[Analysis of the association between HLA-DRB(1), DQB(1) gene and pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with diabetes mellitus].

OBJECTIVE: To analyze the association between HLA DRB(1), DQB(1) allele and pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with type 2 diabetes mellitus among Han nationality of northern Chinese. METHODS: By using PCR-SSP technique, the genomic DNA typing was applied to compare the difference of the gene frequency between patients and normal controls. The relative risks (RR) of the disease were also estimated. 214 cases were observed, including 123 pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, 45 type 2 diabetes mellitus, and 46 normal subjects. All these cases were respectively hospitalized in Beijing Thoracic Tumor & Tuberculosis Hospital, Tianjin Lung Disease Hospital, Beijing Thoracic Disease Hospital, Shijiazhuang Diabetes Hospital, from 1998 to 1999. RESULTS: The frequency of DRB(1) * 09 allele in pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with type 2 diabetes mellitus cases was significantly higher than that of DRB(1) * 09 allele in normal controls, 25.10% Vs 14.03%, RR = 2.22, the frequency of DRB(1) * 09 allele in cases was also significantly higher than that of DRB(1) * 09 allele in type 2 diabetes mellitus controls, 25.1% Vs 9.32%, RR = 3.16; the frequency of DQB(1) * 05 allele was significantly lower than that of DQB(1) * 05 allele in normal controls and diabetes mellitus, 7.17% Vs 19.24%, RR = 0.30, 7.17% Vs 21.12%, RR = 0.26. CONCLUSIONS: The results indicate that the DRB(1) * 09 allele is susceptive to the pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, the DQB(1) * 05 may be protective to the pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with diabetes mellitus. The DRB(1) * 09 allele and DQB(1) * 05 allele may affect the incidence of the pulmonary tuberculosis complicated with type 2 diabetes mellitus, or real effect genes link with them.

Retrospective analysis of the Beijing family of Mycobacterium tuberculosis in preserved lung tissues.

Direct repeat spoligotyping of 85 paraffin-embedded lung biopsies was used to investigated the occurrence around Beijing of the Beijing family of Mycobacterium tuberculosis. Samples ranged in time from 1956 to 1990. Hybridization patterns were found with 49 (58%) samples, and 45 (92%) produced typical Beijing family patterns extending over the 34-year period.

[Study on epidemic of drug-resistant tuberculosis in Shandong province, China].

OBJECTIVE: To establish the surveillance system for drug resistance of tuberculosis according to WHO and IUATLD guidelines, and to evaluate the initial and acquired drug resistance in Shandong province. METHODS: 30 of 141 counties/cities were randomly selected as surveillance points by cluster sampling from April to October 1997, in each of which 36 cases with smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis were continuously observed. Identification and susceptibility tests were done in all culture positive samples. RESULTS: The total frequency of drug resistance was 23.4%, initial drug resistance 17.6%, initial multi-drug resistance 2.9%, acquired drug resistance 50.0%, acquired multi-drug resistance 19.6%. CONCLUSIONS: The results suggest that the initial drug resistance still ranks high in Shandong province, National TB Control Program should be further strengthened.

[Implementation of mid-term national tuberculosis control programme].

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the implementation of mid-term National Tuberculosis Control Programme (NTP). METHOD: The construction of tuberculosis control organizations, implementation of tuberculosis control work, etc, were investigated retrospectively. RESULTS: Almost all the tuberculosis control indices had reached the mid-term NTP target except the case-finding index. CONCLUSIONS: Much more efforts are required to reach the NTP target of year 2000 that the prevalence of smear positive pulmonary tuberculosis decrease to 70 per 100,000 populations.
