[Morphometric studies of radiographic pictures of lumbar vertebrae of healthy Boxers and Boxers with spondylosis].

Length and height measurement of the third lumbar vertebra in 286 radiographs of 140 male and 146 female Boxers was carried out to defect differences between dogs with and dogs without spondylosis. No differences could be established. However, there were statistically significant differences in the length of the vertebra between male and female dogs within the age groups (below two years and above 5 years) and between bitches younger than two years and bitches older than 5 years. Length-height-proportions did not change. Female Boxers were more often affected with spondylosis than males.

Fenoterol depot and fenoterol in premature uterine contractions--a multicentric double-blind comparative study.

In a double-blind randomized study, the effect of a single dose of a fenoterol preparation with delayed release of active substance (designated as fenoterol depot) was compared with a fenoterol product with undelayed release of active substance (designated as fenoterol) in two groups respectively comprising 66 and 65 female patients with premature uterine contractions. The fenoterol depot was administered p.o. in a single total dose of 21 mg at the beginning of an investigation period of 360 minutes and the fenoterol was administered p.o. within 235 minutes in three identical consecutive doses resulting in a total dose of 22.5 mg. The increased uterine activity present at the beginning was markedly lowered by an initial intravenous infusion of Partusisten. After administration of the two oral preparations, the uterine contractions remained at the low level achieved. The fenoterol depot was slightly superior to fenoterol with regard to the reduction of the duration of contractions: the difference in the inhibition of the duration of the contraction between the two preparations was a maximum of 25.7% in favor of fenoterol depot. The frequency of uterine contraction was substantially reduced by both preparations, but to a greater extent by the depot form. The tocolytic efficacy and the tolerance were rated as "good" in 70% and 75% respectively with fenoterol depot and in 69% and in 71% respectively in the case of fenoterol. The maternal pulse rate remained at the level reached at the end of Partusisten infusion with the two preparation, and the blood pressure fluctuated slightly within the normal range.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

[Bullous pemphigoid in childhood].

Bullous pemphigoid is a rather rare disease in childhood. A case report is given about a seven-year-old girl suffering from juvenile bullous pemphigoid and the differential diagnosis is discussed with regard to the other bullous diseases in children. Some clues were noted in the case history of our patient concerning an effective treatment using erythromycin in bullous pemphigoid. A short summary is presented about the theoretical basis with respect to this therapeutical procedure.

[Investigations on the retention period and tolerance of Hexabrix as x-ray contrast medium in arthrography (author's transl)].

Arthrography of the knee joint was performed in 12 domestic pigs using Hexabrix (meglumine and sodium ioxaglate). Conray EV (sodium and meglumine iothalamate) was used for comparison. X-ray films were taken at periodic intervals. Hexabrix was found to stay slightly longer in the joints. The animals were sacrificed at 3 different times after injection and the synovial membrane of the knee joints and the joint cartilage of the patella were assessed histologically. 3 of 6 joints showed a strictly limited focus with leukocytes in the fat pad 24 hours after the injection. In the other cases no inflammatory reactions were seen after injection of the contrast media.

[The life-history of Sarcocystis singaporensis Zaman and Colley, 1976 in the definitive and intermediate host (author's transl)].

Sporulated oocysts and sporocysts (9.3 x 7.3 micrometer) of Sarcocystis singaporensis - isolated from freshly imported snakes (Python reticulatus) - were fed to various animals to test their function as suitable intermediate hosts (NMRI-mice, albino rats, Meriones unguiculatus, golden hamsters, guinea pigs, Mastomys natalensis, field-voles [Microtus arvalis], pigeons, and chickens). Only in rats were muscle-cysts formed. The optimal dose was 150 sporocysts per rat. Two generations of merogony could be observed, the first about the 6th day, the second about the 16th day post infection. In the skeletal muscles metrocytes were seen in the young cysts initially, and from the 40th day post infection cystozoites were present. The full grown muscle-cysts measured 1226 x 184 micrometer. They were chambered and possessed a 9.6 micrometer broad stable bristle layer. Older cysts (100 days post infection and more) had shorter processes. To demonstrate the complete life-cycle we fed cyst-containing rat muscles to four reticulated pythons. On the 8th and 13th post infection the feces for 73 to 117 days. Histologic examination of surgically removed parts of the midgut showed that gamogony and sporogony take place in the duodenum and the anterior third of the midgut. Oocysts with sporoblasts were first seen on the 4th day post infection.

[Intraorbital extrabulbar gunshot wounds].

Report on two similar cases of intraorbital, extrabulbar injuries caused by lead bullets. Indication, risk, and final success of treatment after early surgery to remove the foreign bodies are discussed with reference to the literature.

Adult

[Diagnosis of trichinellosis and special aspects of a modified immunofluorescence test (author's transl)].

Trichinella spiralis was detected in 1835 by Paget, an English student. Since the introduction of the meat investigation law for trichinosis in 1937 the infection with this parasites became a rare condition. The last endemies in Germany occurred in 1967 and 1977. They restimulated the discussion regarding the efficiency and sensitivity of the routinely used methods for the detection of Tr. spiralis. 69 patients, suffering from infection with Tr. spiralis were investigated using a modified IFT. This method was compared with other serological techniques for the determination of Tr. spiralis and was found very sensitive and specific. Further immunological investigations showed an increased lymphocyte stimulation with Trich. antigen in most patients suffering from trichinellosis. When added autologous serum however the proliferation of lymphocytes was inhibited. The reason for this phenomenon might be a factor with immunosuppressive property produced by the adult worms.

Contraceptive efficacy determination by postcoital testing.

A new vaginal contraceptive method that offers the ease of use with none of the potentially harmful physiologic effects of hormonal contraception was subjected to direct in vivo tests of its efficacy in immobilizing spermatozoa and preventing their entry into the cervical canal. The new contraceptive, a small avoid only 2.8 cm long and 1.4 cm wide, is easily inserted into the vagina without the need for special applicators. It offers protection through the delivery of a highly effective spermicide by the effervescent formation of foam that disperses over the uterine opening. In the trials, no motile spermatozoa could be found in any samples obtained from the vagina, the os externum, or the cervical canal immediately after intercouse protected with the new agent. In no case were any sperm, even immotile sperm, observed in the cervical canal. By contrast, examination of 30 samples obtained immediately after coitus protected with another contraceptive agent (used as a control) revealed motile spermatozao in the cervical canal in nine cases, and propulsive motility was seen on five occasions. The new contraceptive proved highly effective in preventing conception.
