Using a Delphi Technique in a needs assessment for an innovative approach to advanced general dentistry education.

The University of Kentucky College of Dentistry has been awarded a $500,000 grant to develop and test a university-based educational program leading to a graduate certificate in Advanced General Dentistry, by the use of "extended campus" and distance learning methods. As an aid in developing this curriculum, dentists in general practice in non-urban Kentucky were asked about their educational needs. A Delphi Technique approach to this assessment was adopted. Forty dentists in general practice in non-urban areas in eastern and southern Kentucky were sent four mailings in which they rated or re-rated 65 topics for inclusion in the curriculum. A total of 59 topics were voted to be essential or desirable for the curriculum, 40 of them by a 2/3 majority. The Delphi Technique was workable for involving students in curriculum design. The curriculum produced by this method has also proven to be attractive to the dentists and their colleagues.

Evaluating a behavioral method to manage dental fear: a 2-year study of dental practices.

Eleven private general practices and a university clinic formed a network to treat dental fear. The practices located in four states learned a method of treating dental fear using dental staff members and audiovisual materials. This study is an evaluation of the network's effectiveness. In 15 months, 111 patients were treated by the network. The dentists reported providing substantial dental treatment to 77% (n = 86) of the patients. The study showed that private general practices can effectively treat strong dental fear.

Gloved and ungloved: performance time for two dental procedures.

This study examines the time required to perform two routine dental procedures requiring fine hand manipulative skills--a pin placement procedure and an endodontic procedure. No significant time difference was noted in performing the procedures while wearing gloves or not wearing gloves. Twelve dentists who had routinely worn gloves for the past 6 months participated, each performing four procedures.

Adding a posterior palatal seal to a metal-based prosthesis.

A method of adding an acrylic resin posterior palatal seal to a cast base metal palate of a maxillary complete denture is presented. The technique may be used to create the original posterior palatal seal or to enhance an existing seal. The advantages and disadvantages of the metal palate are discussed. The clinical technique is presented along with the representative laboratory metal etching information.
