A general practitioner's guide to emergency services.

Emergency services are a diverse group of agencies that have evolved in response to local needs. Dealing with emergency services at an accident site can be difficult for medical officers who are unfamiliar with the services. The best way of improving this situation is to meet with the emergency services first and prepare by joint training with them.

Doctors and the ambulance services.

Ambulance officers are now highly trained professionals with a detailed knowledge of emergency medical conditions and trauma. The medical practitioner, however, should still be seen as the leader of the medical team, both in the field and in the supervision and development of an effective ambulance service. Patient care will be improved through the development of team work, which is a function of mutual respect dependent on understanding the other person's skills, abilities and responsibilities. This article contains an overview of the ambulance officer's skills and responsibilities.

[Needs of the psychiatric patient population in secondary and tertiary prevention: point of view of a clinician].

The concept of need, discussed from many points of view, remains necessary to the planning of health services. The author tries to define psychiatric needs in a clinical perspective, limiting his approach to secondary and tertiary prevention. The critical points supporting the clinical decision permit the choice of fundamental criteria which allow one to identify and describe the psychiatric needs of a given population. Using this methodology a typology of those needs is formulated in a way which is acceptable in a multidisciplinary approach.
