Double-hadron leptoproduction in the nuclear medium.

The first measurements of double-hadron production in deep-inelastic scattering within the nuclear medium were made with the HERMES spectrometer at DESY HERA using a 27.6 GeV positron beam. By comparing data for deuterium, nitrogen, krypton, and xenon nuclei, the influence of the nuclear medium on the ratio of double-hadron to single-hadron yields was investigated. Nuclear effects on the additional hadron are clearly observed, but with little or no difference among nitrogen, krypton, or xenon, and with smaller magnitude than effects seen on previously measured single-hadron multiplicities. The data are compared with models based on partonic energy loss or prehadronic scattering and with a model based on a purely absorptive treatment of the final-state interactions. Thus, the double-hadron ratio provides an additional tool for studying modifications of hadronization in nuclear matter.

[A comparison of respiratory muscle strength, pulmonary function tests and endurance in patients with early and late stage ankylosing spodylitis].

BACKGROUND: Ankylosing spondylitis (AS) is a multisystemic disease in which pulmonary function is altered owing mainly to the restriction of chest wall involvement. A restrictive ventilatory defect has been extensively reported. This has been suggested to be a consequence of reduced mobility of the thoracic cage. Respiratory function in AS shows a typical restrictive pattern but pulmonary compliance, diffusion capacity, and arterial blood gases are normal. OBJECTIVE: The objective of the present study was to compare pulmonary function tests (PFT), respiratory muscle strength (MIP, MEP) and endurance (MVV) in early and late AS. METHODS: A total of 35 patients (30 males, 5 females) took part, all of whom met the New York criteria for AS. Patients were divided into two groups for the comparison of early (disease duration <10 years, 20 patients) and late (disease duration >10 years, 15 patients) manifestations in pulmonary function tests, respiratory muscle strength and endurance, dyspnea score, chest expansion, and BASFI score. In addition, 21 healthy controls were compared with the AS patients. Measurement of chest expansion was performed in all subjects. Pulmonary function tests were performed by spirometry. Respiratory muscle strength was evaluated by a mouth pressure meter (MPM). Functional status was assessed by BASFI in all AS patients. RESULTS: There was no significant difference in body mass index between the groups. The FVC and FEV(1) were significantly lower in late AS (p=0.003, p=0.03, restrictive ventilatory defect ). Chest expansion was significantly lower in late AS (p<0.05). There was no significant difference for MIP or MEP values between late AS, early AS and the controls (p>0.05). Endurance (MVV) was significantly lower in late AS patients (p=0.05). Although the BASFI and dyspnea scores were higher in late AS, they did not reach significant levels. In addition, age was negatively correlated with MIP and MEP in late AS (r=-0.733; p=0.02, r=-0.667; p=0.05). CONCLUSION: This study demonstrates that FVC and FEV(1) (hallmarks of a restrictive pattern), MVV (endurance) and chest expansion are especially involved in long-standing AS. Therefore, improvement of the thoracic cage should be taken into consideration, especially in early AS. These patients should be encouraged to make regular respiratory exercises for preventing the limitation of chest expansion and also improving cardiopulmonary fitness and respiratory endurance.

Strange-quark contributions to parity-violating asymmetries in the forward g0 electron-proton scattering experiment.

We have measured parity-violating asymmetries in elastic electron-proton scattering over the range of momentum transfers 0.12 < or =Q2 < or =1.0 GeV2. These asymmetries, arising from interference of the electromagnetic and neutral weak interactions, are sensitive to strange-quark contributions to the currents of the proton. The measurements were made at Jefferson Laboratory using a toroidal spectrometer to detect the recoiling protons from a liquid hydrogen target. The results indicate nonzero, Q2 dependent, strange-quark contributions and provide new information beyond that obtained in previous experiments.

Evidence for direct CP violation in B0-->K+pi- decays.

We report evidence for direct CP violation in the decay B0-->K+pi(-) with 253 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEKB e(+)e(-) collider. Using 275x10(6) BB pairs we observe a B-->K+/-pi(-/+) signal with 2140+/-53 events. The measured CP violating asymmetry is A(CP)(K+pi(-))=-0.101+/-0.025(stat)+/-0.005(syst), corresponding to a significance of 3.9sigma including systematics. We also search for CP violation in the decays B+-->K+pi(0) and B+-->pi(+)pi(0). The measured CP violating asymmetries are A(CP)(K+pi(0))=0.04+/-0.05(stat)+/-0.02(syst) and A(CP)(pi(+)pi(0))=-0.02+/-0.10(stat)+/-0.01(syst), corresponding to the intervals -0.05<A(CP)(K+pi(0))<0.13 and -0.18<A(CP)(pi(+)pi(0))<0.14 at 90% confidence level.

Observation of a narrow charmoniumlike state in exclusive B+/--->K+/-pi+pi-J/psi decays.

We report the observation of a narrow charmoniumlike state produced in the exclusive decay process B+/--->K+/-pi(+)pi(-)J/psi. This state, which decays into pi(+)pi(-)J/psi, has a mass of 3872.0+/-0.6(stat)+/-0.5(syst) MeV, a value that is very near the M(D0)+M(D(*0)) mass threshold. The results are based on an analysis of 152M B-Bmacr; events collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance in the Belle detector at the KEKB collider. The signal has a statistical significance that is in excess of 10sigma.

Precise measurement of B meson lifetimes with hadronic decay final states.

The lifetimes of the B(0) and B- mesons are extracted from 29.1 fb(-1) of data collected with the Belle detector at the KEK B factory. A fit to the decay length differences of neutral and charged B meson pairs, measured in events where one of the B mesons is fully reconstructed in several hadronic modes, yields tau(B(0)) = 1.554+/-0.030(stat)+/-0.019(syst) ps, tau(B-) = 1.695+/-0.026(stat)+/-0.015(syst) ps, and tau(B-)/tau(B(0)) = 1.091+/-0.023(stat)+/-0.014(syst).

Observation of large CP violation in the neutral B meson system.

We present a measurement of the standard model CP violation parameter sin2 phi(1) based on a 29.1 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric-energy e(+)e(-) collider. One neutral B meson is fully reconstructed as a J/psi K(S), psi(2S)K(S), chi(c1)K(S), eta(c)K(S), J/psi K(L), or J/psi K(*0) decay and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time intervals between the two B meson decay points, we determine sin2 phi(1) = 0.99+/-0.14(stat)+/-0.06(syst). We conclude that we have observed CP violation in the neutral B meson system.

Measurement of B(0)(d)-B_(0)(d) mixing rate from the time evolution of dilepton events at the upsilon(4S).

We report a determination of the B(0)(d)-&B_(0)(d) mixing parameter Deltam(d) based on the time evolution of dilepton yields in Upsilon(4S) decays. The measurement is based on a 5.9 fb(-1) data sample collected by the Belle detector at KEKB. The proper-time difference distributions for same-sign and opposite-sign dilepton events are simultaneously fitted to an expression containing Deltam(d) as a free parameter. Using both muons and electrons, we obtain Deltam(d) = 0.463+/-0.008 (stat)+/-0.016 (syst) ps(-1). This is the first determination of Deltam(d) from time evolution measurements at the Upsilon(4S). We also place limits on possible CPT violations.

Measurement of the CP violation parameter sin2 phi(1) in B(0)(d) meson decays.

We present a measurement of the standard model CP violation parameter sin2 phi(1) (also known as sin2beta) based on a 10.5 fb(-1) data sample collected at the Upsilon(4S) resonance with the Belle detector at the KEKB asymmetric e(+)e(-) collider. One neutral B meson is reconstructed in the J/psiK(S), psi(2S)K(S), chi(c1)K(S), eta(c)K(S), J/psiK(L), or J/psipi(0) CP-eigenstate decay channel and the flavor of the accompanying B meson is identified from its charged particle decay products. From the asymmetry in the distribution of the time interval between the two B-meson decay points, we determine sin2 phi(1) = 0.58(+0.32)(-0.34)(stat)+0.09-0.10(syst).
