A new amperometric enzyme electrode for alcohol determination.

A new enzyme electrode for the determination of alcohols was developed by immobilizing alcohol oxidase in polvinylferrocenium matrix coated on a Pt electrode surface. The amperometric response due to the electrooxidation of enzymatically generated H(2)O(2) was measured at a constant potential of +0.70 V versus SCE. The effects of substrate, buffer and enzyme concentrations, pH and temperature on the response of the electrode were investigated. The optimum pH was found to be pH 8.0 at 30 degrees C. The steady-state current of this enzyme electrode was reproducible within +/-5.0% of the relative error. The sensitivity of the enzyme electrode decreased in the following order: methanol>ethanol>n-butanol>benzyl alcohol. The linear response was observed up to 3.7 mM for methanol, 3.0 mM for ethanol, 6.2 mM for n-butanol, and 5.2 mM for benzyl alcohol. The apparent Michaelis-Menten constant (K(Mapp)) value and the activation energy, E(a), of this immobilized enzyme system were found to be 5.78 mM and 38.07 kJ/mol for methanol, respectively.

The effect of Allium sp. on the extension of lipolysis and proteolysis in Van herby cheese during maturation.

The aim of this study was to determine the effect of herb (Allium sp.) on biochemical changes of herby cheese produced in Turkey. Raw cows' milk was used for cheese manufacture. Five groups of cheeses, containing 0 (as control), 0.5, 1, 2, and 3% herb, were produced and coded as K, A, B, C, and D respectively. All cheese groups were ripened at 8 degrees C for 90 days. Samples were taken from cheeses after 3, 15, 30, 60 and 90 days, and analysed for lipolysis (as acid degree value) and proteolysis (water-soluble nitrogen, TCA-soluble nitrogen, and PTA-soluble nitrogen). It was found that lipolysis in herby cheeses increased with increasing herb addition, and the increase in lipolysis degree was significant (P < 0.05) in cheese D. Water-soluble N, TCA-soluble N, and PTA-soluble N as indicator of proteolysis degrees were affected significantly (P < 0.05) by increasing herb ratios.

Allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation for standard risk leukemia: experience of Ibni Sina Hospital.

Fifty-three patients with standard risk leukemia who underwent allogeneic peripheral blood stem cell transplantation (alloPBSCT) from their HLA-identical siblings were analyzed for engraftment, incidence and severity of GVHD, and relapse rate. Standard risk leukemia was defined as AML in first complete remission or CML in first chronic phase within the first year after diagnosis. The median age was 34.5 years (range 13-47). Stem cells were mobilized by using 10 microg/kg G-CSF subcutaneously for 5 days. A median of 5. 7 (2.1-21.4) x 106/kg CD34+ cells was collected over a median of 2 (range 1-5) apheresis procedures. Cyclosporin A (CsA) plus short-course MTX were used for GVHD prophylaxis. Recovery to granulocytes >0.5 x 109/l and platelets >20 x 109/l occurred at a median of day +13 (range 8-32) and +13 (range 8-51), respectively. Day +100 transplant-related mortality was 13.2% (7/53). Acute GVHD occurred in 20 of 49 (41%) evaluable patients and only six (12.3%) of them had severe disease (grade III-IV). Chronic GVHD occurred in 30 of 42 (71.4%) evaluable patients. Relapse rate at 2 years was 7. 5%. The median overall and leukemia-free survivals were 22 (4-44) and 20 (3-44) months, respectively. Estimated 4 year leukemia-free and overall survival rates were 60% and 62%, respectively. In conclusion, alloPBSCT in standard risk leukemia seems to be associated with a low relapse rate and no increased risk of acute GVHD, but there is a trend for higher incidence of cGVHD. Quantitative analysis of the drainage after neck dissection.

The goals of this study are to determine the normal volume and lipid values of the drainage after neck dissection (ND) and to evaluate the changes of these values according to the type and side of the ND. Ninety-seven uncomplicated NDs involving zones I through IV were evaluated prospectively in this study. The most important result of the analysis of the drainage is that levels of triglyceride and cholesterol in the drainage were lower than serum levels in all but 1 case (P< 0.001). When matched for the type and side of the dissection, only mean total drainage volume was significantly higher in radical NDs than in selective NDs (P = 0.001). The normal volume and lipid values of neck drainage are reported in this study. Being aware of the changes in these values may help early diagnosis of some pathologic conditions.

Peripheral aneurysms in Behçet's disease.

In this report, 14 patients with Behçet's disease with a total of 16 aneurysms are presented. The most common site of aneurysm formation was the femoral artery. Patients with Behçet's disease and aneurysm formation carry the highest morbidity and mortality rates among all those with the disease. The results of reconstructive surgery in the treatment of aneurysms are discouraging, with many anastomotic aneurysms and grafts occluding. In this study, it was possible to ligate major arteries such as the common iliac, superficial femoral and popliteal without limb loss. It is suggested that ligature either at initial surgery or reoperation should be performed to avoid complications of reconstructive surgery. Adjuvant immunotherapy is required to control relapses responsible for new aneurysm formation.
