Cavernous hemangioma over the anterior fontanelle.

This is a report of an extremely rare case of cavernous hemangioma over the anterior fontanelle in a 5-year-old boy. Cavernous hemangioma is most common in or beneath the skin of the face, neck, and extremities and sometimes occurs in the scalp. Although cavernous hemangioma is often quoted in the literature as a differential diagnosis of a mass located at the anterior fontanelle, we could not find an illustrative case in published articles. We discuss the characteristics and differential diagnosis of cavernous hemangioma over the anterior fontanelle.

Foramen magnum meningioma and arachnoid cyst coinciding in the lateral cerebellomedullary cistern--case report.

An extremely rare foramen magnum meningioma associated with an arachnoid cyst in the lateral cerebellomedullary cistern occurred in a 65-year-old female presenting with dizziness. Neuroimaging revealed a meningioma at the left lateral edge of the foramen magnum and an arachnoid cyst mainly located in the right lateral cerebellomedullary cistern, compressing the medulla oblongata bilaterally. After fenestration of the cyst wall and tumor removal, the clinical symptoms ameliorated. We recommend that where a foramen magnum tumor coexists with an arachnoid cyst of the posterior fossa, the tumor should be removed after shrinking the cyst to obviate the need for brainstem retraction.

Comparison of spatial resolution between tomographic images and ghosts in rotational panoramic radiography: the effect of the first slit width.

Rotational panoramic radiography projects the object placed within the focal trough as tomographic images with minimal distortion. However, even if an object is within the focal trough, the sharpness of the image is affected by the position of the object, the difference in the relative speed of the X-ray source against the film and the difference in the direction of rotation. In this study, spatial resolutions of ghosts and tomographic images were compared. Ghosts, as well as tomographic images, were obtained from the object placed in the focal trough. The effects of the width of the first slit, a major parameter affecting image quality, were the primary concern in this study. With regard to ghosts, the influence of the position of object, in terms of central, buccal and lingual regions the focal trough, was also analyzed. The target of analysis was the mandibular ramus region. An Orthopantomograph OP5, a conventional panoramic apparatus, was used. An X-ray test chart, X-ray beams, and H-D curve were prepared for calculation of the Modulation Transfer Function (MTF), and the slit method using the Fourier transforms was applied. When the width of the first slit was changed displacement of MTF curves was most remarkable for the superimposed tomographic image which was scanned 10 mm posterior to the X-axis connecting the right and left lateral rotation centers. For reduction of the spatial resolution of ghosts, it was found effective to use a wider slit and place the object at a position lingual to the central plane.

Effect of nitric oxide on L-[3H]glutamate binding to rat brain synaptic membranes.

Nitric oxide (NO), which is spontaneously generated from sodium nitroprusside, was shown to inhibit L-[3H]glutamate binding to rat brain synaptic membranes in a concentration-dependent manner. The L-glutamate binding inhibited by NO, was largely recoverable by the addition of hemoglobin, a scavenger of NO, to the assay medium. These results suggest that NO may play an important role in the modulation of excitatory neurotransmission through direct interaction of L-glutamate binding to its physiological synaptic membrane receptors.

Direct injection of blood samples into a high-performance liquid chromatographic adenine analyser to measure adenine, adenosine, and the adenine nucleotides with fluorescence detection.

Adenine (Ade), adenosine (Ado) and its nucleotides such as AMP, cAMP, ADP and ATP in blood or plasma were determined by a high-performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC) adenine analyser with fluorescence detection. In order to inject samples directly into the HPLC system without pretreatment except dilution, the analyser consisted of two systems each, having three columns (pre-, mini- and analytical). A precolumn with an inlet filter of pore size 40 microns was common to both systems and packed with Butyl-Toyopearl 650-M to remove hydrophobic compounds and blood cell membranes. In the system for analysis of the nucleotides, a mini-column of Hitachi anion-exchange gel 3013-N was used for adsorbing AMP, cAMP, ADP and ATP. The adsorbed nucleotides were separated by the Hitachi gel 3013-N analytical column. In the other system for analysis of Ado and Ade, they were adsorbed on a Develosil ODS-5 mini-column and separated by an Asahipak GS-320H size-exclusion analytical column. The adenine compounds in each eluate were derivatized on-line in a 15-m reaction coil at 115 degrees C with bromoacetaldehyde as the fluorescent reagent in each mobile phase for the analytical column, and detected by spectrofluorimetry. ATP, ADP and AMP were accurately determined by the direct injection of hamster, rat and human whole blood. Authentic Ade and Ado were well separated and Ado in human plasma was determined, but it was difficult to determine it in rat plasma owing to interference from an unknown compound.

Measurement of adenine nucleotide levels with an adenine analyser as an index of freshness of porgy.

In a prototype of an adenine analyser, adenosine and adenine nucleotides were derivatized with a fluorescent reagent, bromoacetaldehyde, after separation on a Hitachi gel No. 3012-N column by high-performance liquid chromatography. The previous analyser was improved by using a shorter reaction coil and by introduction of a Hitachi gel No. 3013-N with 5-microns particles of porous polystyrene-divinylbenzene, and applied to estimate the freshness of porgy. Total amounts of ATP, ADP and AMP in an isolated muscle just after death gradually decreased to 60% of the original amount after 5 h, and the ATP content rapidly decreased to 20% after 1 h. A good correlation was found between the levels of total adenine compounds and the energy charge values obtained from nineteen porgies frozen at a prerigour state. On the other hand, there existed no relationship between total adenine levels and the K values, which were indices for estimating freshness of fish. The analyser will be useful to evaluate the freshness of tissues and cells based on the higher contents of total adenine compounds, especially ATP.

Effects of arginine derivatives on soluble guanylate cyclase from neuroblastoma N1E 115 cells.

The effects of L-arginine (Arg) derivatives on soluble guanylate cyclase from neuroblastoma N1E 115 cells were examined. The Arg derivatives were modified at the -NH2, -COOH, C alpha-proton or guanidino group of Arg. Among the synthesized derivatives, eight compounds, i.e. the 5-(dimethylamino)-1-naphthalenesulfonyl (DNS) ones, especially N-cyclohexyl-2-(N-DNSamino)-5-guanidino-2-methylvaleramide and 1-[2-(N-DNSamino)-2-(2-imino-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydropyrimidin- 4-yl)acetyl]- piperidine, were found to inhibit the activity of crude guanylate cyclase in the 105,000 g supernatant fraction of the cell homogenate. The enzyme, partially purified by a column of Chelex 100 Na+, was also inhibited by these eight compounds. The mode of the inhibition was competitive. The Ki values were in the range of 2-8 microM for the enzyme in the 105,000 g supernatant fraction and 3-16 microM for the partially purified enzyme, in the presence of Mg2+ as a metal cofactor. In contrast, a new derivative, methyl 2-amino-5-guanidinovalerate (M Arg ME), as well as the Arg methyl ester (Arg ME) and Arg; were found to enhance the activity of the partially purified guanylate cyclase; KA values of M Arg ME, Arg ME and Arg were approximately 9, 4 and 3 microM respectively. From these results, the free guanidino group including 2-imino-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydropyrimidin-4-yl or 2-imino-1,2,3,4,5,6-hexahydropyrimidin-5-yl and modification of the --NH2 residue with a hydrophobic group such as DNS seemed to be essential for inhibition of the guanylate cyclase; however, the guanidino and --NH2 residue of Arg should be free for activation by these Arg derivatives.

[The clinical course of chronic methamphetamine psychoses].

3 cases with chronic methamphetamine psychoses (MAP-P) were studied from the clinical psychiatric point of view and discussed: 1.) The average time of occurrence of psychotic symptoms in our 3 cases after beginning of MAP abuse was two or three years. 2.) Although the psychotic states (often schizophrenia-like) were stable for a short time, the symptoms recurred promptly after reinjection of a small amount of MAP, unspecific stress or drinking sake (flashback phenomenon). The recurrence may happen even after several years. 3.) In cases of chronic MAP-P disturbances of consciousness are rare. Chronic process of MAP-P cases may show acute transient disturbances of consciousness (flashback phenomenon). 4.) The change of affects and behaviour ranges between irritable and indifferent attitudes. While there are close connections between the disturbance of feeling and change of personality (Wesensänderung), it is very difficult to decide whether premorbid character traits are dominant or there is a change of personality or emotional disturbance. 5.) About acute psychic symptoms which are responsible for recurrence of MAP-P, MAP-abusers make the experience that their intimate personal affairs are overlooked and become public (uncovered defensive experiences). In chronic cases of MAP-P we often meet patients with hypertrophic self-feeling or delusion of grandeur predominant in the symptomatology. 6.) In our cases sensations were amalgamated into each other and there were hallucinatory experiences without clear division between them. 7.) In chronic cases the auditory hallucinations criticized or censured the patients for their behaviour. Thought echoing (Gedankenlautwerden) was found. We found signs of mind reading (Gedankenausbreitung).

[Performance evaluation of X-ray computed tomography "TCT-700 S". 2].

UNLABELLED: The performance of the rotate/rotate CT scanner TCT-700 S (Toshiba) was evaluated on the basis of the item entitled "User's initial acceptance tests (phase II)" set forth in "Standard of performance evaluation for x-ray computed tomography (second recommendation)" proposed by Takenaka et al. (1982). This second report in the series describes measurements of exposure and the relation between exposure and such other performance aspects as noise and contrast resolution. The exposure-performance recommendation proposes measurements of average exposure in the scanning field and a radial exposure profile. RESULTS: 1. In the case of multiple scanning, average exposures in the field were uniform because all surfaces of the perpendicular object were oriented toward the incidence of the x-ray beam. At a minimum scanning speed of 1.8 second, however, a discrepancy of 3 times occurred in exposures observed reciprocally from the left and right sides of the object. This phenomenon indicates that only one-half of the object surface is oriented toward the x-ray beam and that the x-ray tube and detectors rotate in mutually opposite directions. In the case of multiple scannings, when slice thicknesses were 10 mm, 5 mm and 2 mm, average exposures were almost uniform. But with a slice thickness of 1 mm, average exposure was twice as great. This measurement indicates inadequate collimation in the case of a 1 mm slice thickness. These average exposures were roughly proportional to the mAs (product of tube current and scan speed) in the range between a minimum of 100 mAs and a maximum of 1200 mAs. 2. [Performance evaluation of the X-ray computed tomography "TCT-700 S" (Part 1)].

The performance of the Rotate/Rotate CT scanner "TCT-700 S" (Toshiba) was evaluated on the basis of the item entitled "User's initial acceptance tests (phase II)," set forth in "Standard of performance evaluation for X-ray computed tomography (second recommendation)" proposed by Takenaka et al. (1982). This report describes measurements for noise, contrast scale, spatial resolution, and high- and low-contrast resolution. Recommended phantoms were used to test performance. Results 1. Noise edepended on slice thickness and mAs. It increased as slice thickness decreased. No matter what the slice thickness, noise was great when mAs settings were small. Furthermore, short scan time caused considerable noise for each slice thickness. Reduction of mAs setting caused remarkable increased in noise when slice thickness were 1 mm or 2 mm Under routine examination, when thickness was 5 mm, at 120 kV, with an mAs setting of 440, scan field S(diameter 240 mm), and convolution filter FC-2, noise was 0.31%. When slice thickness was 10 mm at 120kv, 800mAs, with a scan field S (diameter 240 mm), and convolution filter FC-2, contrast scale was 1.84 x 10(-4) (cm-1/CT number). 2. When slice thickness was 5 mm, at 120 kV, with a mAs setting of 1200, scan field S(diameter 240 mm), and a convolution filter of FC-2, spatial resolution was 0.5LP/mm. 3. When slice thickness was 5 mm, at 120kV, with a mAs setting of 1200, scan field S (diameter 240 mm), and convolution filter of FC-2, minimum high-contrast resolution was 0.5 mm.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)

Analyses of adenosine and adenine nucleotides in biological materials by fluorescence reaction-high-performance liquid chromatography.

A previous method of determination of adenine compounds by high-performance liquid chromatography, using bromoacetaldehyde as a fluorescent reagent and a column of Hitachi gel No. 3012-N, was improved and extended to biological materials, especially to measure enzyme activities. A column packed with finer beads, Hitachi gel No. 3013-N, was found to be better than that of No. 3012-N, judging from the analysis time and resolution. ADP, from the hydrolysis of ATP by Na, K-ATPase, was determined quantitatively, and the enzyme activity was inhibited with ouabain. cAMP obtained from ATP by reaction with adenylate cyclase was also determined in the presence of various concentrations of L-epinephrine or sodium fluoride. The ATP levels in human blood were determined, and the cellular levels of ATP and ADP in neuroblastoma N1E 115 were examined as a function of cell growth.

[Delusions and society in Japan and China from a transcultural-psychiatric viewpoint].

The relationship between contents of schizophrenic delusions and sociocultural background in the modern society of Japan and China were studied from transcultural psychiatric aspects. The data of this study were derived from the public mental hospitals in Tokyo and Shanghai in a similar size; of 186 cases (88 cases of male, 98 cases of female) of the first admission in Tokyo Metropolitan Matsuzawa Hospital during 1981-1983, 112 cases with delusions (53 cases of male, 59 cases of female) were selected, and of 200 cases (112 cases of male, 88 cases of female) of the first admission in Shanghai Psychiatric Hospital in 1983, 129 cases with delusions (70 cases of male, 59 cases of female) were chosen. The incidence of delusions of physical persecution and grandeur was relatively high in patients of both hospitals in Tokyo and Shanghai, while the incidence of delusions with hypochondria and guilt was low in both hospitals. Only the incidence of delusion of poisoning was significantly higher in Shanghai than in Tokyo (mean 2 = 12.97, p less than 0.001). After the World War II, the patriarchally oriented family system was abolished in Japan which caused shifting the system from a large family to a nuclear family. In China where the property (land) and daily life were closely connected the close human relationship among generations had important values in relation to the labor power within the frame of a large family. It is believed that occurrence of the delusion of poisoning might be a reflection of the disturbed human relationship within the family member in dining which should be helpful for making further understanding and reliance. It's occurrence conflict and struggle in the community of the outside of the family. At present there is a marked difference between Chinese and Japanese in their structure of consciousness. The former places high value and meaningfulness on the participation to the group and seeks protection and safety of individuals. The latter reveals a less strong tie with the traditional conformity and dependency to the mass due to the conformation of the nuclear family. It can not be ignored the possible effect of the close horizontal interaction and cautious human relationships among neighbours with fear of rumor and watching in the Chinese community on the occurrence of the delusion of persecution. After the World War II, abolishment of the principle of vertical control system and introduction of multiple value system together with loss of authority had taken place in Japan.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 400 WORDS)
