In many cattle herds in Lower Saxony the serologic IBR/IPV = BHV-1-status is known because since 1988 the bovine herpes virus infection (BHV 1), the infectious rhinotracheitis and pustular vulvovaginitis (IBR/IPV) are being fought. Through extensive investigations in five districts in the Weser-Ems area, it was found that cows infected by bovine herpes virus (BHV 1) are also protected to a high degree against infection by porcine herpes suis virus (SHV 1). An interpretation of the observed cross protection is not yet possible; further research is necessary.
The mucosa of the abomasum is a strongly acidic and therefore germ poor, but not entirely germfree environment. Only in isolated areas of the fundic glands zone were straight rods in the foveolas, and even more seldom spiral shaped bacteria could be encountered. They had no relation to the inflammatory infiltrates. On the other hand, Campylobacter-like organisms were more often observed in the pyloric region and, preferably, in a narrow zone following the cutaneous mucosa of the omasum. These organisms appeared to have a different size (1.3 to 2.4 microns length and 0.4 to 0.8 microns width) and they occurred deep inside the glands in an almost pure fashion. Whereas they caused no visible reaction of the tissue in the narrow cardiac zone, their occurrence in the pyloric region was several times connected with neutrophilic-rich infiltration. It ought to be tested, whether Helicobacter are among these Campylobacter-like organisms, which cause a disease leading up to ulcerations in calves similar to gastritis B in humans.
On the basis of measurements of dust sediment samples, carried out from 1984 to 1988 in the environment of trace element emitting plants and industrial centers of the former GDR, the exposure of the people in the region of the ferrometallurgical plant Brandenburg (with 12 Siemens Martin furnaces) had been investigated. Samples of hair, urine and blood of 170 men and children had been taken for this investigation. For a correct assessment of the exposition we have also measured the dust in flats. In comparison to persons from clean regions higher concentration level of Cu and Mn in hair, Cd in urine and Pb in blood were found in the population group living near to the emittent. But these concentration levels have not yet reached an acute danger of inhabitants of the investigated industrial centre. The limited increase of heavy metal concentration is also a consequence of the information of the inhabitants.
2200 weekly samples of airborne particulate matter from 33 measuring sites have been obtained by 12 district institutes of hygiene (Gera, Chemnitz, Leipzig, Dresden, Erfurt, Frankfurt, Magdeburg, Neubrandenburg, Rostock, Cottbus, and Berlin). After pressure digestion of the impacted membrane filters the concentrations of 15 elements (Ca, Mg, Sr, Ba, Be, Fe, Al, Ti, Cr, Mn, V, Zn, Cu, Pb, and Cd) were analysed by ICP-Spectrometry. The Immissions were calculated using the air sample volumes. Measuring points with very high immissions are: steel plant Riesa, district Dresden (nonferrous and ferrous metals), Drübeck, near to the copper plant Ilsenburg (nonferrous metals), Lead paint plant Ohrdruf, district Erfurt (highest Pb-Immission: 3137 ng/m3), Special glass plant Weisswasser, district Cottbus (Ba, Pb and Cd), Leipzig (dust and all other elements). Four groups of measuring site with different characteristic types of immissions could be distinguished by means of factor and cluster analysis. The separation of these groups by discriminant analysis was significant (P greater than 0.95). The seasonal trends showed maximal values in winter and minimal values in summer.
The 2nd Dresden hematonocological meeting, organized by the Department of hematology and oncology of the Medical Academy "Carl Gustav Carus" and by the Tumorzentrum Dresden, focused ethical and anthropological topics. Death and dying, care and health prevention in modern oncology as well as the broad field of supportive care were discussed. The goal of the meeting was to find long time concepts of a patient oriented medical care in cancer patients. This will only be possible in interdisciplinary structures including philosophers, theologians, clinicians and general practitioners. The rapid progress of medical development in Eastern Germany must not forget this goal.
The authors report on 6 sisters and brothers with Bourneville's disease (tuberous sclerosis). The article describes the different morphologic manifestations of the illness in the patients and places them in relation with the generally assumed principal signs with special reference to the new imaging techniques such as cranial computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. These methods reveal pathognomonic patterns already very early, in association with specific clinical changes. Tuberous sclerosis must be excluded even in apparently healthy relatives by an exact diagnosis. Computed tomography is an absolutely indispensable indicator in this regard, since it is a highly sensitive method.

Multiple intranasal experimental Mycoplasma (M.) bovis infection was induced to 22 calves and resulted in clinical manifestations. M. bovis was re-isolated from 17 of 24 lungs which had been altered by pneumonia. Pasteurella haemolytica was the only pathogen isolated from the pathologically affected lung of one of the experimental animals. The haematogenic proliferation phase was successfully identified in 5 of 8 examined calves. Arthritis was not recordable from any of the experimental animals. Interstitial and catarrhal to catarrhal-purulent bronchopneumonias were the most common histological findings. Peribronchial lymphoid cell accumulations occurred frequently, as time passed from onset of infection. Antibodies against M. bovis were detected in blood serum of infected animals by means of film inhibition, as of the 3. week from infection, and by means of indirect haemagglutination, as of the 4. week from infection.
In a population of 40 patients with coronary artery disease the overall incidence of spontaneous ischemic episodes during 24-h Holter monitoring could be significantly reduced with ISDN 120 mg ret. and ISDN 120 mg plus Diltiazem 120 mg ret. However, the intraindividual day-to-day variability of ischemic episodes on three consecutive days of Holter monitoring is taken into consideration, an intraindividual reduction of ischemic episodes of at least 97% is required to separate a true therapeutic effect from the considerable spontaneous variability.
iv-DSA is an excellent method for detecting suspected stenosis of the renal arteries. In essential hypertension among 19 patients a frequency of 15.8% was found, in patients with accelerated hypertonus (n = 23) the percentage of renal artery stenosis was twice this rate (30.4%). In case of a positive or unclear outcome of iv-DSA, intraarterial angiography with ever ready PTRA is advisable.
The accuracy of ST-segment analysis by means of the Marquette-Laser-Holter system was compared with conventional ECG registration during ergometry. In 26 patients with angiographically confirmed coronary heart disease conventional chest leads and long-term ECGs were recorded simultaneously during standardized exercise. Simultaneously registered ST-segments in V5 and Holter CM5 were compared, with the results correlating well (r = 0.91) for any recorded abnormal repolarizations.
Epiretinal and vitreous membranes of different etiology, e.g., in diabetic retinopathy, following retinal detachment, trauma or inflammatory processes, show a similar morphology. The exact composition of the extracellular matrix and the pathogenesis of these membranes remain uncertain. The presence of collagens, type I-IV, laminin, and fibronectin can be shown by means of immunofluorescence with affinity-purified antibodies. Collagen type V was revealed by SDS-polyacrylamide-gel electrophoresis. These proteins of the extracellular matrix have diverse properties and functions in the membranes, as is discussed. Despite great similarities in morphology, there are some differences in the matrix, seemingly dependent upon the etiology of the membrane.
Seventy-nine patients with angiographically documented coronary artery disease were studied with exercise ECG and Holter ECG for ischaemic ST segment changes. Fifty-four patients (68.3%) had ischaemia on exercise, 48 patients (62.0%) had ischaemic ST segment depression during Holter monitoring. Twenty-four (30%) of the patients with a positive exercise test and 30 (61%) with a positive Holter ECG were asymptomatic during the test, 83.7% of the total count of 456 episodes of spontaneous ischemia during Holter monitoring were silent. Forty-four patients (55.7%) had ischaemic ECG changes during exercise and Holter ECG, 20 patients (25.3%) were negative on both tests. Ten (12.7%) had only a positive exercise test and five (6.3%) only a positive Holter ECG. The sensitivity of Holter monitoring for the detection of ischaemia in patients with coronary artery disease is comparable to the sensitivity of the exercise ECG.
The analysis of ST segment changes during Holter monitoring is one important diagnostic method for detection and diagnosis of silent myocardial ischaemia. To assess the specificity and sensitivity of ST segment alterations as a diagnostic tool, 106 healthy medical students (43 females, 57 males, aged 18-36 years, mean age 26 +/- 4 years) and 26 children (14 females, 12 males, aged 12-17 years, mean 14 +/- 3 years) with no history of heart disease and normal findings during physical examination were studied by exercise stress test and Holter monitoring. Criteria for exclusion were a history of hypertension, diabetes mellitus and ST segment alterations during conventional 12-lead ECG. Due to these criteria, eight volunteers had to be excluded from the study. The exercise stress test (maximum work load protocol) revealed no pathological ST segment depressions. During Holter monitoring seven episodes of ST segment depressions (greater than or equal to 1.0 mm planar or downsloping, duration greater than or equal to 1.0 min) were found. Typical ST segment depressions detected by Holter monitoring may be found in healthy subjects. Therefore this finding has to be considered cautiously as a diagnostic tool for evaluation of patients with suspected coronary heart disease.
On the occasion of a routine medical check-up 256 out of 1100 individuals with an accumulation of coronary risk factors were screened for silent myocardial ischaemia by exercise testing and Holter monitoring. Of these individuals 5.5% had a pathological exercise test, 7.4% had ischaemia-like events on the Holter ECG, 11.3% had at least one pathological test, but only 1.6% had ischaemic signs in both ECG tests. The outcome of the ECG tests appears to be independent of the type and the total number of risk factors. To date, 13 of the 29 individuals with a positive test have undergone thallium myocardial imaging: only three individuals had signs of ischaemia. Holter monitoring and exercise ECG show comparable results in this population. The pathological ECG findings were only partly confirmed by the thallium test. The follow-up will show the prognostic significance of the ECG changes.

100 healthy medical students were studied with 24-h Holter monitoring for ST-segment evaluation. Six recordings (1.8% of males and 11.6% of females) contained at least one episode of horizontal or downsloping ST-segment depression of at least 0.1 mV or more and 1 min duration in the V-5-like lead. Since ST-segment elevations (in 73% of the recordings in the V-5-like lead, and in 40% in the V-2-like lead) and discordant (negative) T-waves associated with ST-segment depressions (in 31% of the recordings in the V-2-like lead) were commonly seen, these ECG findings have to be considered as nonspecific. During exercise tests using a protocol of maximal work load, not one of these healthy individuals displayed typical ST-segment depressions indicative of myocardial ischemia. Therefore, typical documented ST-segment alterations in Holter-ECG recordings should be used with caution when observed in individuals with suspected coronary heart disease, particularly when they are female.
