system of intraarterial infusion. It consists exclusively of single parts which are available on the market. A source of pressure is connected with a modified pressure-reduction valve which produces a constant pressure in an attached pressure cuff, respectively in an enclosed infusion-bag, so that a constant flow rate of the infusion is maintained. First clinical experiences with more than hundred angiological patients have shown that this new system has many advantages. In our routine work we had neither functional disturbances nor other complications.

[Tumour of the ovary after hysterectomy (author's transl)].

Between 1962 and 1973 vaginal or abdominal hysterectomies were done in 1811 women at the University women clinic Tübingen. In all cases the adnexa were preserved. Malignancies of the uterus were not present in these cases. Until 1978 41 patients were reoperated because of ovarian tumours. They developed 5 to 130 months after hysterectomy. Benign or even praemalignant lesions of the uterus did not have an influence on the frequency of later development of an ovarian tumor. The frequency of a second laparotomy was significantly higher in cases with a myoma of the uterus when compared with other histological changes of the uterus (p < 0,05). After vaginal hysterectomy ovarian tumours occurred less frequently. Among 41 reoperated cases four ovarian carcinomas were found: a frequency of 0,22%. Based upon the data of these investigations no recommendation can be given regarding the age limit for ovariectomy at the time of hysterectomy for prophylaxis of ovarian cancer.

[Collision injuries on ski slopes (author's transl)].

A prospective study was carried out on ski accidents caused by collisions on ski slopes. The article defines the term "ski collision" and then reviews the authors' case histories of the last three years, taking the location and time of accident, the type of collision and injury into consideration. The authors have been able to prove that the collision type of injury differs from "normal" ski injury. The most striking difference in these injuries was found to be the increase in the frequency of visceral cranium trauma. The second difference concerns the incidence of thoracoabdominal injuries. The authors have attempted to point out a few prophylactic measures. A brief discussion deals with problems involving "slope regulations". Finally, the authors urgently recommend, in view of the risk of fatal injuries in collision accidents, to ensure quickest possible and careful transportation of accident victims to a versatile and well-equipped hospital.

[Studies on the success of insemination after various insemination dates in biotechnical puberty induction of young sows].

Different frequencies and periods of insemination were checked with the view to optimising puberty induction to young sows, for which purpose 500 IU PMS/250 IU HCG were injected to 571 animals in seven experiments. Insemination was carried out by deadline, since follicle stimulation was exhibited by almost all animals following the above treatment, while only some of them displayed tolerance. Advantage was taken of the induced oestrus, since its ovulation rates were higher than those associated with subsequent heat cycles, and because a synchronised second oestrus was recordable only from some of those animals which exhibited follicle stimulation in response to puberty induction. The most favourable results in terms of pregnancy and number of embryoes, against the background of the great variability in ovulation onset, were obtained, if insemination was applied 72, 96, and 120 hours after gonadotrophin treatment. From among the variants with two inseminations, good results were obtained from those 96 and 120 hours after PMS/HCG treatment.

[Studies on various dosages of PMS and HCG in biotechnical puberty induction in young sows].

The PMS and HCG doses by which to induce puberty and successfully use the first induced oestrus were tested in three experimental slaughter series on 197 prepuberal young sows. An injection of 500 International Units of PMS and 250 IU of HCG was found to bear greatest promise. While higher dosages gave higher rates of ovulation and, following insemination, higher numbers of embryos, pregnancy rates as a whole dropped severely. Since a very high percentage of all animals involved exhibited follicle stimulation, following such treatment, while only half of them displayed tolerance, it is strongly suggested to use for all animals deadline-oriented rather than toleranceoriented insemination.

[The course of ovulation after biotechnical puberty induction in young sows].

Four experimental series were applied to 342 prepuberal young sows to establish ovulation developments. Different periods of time were allowed to elapse between injection and slaughter. Injected were 400 IU PMS/200 IU HCG or 500 IU PMS/250 IU HCG. Onsets of ovulation were found to be highly differentiated and variable. Some of the animals had completed ovulation 72 hours after application of gonadotrophin, whereas in others had not even started 168 hours after such application. In the majority of all sows involved in the experiments ovulation occurred 96--144 hours from application of the gonadotrophis hormone. In other words, fertile semen should be present in the genital tract of sows in that period of time, if the concept of deadlineoriented insemination is followed.

[New system for no-wait continuous infusion of several different solutions using an additional apparatus].

This article introduces a simple coordination system for two or more infusion liquids. Solutions drip down one after the other in a continuous flow, with no attendance required, two or more infusion containers being connected in a way described below. There is no intermingling of solutions when using non-rigid containers, and only a slight one when using glass or plastic material. The check valves work through the pressure exerted by the columns of liquid, the containers being placed on different levels. The essential advantages are: less discomfort and less danger for patients and staff. The system can be used for a washing drainage.

A new infusion apparatus for emergency medical care: a technical note.

In order to facilitate infusion therapy during rescue and transport of emergency patients a new disposable infusion apparatus has been developed. This device is composed of a specially constructed stactometer and a double rolling clamp and is suitable for both gravitational and pressure infusion. In the latter case, and infusion stand is no longer necessary and the stactometer can be used in any position as well as shaken without danger of air embolism. Clinical tests on over 50 patients have been successful and have confirmed the apparatus' simplicity and safety of use - a major criterion for emergency medical care.
