Metastatic tumour to the tongue is extremely rare. We report a case of renal adenocarcinoma metastasis involving the right side of the base of the tongue with extension to the right vallecula in a 59-year-old man in which a piece of the metastatic lesion in the tongue was expectorated and was the first evidence of the primary tumour in the right kidney. Previously reported cases are reviewed.
Starch was used to mark the resection margins of breast tissue simply by rolling formalin fixed specimens in, for instance, glove powder. Starch adheres satisfactorily to the specimen and is obvious, microscopically, if crossed polarisers are used. There is little "carry-over" of starch across the rest of the tissue, and subsequent radiology of specimen or blocks is not prejudiced. It is concluded that starch powder is eminently suitable in most cases as a single marker of the surgically cut surface. The method is quick, cheap, and clean. It should not be relied on, anymore than other methods, to mark the surgically cut surface of ragged or partly disrupted specimens.

A prospective study of 232 patients with primary invasive breast cancer (UICC Stages I, II and III) and histologically confirmed axillary node status was carried out to assess the prognostic significance of several readily available clinical and pathological characteristics. In addition to the recognised utility of tumour size and axillary lymph node status, the presence or absence of cohesive clumps of malignant cells in peritumoral vascular spaces (both lymphatic and blood vessels) was found to be prognostically important.
The occurrence of an osteosarcoma at the site of a cobalt-chrome total hip replacement is described, and the possibility of the tumour arising as a result of the liberation of cobalt particles is discussed. The experimental and clinical evidence relating tumour formation to the presence of particulate metals, and to the presence of solid and particulate polyethylene, is presented. It is considered that the risk of tumour formation at the site of any total hip replacement is very small.
