Measurement of tibial torsion by computer tomography.

A CT procedure for objective measurements of tibial torsion independent of axial rotation in the nearby joints is described. Transverse sections in defined planes of the tibia permit easy calculation of normal and abnormal congenital or posttraumatic angles of torsion. In 69 limbs normal tibial torsion was 40 degrees +/- 9 degrees. In a series of 42 limbs with complicated healing of a fracture of both bones of the leg it is shown that tibial maltorsion is a deformity which in most cases leads to arthrosis of the ankle joint.

[Computer tomographic findings in sacral destruction].

The diagnostic significance of computerized tomography in the diagnosis of destructive and deforming processes of the sacrum is demonstrated by means of 69 examinations of 55 patients. The results are compared with those obtained by means of conventional roentgenography, including tomography and bone scintigraphy. It is confirmed that recent CT scanners are the most sensitive instruments in existence for the visualization of affections of the sacrum in respect to identification and extension.

[Caroli's syndrom in ultrasound and CT (author's transl)].

Until a few years ago diagnosis of congenital saccular intrahepatic dilatation of bile ducts (Caroli's syndrome) was established intraoperatively or postmortem only. Intravenous cholangiocholecystography and intraoperative cholangiography will often furnish insufficient information. Preoperative diagnosis has become possible for some time now via percutaneous transhepatic and endoscopic retrograde cholangiography. Basing on a case history it is shown that non-invasive diagnosis of Caroli's syndrome has now become possible without the risk of a possible life-threatening cholangitis relapse. This is the merit of new techniques such as sonography and computerized tomography.

[A computer tomographic method for the determination of tibial torsion (author's transl)].

A computer tomographic method is described for measuring tibial torsion in vivo. The basis of the method depends on transverse scans of the tibia through the knee and ankle joint region by means of which it is possible to establish normal values and abnormal posttraumatic or in congenital torsion. Traumatologists, as well as orthopaedic surgeons, require reproducible measurements, since a detorsion operation may rectify deformities which would lead to degenerative joint changes. A review of previously available methods with torsiometer or conventional radiography shows the limitations of these methods.

[Cobalt teletherapy of the carcinoma of the urinary bladder (author's transl)].

A three-year survival rate of 40% of a group of 287 patients was achieved by a standardized Co-60 teletherapy. This survival rate and the radiogenic late effects observed over a ten-year period are compared with results communicated in literature. Important prognostic factors were the findings of a pretherapeutic urogram, the tumor localization, histologic findings, the stade and the surgical proceeding. In this connexion, the W.H.O. classification containing the stades of penetration and the degrees of malignity proved to be valuable. Taking into consideration the own results and those found in literature, the authors propose a therapy depending on the stade and based on modern diagnostic methods and a reliable histologic classification.

[Primary diagnosis and postoperative course follow-up of inflammatory bone lesions of the spine. Conventional roentgen diagnosis and/or computerized tomography?].

This paper presents a comparison of the diagnostic value of CT studies and conventional radiological diagnosis, based on 46 CT studies, in patients with inflammatory bone lesions of the spine (n = 20) before and after surgical interventions (n = 12). In cases with a tentative clinical diagnosis of an inflammatory bone lesion, CT will not supplant conventional radiological diagnosis as the roentgenologic method of first choice. The superiority of CT is based on its ability to demonstrate intraspinal, paravertebral, and intervertebral complications. Osseous incorporation of spongiosa parts and the healing of paravertebral and intraspinal complications can be assessed more easily and accurately with CT.

[Pre and postoperative computerized tomographic diagnosis in tumors of the shoulder girdle].

33 CT-investigations of 23 patients with malignancies of the shoulder girdle were analyzed. In 80% of the surgically treated bone tumours of 17 patients the presence and extend of soft tissue infiltration and of osseous destruction could be delineated. The size of the 6 soft tissue tumours was better demonstrated by CT than by any other radiologic procedure. As CT is the most reliable noninvasive method to visualize the extend of a tumour of the shoulder girdle it is a valuable aid in treatment planning. Diagnostic pitfalls and results of follow-up studies are discussed.
