Participant-observation techniques were used to study the everyday cognition and problem-solving process in marketing tasks defined and organized by mildly mentally retarded adults. Observations were systematized in terms of five primary functional units: logistics, activity goal, item selection, quantity selection, and payment strategy. Results revealed five "composites" of strategic behavior used by these adults that represent characteristic ways of addressing problematic aspects of this everyday task environment. An association between composite and early life experiences was also shown. These results were used to characterize further the nature of everyday cognitive behavior, including discussions of the nature of everyday performance, the "externalization" of cognition through the explicit design of settings, and the presence and utility of retarded adult's metacognitive skills.
Situational (A-state) anxiety reactions of mildly mentally retarded adults were studied using a self-report anxiety inventory under four sets of conditions ranging from presumed high to low stress. The effects of work experiences and social activity on situational anxiety were also examined, as was the relationship between anxiety and performance on an observational task. Significant results show higher overall anxiety under stressful conditions and lower anxiety scores for individuals who are employed and who are socially active. A high positive correlation was found between anxiety level and performance. The implications of these findings for understanding the emotional life and everyday competence of retarded adults were discussed.
A program to train patients with Cooley's anemia to self-administer deferoxamine via an intermittent infusion pump is described. A pharmacist provides the patient and his family with indepth information on the disease and on deferoxamine dosage, preparation, subcutaneous administration, stability, storage, side effects and precautions. Patients are trained by the pharmacist in aseptic technique and in use and maintenance of the intermittent infusion pump. The patient education program allows patients with Cooley's anemia to receive their daily deferoxamine therapy without the neef for frequent hospitalization.
The modern conception of alcoholism as a progressive, addictive disease dates from the late 18th century. By the mid-1800s it had become an integral part of American Temperance thought, as did the belief that total abstinence offered the only remedy for intemperance.

In order to focus attention on education, the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston adopted a system of internal review. The process was initially conducted for courses in the basic sciences by an ad hoc dean's committee consisting of representatives from the teaching faculty, administration, and student body as well as experts in medical education. As a consequence of the experience with the review of the basic science courses, the internal review process was applied to the clinical science courses and the elective programs at UTMB. The activities of the internal review process have resulted in improvements in instructional procedures and structural changes in the medical school's approach to educational planning, implementation, and evaluation.

This artical summarizes six years of experience of the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) with a summer program for the recruitment of minority students. During the six years, UTMB conducted six summer experiences for 112 Mexican-American and black premedical students and made numerous contacts with undergraduate college faculty and administrative staff for the purpose of increasing minority student enrollment in medical schools in general and in UTMB in particular. The program, which emphasized experiences which would increase the potential student's motivations, information, and academic skills, has resulted in numerous minority students entering medical school; but the impact on UTMB enrollments has been disappointing. Implications of the results of the program on future efforts to recruit minority students are discussed.
As part of an attempt to match the seminar program in pediatrics to the increased level of sophistication that students during the latter half of their core clerkship year would possess compared with students who enter pediatrics early in the year, the faculty of the Department of Pediatrics at The University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston developed a typical final examination (a 100-item, multiple-choice test) and administered it as a pretest to each section of the junior class as it entered pediatrics. Analysis of the data indicated the following. A substantial portion of the cognitive information required for success in the clinical years was acquired prior to entry to the clerkship; scores of students entering their last clerkship were almost the same in the pretest in pediatrics as were those of students who took the pretest 10 monts earlier; posttest scores were substantially higher than pretest scores for all groups of students. The paper includes some discussion of the reasons for the findings and a description of the steps being taken to remedy deficiencies in the educational and evaluation program revealed by the study.
