Reduced benzodiazepine receptor binding in panic disorders measured by iomazenil SPECT.

We compared a group of nine patients with panic disorder (DSM-III-R) and depression with a matched control group of nine dysthymic patients without a previous or actual history of panic attacks or anxiety with iomazenil SPECT (single photon emission computed tomography) to evaluate panic-related abnormalities of the benzodiazepine receptor complex. The panic group had a significant decrease (p < .05, U-tests) in the regional activity index (RAI) in the following regions after 2 h: lateral inferior temporal lobes, right and left, medial inferior temporal lobes, left, inferior frontal lobes, right and left. All other regions investigated were not significantly different. The findings may be due to either regional blood flow differences or benzodiazepine receptor effects. The hypothesis that the effects are due to altered blood flow is confirmed to some extent by similar findings in the scans acquired after 10 min. Only the hypoactivity in the left lateral temporal region seemed to be independent of reduced blood flow in panic disorders.

[Nuclear medicine prediction of histologic tumor response of osteosarcoma].

The prediction of histologic tumor response to preoperative chemotherapy was assessed by quantitative scintigraphic follow-up examinations of 54 osteosarcomas. Tumor/non-tumor scintimetry using 99mTc labeled diphosphonates allowed accurate prediction of tumor response in 28 of 30 tumors (accuracy = 93%) after completion and in 10 of 12 osteosarcomas (accuracy = 83%) at the half-way stage of preoperative chemotherapy evaluating only those tumors which showed convergent changes of tumor/non-tumor ratios in the perfusion and the mineral phase. At the half-way stage, however, evaluation of chemotherapy effects was complicated in 12 of 23 osteosarcomas by diverging T/NT ratios. In contrast, quantification and mapping of the tumor plasma volume and 99mTc MDP plasma clearance predicted the histologic tumor response to chemotherapy in 12 of 13 tumors (accuracy = 92%) after completion and in all 11 cases (accuracy = 100%) at the half-way stage.

Ictal and interictal activity in partial epilepsy recorded with multichannel magnetoelectroencephalography: correlation of electroencephalography/electrocorticography, magnetic resonance imaging, single photon emission computed tomography, and positron emission tomography findings.

Ictal and interictal epileptic activity was recorded for the first time by multichannel magnetoencephalography (MEG) in three patients with partial epilepsy. Pre- and intra-operative localization of the epileptogenic region was compared. The interictal epileptic activity was localized at the same region of the temporal or frontal lobe as the ictal activity. Main zones of ictal activity were shown to evolve from the tissue at the centers of interictal activity. Pre- and intra-operative electrocorticography (ECoG) as well as postoperative outcome confirmed localization in the temporal and frontal lobe. Results also correlated with findings from scalp EEG, interictal and ictal single photon emission computed tomography (SPECT), positron emission tomography (PET), and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). Combined multichannel MEG/EEG recording permitted dipole localization of interictal and ictal activity.
