Vitamin A status (umbilical cord retinol levels) of 253 newborns in two public hospitals of Rio de Janeiro showed a high prevalence (55. 7%) of deficiency (retinol levels below 1.05 micromol/L). This rate of vitamin A deficiency (VAD) was independent of other nutritional and anthropometric parameters, such as low birth weight or small for gestational age. These data suggest that newborns can be as vulnerable to VAD as other population groups considered at high risk. They also suggest that special attention should be paid to this group, actually the most vulnerable to the harmful effects of VAD. Hypovitaminosis A should be among the first diagnostic hypotheses when an infant presents with an abnormality
We reviewed 239 charts of adolescents and young adults, who visited our clinic. The purpose was to know the incidence of the Human Papiloma Virus infection (HPVI), diagnosed by Pap's smears, and the relationship to a population with some gynecological and sociodemographic characteristics. The women age population was between 14-24 years old with a mean age of 19.9 years. Seventy (29.3%) were PIV positive and 169 (70.7%) negatives. About 75% among both groups (PIV + and -) began active sexual life between 15-19 years old. Among the women with 4 or more sexual partners, 55.6% were HPVI positive. About 60% of all women had never used any method before being admitted to the clinic. In this study there is no correlation between IVSA and HPVI. We do demonstrate that the greater the number of sexual partners, the highest the risk of a sexual acquired disease.

Bearing in mind that in the last years there has been an increase in rheumatic fever episodes, the authors evaluate the cases recently observed in the department. The data of 3 children born and living in Portugal, the first known outbreak of rheumatic fever observed between June 93 and March 94, were examined. One case presented polyarthritis, another polyarthritis and carditis and the third chorea and carditis. In just one case was the diagnosis of rheumatic fever considered in the beginning, and over-all, failures in the diagnosis and treatment of tonsillitis, and in echocardiographic diagnosis were detected. In view of these examples, the authors conclude that the increasing incidence and morbidity of rheumatic fever is more probably due to forgetfulness of old attitudes than to new causes. Delay in the diagnosis and errors in secondary prophylaxis may influence long term results.
