In a severe case of malaria, the chemosensitivity of a Plasmodium falciparum strain from a traveller to Tanzania who underwent chemoprophylaxis treatment with chloroquine (600 mg weekly) was evaluated in vitro. In the 28 hours maturation assay and a 72 hours proliferation assay, the strain proved to be highly resistant to chloroquine and to have a reduced sensibility to the sulfadoxin - pyrimethamin association.
The activity of some schistosomicidal drugs have been studied by electron microscopy on the tegument of Schistosoma mansoni. Results are different and depend of the compound which is tested. Two new compounds: RO 11 3128 and RO 13 3978 are specially active and act in different ways on the tegument. On of them, a benzodiazepine, have been tested in association with an "antibenzodiazepine" compound in order to avoid the sedative action without decrease of the schistosomicidal activity.
17 cases of resistant P. falciparum malaria are reported. They were observed in different populations: on one hand 9 Cambodian children refugees in France, on the other hand 8 French adults consulting after travels in South America or in South-East Asia. Different resistance levels to amino-4-quinolines and to a combination of sulfadoxine and pyrimethamine were found: they were more often from the RI type but sometimes from the RIII type also. 6 patients were treated with Mefloquine. Its activity was constant and rapid.
