Brain spatula with transparent tip: technical note.

A newly developed brain spatula with transparent tip for brain retraction is introduced. The high-molecular polymer plastic material is used only for the tip of the new spatula whilst rest of the spatula is made up of the ordinary malleable metal. The transparent nature of the spatula tip helps us in observing the retracted brain vessels and cranial nerves in continuity with the main operating area. The extent of distortion as a result of the retraction can be directly observed assisting in prevention of an inadvertent injury. The new brain spatula with transparent tip is helpful for microneurosurgery under high magnification. Various shapes and sizes of the spatula can be used.

Serum enzymes in head and neck cancer. IV: 5-nucleotidase.

Serum 5-nucleotidase levels have been estimated in a group of 50 patients with head and neck cancer. The mean value was significantly higher in patients compared to the controls. In patients with non-malignant growths, the activity was comparable with the controls. The increase was higher in patients with proliferative lesions than those with ulcerative growths. Enzyme activity was found to be increased with the advancement in the stage of cancer. The rise was comparatively higher in patients with cervical metastasis. After radiotherapy, a gradual and significant reduction of serum 5-nucleotidase activity was observed.

Serum magnesium levels in patients with head and neck cancer.

Serum magnesium levels have been estimated in 25 patients with head and neck cancer. The results have been compared with a group of 25 healthy controls. In cancer patients the mean value was significantly reduced when compared with the control group. A progressive, and significant, increase in serum magnesium concentration was observed following radiotherapy.

Serum phosphohexose isomerase levels in patients with head and neck cancer.

Serum phosphohexose isomerase (PHI) levels were estimated in 28 patients with head and neck cancer. The mean value was significantly higher when compared to the controls. There was no difference in mean PHI value with respect to the character of the lesion or with the histopathological type of growth. The activity was increased with the advancement of the stage of cancer. With radiotherapy, a gradual and significant decrease in serum PHI activity was observed.

Thorny foreign bodies of upper airway.

Twenty cases of unusual thorny foreign bodies (seeds of Xanthium strumarium) in laryngo-pharynx area are reported. The aetiopathogenesis, clinical features and management are briefly discussed.

Effect of bromhexine on nasal mucus clearance in chronic maxillary sinusitis.

Nasal mucus clearance (NMC) was studied in seventy patients with chronic maxillary sinusitis. Forty-five patients were treated with oral administration of bromhexine tablets along with oral antibiotics and nasal decongestants. Twenty-five patients received the same treatment but without bromhexine to evaluate the results. NMC was also studied in hundred healthy controls.
