[East-West migration in Europe (1918-1993)].

"This paper analyses available demographic data on international migration within and to Europe during the period 1918-1939 and 1945-1993. The main focus is on the east-west dimension of this migration. In the inter-war period some 9.2 million people either left their countries as labour migrants or were displaced.... In the post-war period (1945-1950) some 15.4 million people fled or were displaced within Europe.... Between 1950 and 1992 another 14 million people migrated from a country in East-central and Eastern Europe to the West.... In recent times the wars in Croatia and Bosnia as well as ethnic cleansing have led to the largest wave of refugees and displaced persons since 1945.... Our paper concludes that push and pull factors causing massive migration cannot only be contained by erecting new legislative barriers and deploying more armed border guards against newcomers." European East-West migration, 1945-1992.

"This article's thesis is that Europe is undergoing an international but intracontinental migration such as it has not seen since the beginning of the Cold War. The authors cite several reasons for the recent outburst of migration: ethnic relocation, the search for refuge and asylum, and the need for work. They also present a country-by-country description of sending and receiving nations. The push and pull factors causing such massive migration cannot only be contained by the present methods of having each government erect legislative and other barriers--such as armed border guards--against newcomers."

[Consequences of international migration for Austria. Population scenarios until 2031].

"The consequences of international immigration on population development and the labour market [in Austria] are assessed on the basis of four scenarios of possible political and economic developments in Europe. In case of massive immigration (net +50,000 per year) the residential population of Austria...will grow to 9.5 million within 40 years.... With a net immigration of +25,000 persons per year the residential population will grow to 8.3 inhabitants.... Without any immigration or with immigration and emigration of equal proportion, the population of Austria will shrink to somewhat above 7.1 million...." (SUMMARY IN ENG)

[World population today and tomorrow].

"In 1989/90 the world's population was approximately 5.2 billions. According to U.N.-projections (medium variant) every 10 to 11 years this figure will grow by one billion, corresponding to an increase of 100 [million] people per year.... [Austria as a target of immigration?].

This is an overview of the history of migration to and from Austria in the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. "The article describes the discrepancy between the demographic history of Austria as a country of immigration and the prevailing collective consciousness defining mass migration as historical exception. [Concepts, experiences and problems in the gradual reintegration into the work process. Results of an inventory taking].

Within the scope of an exploratory inventory check on measures of gradual reintegration into the work process, basic information has been collected for the first time. The programmes up to now implemented by rehabilitating agencies are presented with regard to their structural principles and various financing schemes. A critical assessment of introduction, implementation and success of these measures and their determinants is given, as well as proposed improvements and demands made by experts and the patients concerned.

[Migration in Austria: 1850-1900. Migration flows within the monarchy and the structure of migration to Vienna].

The author surveys migration within the Austrian part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire from 1850 to 1900 using census data. "As a result of the increase in regional mobility during the nineteenth century, clearly defined patterns of migration developed involving movement from the peripheral areas to the center.... In the process of this development, various sub-systems of migration appeared. Of these, migration from one region to another was more important than that within the same region...and Vienna, the Imperial capital, became the center of migration." Migrants are studied by place of origin and distance traveled and by social class and demographic characteristics. Employment, segregation, and the integration of urban migrants are also considered.
