[Acute generalized retinal periphlebitis (author's transl)].

Report on a 28-year-old man with acute impairment of vision (blurring) who was subsequently found to have extensive bilateral retinal edema with hemorrhages at posterior pole. A striking feature was the periphlebitic sheathing in this area. After systemic corticosteroid application visual acuity improved rapidly as the exudations regressed. Apart from the finding of circulating immunocomplexes non of the serological tests showed any pathologic changes. It is reasonable to assume that the appearance of the acute generalized periphlebitis was related to a past or still active viral process.

[Influence of glycosaminoglycan synthesis of cultured cornea stroma cells by variation of culture condition].

Cultured cells derived from bovine corneal stroma synthesize all types of sulfated glycosaminoglycans and distribute these macromolecules into topographically different compartments in a reproducible manner. Each compartment is characterized by a typical glycosaminoglycan distribution pattern. Corneal fibroblasts synthesize in vitro only small amounts of keratan sulfate in contrast to the in vivo conditions. We have, therefore, investigated the synthesis and topographical distribution of sulfated glycosaminoglycans as influenced by different culture conditions. The following results were obtained: 1) Cocultivation of epithelial and stromal fibroblasts from bovine cornea led to an increased incorporation of radiosulfate into sulfated glycosaminoglycans by about 50% as compared to the theoretical value. Glycosaminoglycan distribution of mixed cultures into different compartments showed no similarity compared with pure epithelial or stromal fibroblasts. 2) Addition of native or heat inactivated anterior chamber fluid to the culture medium was followed by a twofold increase of [35S]-sulfate incorporation and by an augmented intracellular and pericellular accumulation of labeled macromolecules. 3) Reduction of the incubation temperature led to a reduced synthesis of glycosaminoglycans without influencing their topographical distribution. Growth of stromal cells on type I collagen was accompanied by a reduced glycosaminoglycan synthesis of about 25%. Extracellular macromolecules reached only half of the normal value, while intracellularly their concentration was slightly increased. 4) None of the variations of the culture condition led to a significant change of the distribution pattern of sulfated glycosaminoglycans. Especially, no significant increase of keratan sulfate biosynthesis could be detected.

[Aqueous-and serum levels of cephalexin and penicillin V after oral application in man (author's transl)].

This clinical study implies orally administered cephalexin and penicillin V as agents with effective aqueous homor penetration in noninfected human eyes. Aqueous humor concentration of cephalexin increases up to 15% of the serum level 2 h after application. Administration of 1 g or 2 g cephalexin revealed no significant difference in aqueous humor concentration. So penetration of blood-aqueous-humor barrier can be regarded as a saturation process. Individual results of 92 cephalexin determinations are variant and not related to body weight or age of the patients.

[A check method for controlling the radiophosphorus-counting system (author's transl)].

Handle probe and counting system for radiophosphorus test can be checked by the use of a 64 nCi Strontium-90 radiator established inside a plexiglas cylinder. Counting system adjustment to 40 dB amplifier and 0.70 discriminator resulted in 1710cpm+/-2% standard deviation. This check method is suitable for controlling the counting system before tumor measurement. Advantages of this test method are low expenses, stability of the radionuclide, and riskless use of beta-radiator.

[Observations on cataract incision dehiscence (author's transl)].

24 patients with rupturing corneal incisions were observed within 6 years from 1971 until 1976. 19 patients had already had cataract extractions performed by us. This complication occurred in 0.5% of cases. All ruptures were investigated regarding the period of time after the cataract extraction, and possible precipitating factors. 10X0 atraumatic nylon sutures were shown to be unsuitable for adaptation of corneal edges.

[Dichlorphenamide treatment in acute glaucoma (author's transl)].

Dichlorphenamide as well as Diamox lowers intraocular pressure. For adequate treatment of acute glaucoma only 20% of commonly used Diamoxdosis is requested to reach comparable pressure release two hours later. After one hour control intraocular pressure of 60% from patients with Dichlorphenamide treatment was found below 40 mm Hg since in Diamoxgroup there were only 30% below 40 mm Hg. Different effects of Dichlorphenamide and Diamox after one hour use is demonstrated in respect of serum electrolytes and base excess as well. Essential side effects after a single dosis of 200 mg Dichlorphenamide or in combination with Diamox for acute glaucoma treatment could not be observed.

The content of glycosaminoglycans in bovine corneal epithelium and precorneal fluid-film.

Histologic staining of hen cornea and precorneal fluid-film with ruthenium red lead to the assumption of existent coating glycosaminoglycans. Quantitative and chemical analytical examinations of bovine corneal epithelium with and without the fluid-film could not demonstrate the characteristic components of glycosaminoglycans. Even small amounts of glycosaminoglycans are not found after incubation of the cornea with radioactive precursors. But the extracted material have been proved by degradation with amyloglucosidase enzyme for pure glycogen. Most probably ruthenium red stains glycosaminoglycans nonspecifically but marks the glycoproteins as well which have been demonstrated in the precorneal fluid-film.

[Computer tomography of the eye and the orbit (author's transl)].

Princips of computer tomography is demonstrated and the absorption coefficients of ocular and orbital tissue are calculated. The advantages and disadvantages of this procedure are discussed. 39 patients with ocular and orbital diseases were examined by computer tomography. The main indication was tumors, including metastases and diseases arising from ethmoidal cells. Vascular anomalies and tumors were better demonstrated by angiography. Dislocated lens, enlarged tumors of the choroid and prostheses (cerclage and orbital implants) are demonstrable. In contrast to echography, the computer tomography gives certainly better results in the posterior part of the orbit. Technical improvement of the apparatus could lead to a wider use in ophthalmology.

[Inhibition of corneal metabolism by glucocorticosteroids. An in vitro study (author's transl)]?14Hemmung des Hornhautstoffwechals durch Glukocorticosteroide. Eine in vitro Studie.

Cortisone and its derivates demonstrates influence to the metabolism of connective tissue. In this in vitro-study the action of water soluble Dexamethason (Schering) to corneal tissue is quantitatively determined. Incorporation of radioactive sulfate into the glycosaminoglycanes and the sulfate-hexosamine-quotient of keratansulfate and chondroitinsulfate is pointed out. 1. A 2 times 10-7 M Dexamethason-concentration and 6 hours incubation time causes reducing of sulfate incorporation in the case of keratansulfate (I) about 94 per cent and chondroitinsulfate (II) about 89 percent compared to nontreated control. Increasing concentration of Dexamethason leads the inhibition of sulfate incorporation to 66 per cent (I) and 63 per cent (II) respectively. Removing the epithelium from the stroma before incubation the Dexamethason concentration and 6 h incubation time only 84 percent and 80 per cent radioactive sulfate is found in keratansulfate and chondroitinsulfate. An increasing Dexamethason concentration leads to inhibition of 55 per cent (I) and 46 per cent (II) respectively. 2. A comparable inhibition of sulfate incorporation is demonstrated with constant Dexamethason concentration and variable duration of incubation. A 1 hour incubation reduced incorporation of sulfate to 89 per cent for keratansulfate and 81 per cent for chondroitinsulfate. The 24 hours incubation inhibits incorporation to 69 per cent (I) and 65 per cent (II) respectively.

[Long-term observation of a case with chorioiditis striata (author's transl)].

Peripapillary choroidal and retinal atrophy with tongue like extensions to the periphery are typical features of striate chorioiditis. They appear bilateraly in middle-aged persons and are of progressive course. A report on examination findings is made in a case with 20-year-old history. An abiotrophical process in the choroidea is discussed as cause of this disease.

Behavioral discrimination of water motions caused by moving objects.

We tested whether goldfish, Carassius auratus, discriminate hydrodynamic stimuli caused by moving objects. Blindfolded goldfish responded to a passing object with changes in inter-gill-movement intervals. To learn whether goldfish can discriminate water motions caused by different moving objects we habituated them to a certain object stimulus. If the stimulus was altered, e.g., by altering speed, direction of motion, or size or shape of the object, fish again showed a temporary suspension of breathing when the object passed by. If animals failed to respond to an altered stimulus, we paired this stimulus with a weak electric shock during training. Goldfish discriminated object motion direction. In addition, in two choice experiments goldfish discriminated water motions caused by objects which moved with different speeds (e.g., 5 cm s(-1) versus 6 cm s(-1)), or by objects which differed in size (e.g., 1 cm x 1 cm versus 1.4 cm x 1.4 cm cross section), or shape (e.g., a round versus a triangular object). If object size and/or shape was varied quasi-randomly such that the faster moving object not always caused the greatest water velocities, fish still discriminated object speed.
