[Presenting problem: abdominal pain].

The Saxon Study for General Medicine (SESAM) investigated the reasons why patients consulted the general physician, what diagnoses were established, and how the patients were subsequently treated. In the majority of cases, the reason for the abdominal complaints was located in the gastrointestinal or urogenital tract, in the presence of infections or psychosomatic problems. Gynecological problems must also be considered, while diseases other than gastrointestinal are of no significance for the differential diagnosis of abdominal complaints in the general physician's office.

[Collaboration between the specialist in general medicine and pediatrics in the rural area with special emphasis on informational relations].

An analysis is made of the scope of health care performances provided by family practitioners and paediatricians to children in a mountainous community (of the Erzgebirge), with special regard to the informational relations existing in the community. The survey is, in the main, a two-stage interval investigation. At the first stage, a description is given of the high share the family practitioner has in the health care performances provided to children (preventive care: 100%; curative care: 95.4%, about 60% of which require the occasional collaboration with the paediatrician). At the second stage, an informational sheet is used, which not only permits complete feed-back information from the paediatrician but also increases the referral rate, multiplies the back referral rate and improves the quality of health care in general. This model is recommended for use by analogous territories.

[DNA content of lymphocytes and mononuclear tumor cells in Hodgkin's disease].

Thirteen lymph node biopsy specimens with Hodgkin's disease (six cases of the nodular sclerosis type; six cases of the mixed cellularity type; one case of the lymphocytic depletion type) were studied with scanning cytophotometric measurements. The DNA content of small lymphocytes, large lymphocytes, atypical mononuclear cells and Hodgkin cells was measured. The sizes of the nuclei and mitotic indices were also measured. There were no lymphocytes with aneuploid DNA stemlines. Large lymphocytes showed proliferative activity which is possibly reactive, although its neoplastic character cannot be excluded. Hodgkin cells exhibited aneuploid values in seven cases and atypical mononuclear cells in only four cases. The nuclear sizes and the DNA content of the atypical mononuclear cells ranged between the values of lymphocytes and Hodgkin cells. The mixed cellularity type showed higher DNA values, more frequently occurrence of aneuploid stemlines and a higher frequency of mitotic figures than did the nodular sclerosis type. The results confirm the different grades of malignancy of the various histopathological categories of Hodgkin's disease.
