Arabidopsis AUX1 gene: a permease-like regulator of root gravitropism.

The plant hormone auxin regulates various developmental processes including root formation, vascular development, and gravitropism. Mutations within the AUX1 gene confer an auxin-resistant root growth phenotype and abolish root gravitropic curvature. Polypeptide sequence similarity to amino acid permeases suggests that AUX1 mediates the transport of an amino acid-like signaling molecule. Indole-3-acetic acid, the major form of auxin in higher plants, is structurally similar to tryptophan and is a likely substrate for the AUX1 gene product. The cloned AUX1 gene can restore the auxin-responsiveness of transgenic aux1 roots. Spatially, AUX1 is expressed in root apical tissues that regulate root gravitropic curvature.

Initial STD visits by adolescent females, Dallas County, Texas.

Sexually active adolescents are at high risk for unintended pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. We identified a cohort of 6089 women aged 13 to 21 years who in 1985 either delivered an infant at Parkland Hospital (3154) or used the outpatient clinics (2935). We reviewed those records and others in the Dallas County sexually transmitted disease (STD) clinic for the period 1983 through 1988 to determine the prevalence of visits to the Dallas County STD clinic by pregnant and nonpregnant adolescents, STD diagnoses at initial visit, whether STD visits and diagnoses varied by pregnancy status or ethnic background, and how the women were referred to the STD clinic. Similar percentages of nonpregnant (13%) and pregnant (11%) women had an STD visit, and most adolescents who visited the STD clinic had an STD diagnosis made. Gonorrhea and syphilis were the STDs diagnosed most frequently in both pregnant and nonpregnant adolescents. Regardless of pregnancy status, black adolescents were 7.3 times more likely to have an STD visit. Referral by a sexual partner was the second most common reason that adolescents sought STD care. Our study provides only minimal estimates of STDs among adolescents but indicates STDs, regardless of pregnancy status, are a more common medical problem than has been reported previously. Referral by sexual partners may be an important way to reach adolescents at risk for STDs.

Changing immunization referral patterns among pediatricians and family practice physicians, Dallas County, Texas, 1988.

Family practice physicians and pediatricians in Dallas County, Texas, were surveyed to determine how recent vaccine price increases have changed immunization referral patterns. A total of 73% of responding physicians referred some pediatric patients for immunization in 1988. Public health clinics were the largest referral source with more responding pediatricians (84.4%) referring patients than did responding family practitioners (66.5%). Referrals to the clinics were most often made when patients were unable to afford immunizations in a private practice setting. Between 1979 and 1988, the number of responding pediatricians and family practitioners making immunization referrals increased by 193% and 391%, respectively. The percentages of children referred for immunization increased by 693% during the same decade. It was suggested by our survey of Dallas County physicians that a new influx of patients are using public sector immunizations, potentially creating additional financial stress for public health programs. In addition, this shift to the public sector may undermine the health departments' ability to provide new vaccines or protect greater numbers of children with immunization.

Caring and communicating. Observations on 19 Baby Doe patients.

Under authority of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, and stimulated by the well-publicized birth of a child with Down syndrome and esophageal atresia in 1982, the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) has actively responded to reports of alleged discriminatory failure to care for handicapped infants. Investigators and consultants from the (HHS) Office for Civil Rights have visited hospitals and interviewed various persons. Observations made and unofficial conclusions drawn by one participant in 19 such investigations relate not only to the care provided to these children but also to elements of communication with family, hospital staff, and others. Misunderstandings, faulty interpretations, and unrealistic expectations have resulted in bitter feelings, confusion, and frank hostility. These observations reveal an immediate need for reexamination of interpersonal communications in the context of caring for these children.

Preschool children's conceptual tempo and performance on visual discrimination tasks.

The present study explored the relationship among conceptual tempo, age, sex, and performance on the Visual Association subtest of the Illinois Test of Psycholinguistic Abilities (VA-ITPA). Preschool boys (n = 17) and girls (n = 34) were Ss. Time to the first response to the VA-ITPA rather than the Matching Familiar Figures Test (MFFT) was the measure of response latency. Results indicated that: (a) response error was a function of response latency, (b) response error was a function of age, (c) there was a multiple linear relationship among response latency, age, and response error. It was concluded that response latency not only related to errors on the MFFT but to other visual discrimination tasks.

Accuracy of birth certificate data for detecting facial cleft defects in Arkansas children.

A comparison of facial cleft defects reported on birth certificates during the period 1943 to 1974 that were reported on birth certificates was made with records maintained by the Arkansas Crippled Childrens Services (CCS). A total of 506 cases were reported of which 331 (65%) were recorded on the birth certificate. Moreover, the accuracy of the reporting was not good. Only 243 (48%) cleft malformations were correctly classified on the birth certificate. Birth certificate information is an inadequate measure of the true facial cleft occurrence in Arkansas. Caution must be exercised when this data source is used in epidemiological surveys because over one-third of such defects were not recorded. These findings serve to reemphasize the national need to improve the quality of such vital health statistics sources.

The clinic waiting room. Environment for health education via television.

Parents and children in a clinic waiting room are motivated toward better health and constitute a receptive audience for health education via the familiar medium of television. A videotape cassette covering materials from four areas of child health care was displayed in an out-patient waiting area, using a recorder-player and monitor. Parents were interviewed prior to the introduction of the video program, immediately after the program, and again by telephone two weeks after exposure to the program. Analysis of the interviews revealed increases in knowledge about child health, as well as positive attitudes toward the clinic. The familiarity, availability, and nonthreatening nature of the medium were deemed advantages of this format.
