Epidemiology of nasopharyngeal carriage of Neisseria meningitidis in healthy Dutch children.

We investigated the prevalence and determinants of nasopharyngeal carriage of Neisseria meningitidis in 3200 healthy children aged 1-19 years. The incidence of meningococcal carriage was, on average, 1.5%. Peak incidences were seen at age 1 year and after age 15 years. The independent determinants of meningococcal carriage included age, regular visits to youth clubs (odds ratio [OR], 2.2) and discotheques (OR, 4.3), and pneumococcal carriage (OR, 4.1).

Heterogeneity among infecting strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa in diverse departments of a large Tunisian hospital.

Clinical isolates of Pseudomonas aeruginosa were obtained during a half-year screening period of five different wards of the La Rabta Hospital (Tunis). Distinct clinical isolates (N= 82) were obtained from patients, 40 (48%) of which originated from the Department of Otolaryngology. In order to define the local epidemiology of this opportunistic organism, all strains were serotyped, analysed for pyocin production and genetically characterized with the help of pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE). The data show that, despite the frequent occurrence of identical serotypes, most of the isolates represent unique pyocin types (N= 53) and genotypes (N= 64). A combination of the pyocin and PFGE data showed that nearly all strains were of unique types, except for two pairs of strains. A limited number of strain clusters was observed on the basis of DNA typing data alone. This involved eight genotypes, some of which were clustered with respect to clinical environment or time. Genotype 22 occurred most frequently (6/83, 7%) and independently of time and locale, indicating that it may represent either a clonal type constituting a major fraction of all P. aeruginosa isolates in the region or a more prevalent organism. Despite a relatively high incidence of P. aeruginosa infections, the polyclonality of these strains shows that, in La Rabta Hospital, pseudomonal infections are not primarily due to excessive spread of a single bacterial genotype.

An epidemiological study on the occurrence of Staphylococcus aureus in superficial abscesses of patients presenting for surgery in a teaching hospital in Khartoum, Sudan.

A group of patients (n=86) suffering from superficial abscesses was recruited in the Khartoum Teaching Hospital, Sudan. Detailed clinical and socio-economic data were collected. It appeared that 83% of all patients were younger than 40. Labourers were most prevalent (28%), followed by students (23%) and housewives (16%). The head and neck were most often affected (22%), with hands being second (19%). In 92% of all pus cultures a microbial agents was identified, the large majority being Staphylococcus aureus (69%). Among patients, 47% were nasal carriers of S. aureus, similar to the carriage rate measured among controls, suggesting that nasal carriage is no risk factor for abscess development. Multivariate logistic regression analysis revealed that a history of abscess, recent traditional medical treatment, poor hygiene and low socio-economic status were significantly and independently associated with the occurrence of superficial abscesses.

Habit-reversal treatment for children's stuttering: assessment in three settings.

Two boys (9 and 14 years old) participated in an evaluation of treatment for stuttering. Habit reversal procedures (awareness training, regulated breathing, and social support) were combined with teaching positive attitudes to parents. During treatment, stuttering frequencies decreased, speech rates increased, and speech naturalness ratings increased. These changes occurred in the clinic, the child's home, and the child's school. After treatment, stuttering remained low in the clinic and at home, but increased stuttering was found at school.

Teaching students with mental retardation and other disabilities to make simple drawings through a computer system and special cards.

3 students with mental retardation and other disabilities were trained to make simple drawings on a computer screen (with a light-pen) following the color sequence used for the same drawings on special cards. The screen provided immediate feedback on the students' drawing accuracy. Teachers rated the students' posttraining drawings much higher than the pretraining ones.

Soybean lipoxygenase-1 is not a quinoprotein.

Soybean lipoxygenase-1 was reinvestigated with respect to its quinoprotein nature. It has been reported previously that soybean lipoxygenase-1 contains pyrroloquinoline quinone as the organic cofactor. Because spectroscopic data were found to be inconsistent with the evidence presented in [1], we sought to reproduce the published data by carefully following the procedures described in [1] and supplementing them with new analytical results. The combined data lead us to conclude that soybean lipoxygenase-1 is not a quinoprotein.

An analysis of emergent simple discrimination in children.

In Experiment 1 eight five-year-old children received an arbitrary matching-to-sample task with sample stimuli A1 and A2 and comparison stimuli B1 and B2. This task was mixed with a simple, two-choice discrimination task with stimuli A1 and A2. In subsequent tests with B1 and B2 presented alone, the number of responses to B1 was greater when it had been paired with the correct stimulus of the simple discrimination task than when it had been paired with the incorrect stimulus. In Experiment 2 incorrect comparisons were omitted during the matching-to-sample task. Eight children were taught to point to either A1 or A2 first, and to either B1 or B2 second. Eight other children were taught to point to either B1 or B2 first, and to either A1 or A2 second. The effect of Experiment 1 was replicated with the first but not with the second group. The results of both experiments suggest that the functions of S+ and S- in a simple discrimination task can transfer to test stimuli if the training stimuli precede the test stimuli during paired presentations.

Leukotriene C4 production by normal-density and low-density eosinophils of atopic individuals and other patients with eosinophilia.

With the use of a percoll gradient separation procedure, eosinophils of individuals with asthma and with allergy could be separated into normal- and low-density cell fractions. The presence of low-density eosinophils possibly reflects an ongoing process of activation of these cells induced by the allergic reaction. Ca-ionophore-induced leukotriene (LT) C4 production, in the absence of added substrates, demonstrated a decreased potency for LT generation by low-density eosinophils compared with the LT generation of normal-density cells (57 +/- 33 ng and 103 +/- 44 ng per 10(6) cells, respectively). In contrast with the Ca-ionophore-induced LT formation, incubations with serum-treated zymosan in the presence of glutathione demonstrated higher productions of LTC4 with the low-density eosinophilic subpopulation compared with normal-density cells. This is compatible with a possibly higher expression of complement C3b receptors on the low-density eosinophils. Total arylsulfatase contents demonstrated that low-density eosinophils are not degranulated with respect to their small granules. Although release of the large granules by low-density eosinophils cannot be excluded, electron-microscopy studies indicated that degranulation is not the only (or major) factor that determines the density of the various eosinophilic subpopulations.

Melloration and maximization of reinforcement minus costs of behavior.

Eight pigeons were exposed to independent concurrent schedules. Concurrent variable-interval 60-second variable-interval 60-second schedules were presented to one group of four subjects. Following baseline training, a limited hold was added to one of the schedules and the duration of the hold was decreased in successive conditions. Concurrent variable-interval 120-second variable-interval 40-second schedules were presented to another group of four subjects. These subjects were first exposed to decreasing durations of a limited hold in the variable-interval 40-second component. After replication of the baseline, a limited hold in the variable-interval 120-second component was decreased in duration. The initial durations of the holds were determined from the subjects' responding in the baseline conditions. A duration was chosen such that approximately 25% of the scheduled reinforcers would be canceled if responding remained unchanged.Approximate matching of time proportions and reinforcement proportions was observed when the limited hold was added to the variable-interval 60-second schedule and when the limited hold was added to the variable-interval 40-second schedule. Time proportions were less extreme than reinforcement proportions when the limited hold operated in a variable-interval 120-second schedule. Overall reinforcement rates tended to decrease with continued training in concurrent schedules with a limited hold. Absolute deviations from time matching also decreased. The results provide evidence against the principle of reinforcement maximization, and support Herrnstein and Vaughan's (1980) melioration hypothesis.

Concurrent schedules: Spatial separation of response alternatives.

Four pigeons were exposed to independent concurrent variable-interval 20-second variable-interval 60-second schedules of reinforcement. A transparent partition was inserted midway between the two response keys. The length of the partition was systematically manipulated. Increasing partition length produced a decrease in changeover rate in Experiment 1. Over-matching was observed with a partition length of 20 centimeters. In Experiment 2 a four-second limited hold was added to the schedules. Increasing partition length produced a decrease in changeover rate that exceeded the decrease observed in Experiment 1. This manipulation produced nearly exclusive choice of the variable-interval 20-second component. The present results, together with results obtained in related research, suggest that deviation from matching is a function of procedural variables that determine the consequences of a changeover response.
