Lateralization of perceptual closure ability.

The present study investigated lateralization of perceptual closure ability. A zero-power, partially occluded, soft contact-lens system was used to lateralize visual input. This technique has been shown to create reliable artificial visual-field deficits when used in situations offering unlimited duration of stimulus exposure. The Street Gestalt Completion Test was administered to 18 right-handed men with no history of head trauma, neurological disorders, or familial sinistrality. Using repeated-measures analyses, and controlling for age, we found no significant hemispheric advantage for either speed or accuracy of performance.

A novel contact-lens system to assess visual hemispheric asymmetries.

A soft contact-lens system for achieving unilateral visual stimulation in a free vision format is described. Initial testing with light transmittance and visual perimetry indicated that the lenses created artificial visual-field deficits. The efficacy of the lenses as a technique for lateralizing visual input was evaluated by examining within-subject differences in performance on two visuospatial tasks. Speed and accuracy of performance were greater with visual input directed to the right hemisphere. These data support the lens design as a useful alternative to tachistoscopic procedures and previous lens systems.

Associative processes in differentially reared rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta): blocking.

Nine isolate and 6 socially reared adult rhesus monkeys were examined in a standard blocking procedure. A tone was paired with a startle stimulus (US) during Phase 1. A tone-light compound CS was paired with a US during Phase 2. In Phase 3, the light was presented alone to test for blocking. Results showed that learning about the light was blocked in social controls, but not in isolates. These data suggest isolates processed information atypically, in that they developed an association to a redundant cue. A second group of isolates (n = 3) underwent the identical procedures. However, conditioned reactions to the tone were extinguished before testing. Test responding was significantly reduced in this group, that is, blocking was obtained. These data suggest the within-compound association developed during Phase 2 mediated the isolate blocking deficit. Together, these findings imply long-term intellectual consequences of early social impoverishment. Such deficits may be mediated by alterations in central dopamine systems.

The relationship between color preference and psychiatric disorders.

The relationship between color preference and psychiatric disorders was studied in an outpatient psychiatric sample (N = 1,143). The results were studied by gender and by age. The patients' choice of Luscher's eight colors revealed a sex difference, but only minor variations with age. The present data show both consistencies and discrepancies with past data.
