Nurses' requirements for information technology in the next millennium.

The main purpose of this study was to identify nurses' requirements for information technology in the next millennium. We distributed 350 questionnaires in a teaching hospital in Brazil and in the USA. We received 86 from Brazil and 78 from USA. Besides the capabilities of computers to be used in different sectors of human actions, nurses' requirements for information technology can not be considered sophisticated. Nurses in Brazil prefer a standalone system. In contrast, in USA they prefer systems that could be integrated to the whole healthcare system. Also, in the USA, nurses were more comfortable with use of computers than nurses in Brazil. In general terms, nurses in both countries feel that computer systems could make their practice easier and more efficient.

[Utilization of nursing diagnosis according to Nanda's classification for the systematization of nursing care in breast feeding].

The present study aimed at describing the reformulated instrument used in the puerperal woman nursing consultation based on the identified diagnoses classification according to the Taxonomy-I reviewed by NANDA, and the identification of the most frequent nursing diagnoses concerning maternal breastfeeding, based on the reformulated instrument. The diagnoses found as being over 50% were: knowledge deficit (100%); sleep pattern disturbance (75%), altered sexuality patterns (75%), ineffective breastfeeding (66.6%) and impaired physical mobility (66.6%).

Well born: development of pregnancy.

Although pregnancy is a biologically normal phenomenon, it is an exceptional event in the life of a woman and her family and, as such, requires a deviation in the organization of values and function. Thus, the aim in developing this system is to provide a supporting tool for students, pregnant women, and obstetrical professors in this situation. The objectives are the following: to demonstrate the several stages of normal pregnancy and to demonstrate the modifications occurring in the maternal body during normal pregnancy. The second trimester of pregnancy has been described as the time when most women seek prenatal care and read books and attend talks about pregnant women in order to receive explanations for the events that are occurring in their bodies. We believe that at this moment, access to software with information on the formation and development of the fetus and the physiologic modifications occurring in the maternal body would be of great help to the family. The system will show, with pictures and text, the global phases in pregnancy, such as: fertilization (gamete fusion, formation of the ovum, nidation, blastulation, gastrulation); formation of embryonic assessors; smooth and shaggy chorion; amniotic and allantoic vesicle; placentogenesis; development of the embryo; maternal circulation; morphological and physiological development of the fetus; anatomical and physiological adaptations and modifications of the maternal body. The method was done with the review in the current literature and to raise audiovisual resources on the issue. The software is being developing using multimedia techniques. We are using the ToolBook software to be run in Windows environment. In view of the above, the elaboration of this software, still nonexistent in Brazil, becomes indispensable and useful for our students, health professionals, and women in general.

Prevention of AIDS and living together with an HIV-infected patient.

In Brazil, approximately 45 thousand cases had been reported until the end of 1993, with an estimated 50% underreport. According to the Ministry of Health, until the year 2,000 from 2 to 8 million Brazilians citizens will be infected with HIV. The basic aspect of the educational campaigns regarding AIDS does not refer only to information on forms of transmission and prevention measures, but also attempts to fight against the mystification and the enormous resistance of the public to definitely accept the fact that transmission does not occur by simple means such as having a drink from the same glass, independently of its socioeconomic and cultural level. In addition to the lack of information, prejudice and discrimination appear strongly rooted in the population to the point of a tendency of social and effective rejection of the HIV-infected patient. Fighting against prejudice, against which there is also no vaccine, is a task as gigantic as fighting against the virus. For both, investments in education of and information to the population in general, is very important. Development of a software which would fulfill the function of explaining, and providing the correct information about AIDS, would be extremely valuable for any part of the society and could also be used as a complementary element by health professionals. The objective was to develop an interactive software in order to demonstrate prevention measures and universal precaution in AIDS; to inform about the necessary care to people that are living together an HIV-infected patient. To develop this software with animation and elucidating text regarding AIDS for the general population, we are using the Storyboard live to be run in Windows environment.

Development of nursing CAI in the administration: nursing daily hospital problems.

Since the nurse emerged as a qualified professional to attend human beings, the role which always characterized his/her action was assistance. Already since the foundation of the first nursing school, teaching aimed at developing the student to dispense nursing care necessary for the patient's assistance. When the nurse started to perform their activities in nosocomial and community institutions, the need for someone who would be responsible for the organization, coordination and control of nursing personnel and the Nursing Unit itself, in short, someone who would head the services became apparent. At present, the professional role of the nurse is changing regarding his/her overall assistance to the patient, caring directly, determining and/or carrying out nursing assistance necessary for the patient's health, maintenance or recovery. In this manner, it is necessary for nurses to use tools of administration science such as planning, decision making, and planned changes in order to be able to provide the nursing assistance with quality. Thus, this study aims at helping the development of the nurse's interest in computer during the teaching-learning process, motivating the search for knowledge in computerized sources. We intended to offer the opportunity for discussion and reflection on problems of nosocomial nursing practice, favoring interchange of theory and practice. The system is being developing using ToolBook Live Software to be run in Windows environment. The content of the subject allow the user (student or professional nursing) to choose the most correct answers to questions in the knowledge area. In this case, to discuss nursing administration issues through the study of practical situations is possible, such as the opportunity the verify the performance in tests.

Help: first aid issues.

First aid is the initial and immediate care given to a victim outside the hospital environment, with the purpose of assuring life and avoiding worsening conditions until he/she receives qualified assistance. Providing immediate aid to someone requires tranquility and, above all, knowledge on what has to be done or not in each situation. In addition to being treated by health professionals, the chances that a victim will receive early treatment by others are large. However, in Brazil, access to information, and the possibility of reviewing it whenever necessary, may contribute greatly to the process of assimilation of this knowledge, in addition to exercises on simulated cases. Informatics has been shown as an extremely useful tool in the development of educational software, considering its multiplicity of resources and providing for the users: motivation for an interactive experience, an individualized teaching that takes into account his/her own rhythm and desired complexity level, besides making possible the user's capacity for solving problems through simulated situations. Considering that, the number of individuals of the population prepared to act as First Aid helpers in situations of life threatening accidents or sudden illness is still very scarce. The ever increasing use of the computer as a mean of spreading information in schools, enterprises, and even households and considering the advantages of an educational software for the users regarding storage and retrieval of information when needed, we proposed the creation of an interactive teaching software. This software is being developed using Storyboard live. The methodology is the following: literature review, selection of images, development of the program, application tests. The initial selected issues are: assessment of the victim, cardiorespiratory arrest and resuscitation, airway obstruction, wounds, and hemorrhages. After utilizing the program, the user should be able to solve hypothetical situations with minimal initial care and maximal physical comfort for an accident or sudden illness victim.

Computer-Assisted Instruction

Nursing Informatics in Brazil. A Brazilian experience.

Nursing Informatics in Brazil began around 1985. In 1990, the Nursing Informatics Group at the Federal University of São Paulo (NIEn/UNIFESP) was created. The first task was to prepare students and professors to use computers. Since its creation, members of NIEn/UNIFESP have been working in clinical practice, administration, education, and research areas of Nursing Informatics. Initially, the discipline was introduced in the Doctoral and Master programs. Subsequently, all specialization degrees and undergraduate programs were provided with the discipline as well. In the research area, the author explores the use of computers as a tool to support nursing research as well as the implications of computer resources in nursing practice, administration, and teaching. However, the use of the computer as an instrument to support nurses' activities in taking care of patients still needs investment. The majority of hospital information systems do not attend to the nature of nursing practice.
