Search for invisible decays of eta and eta' in J/psi --> phi eta and phi eta'.

Using a data sample of 58 x 10(6) J/psi decays collected with the Beijing Spectrometer II detector at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, searches for invisible decays of eta and eta' in J/psi to phi eta and phi eta' are performed. The phi signals, which are reconstructed in K+K- final states, are used to tag the eta and eta' decays. No signals are found for the invisible decays of either eta or eta', and upper limits at the 90% confidence level are determined to be 1.65 x 10(-3) for the ratio B(eta-->invisible)/B(eta --> gamma gamma) and 6.69 x 10(-2) for B(eta' --> invisible)/B(eta' --> gammagamma). These are the first searches for eta and eta' decays into invisible final states.

Observation of a broad 1-- resonant structure around 1.5 GeV/c2 in the K+K- mass spectrum in J/psi-->K+K-pi0.

A broad peak is observed at low K+K- invariant mass in J/psi-->K+K-pi(0) decays found in a sample of 5.8x10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. The statistical significance of the broad resonance is much larger than 5sigma. A partial wave analysis shows that the J;{PC} of this structure is 1--. Its pole position is determined to be [1576(-55)(+49)(stat)-91+98(syst)] MeV/c(2)-i/2[818(-23)(+22)(stat)-133+64(syst)] MeV/c(2). These parameters are not compatible with any known meson resonances.

Measurements of the branching fractions for psi(3770)-->D(0)D[over ](0), D+D-, DD[over ], and the resonance parameters of psi(3770) and psi(2S).

We measure the branching fractions for psi(3770)-->D(0)D[over ](0), D+D-, DD[over ], and non-DD[over ] to be (46.7+/-4.7+/-2.3)%, (36.9+/-3.7+/-2.8)%, (83.6+/-7.3+/-4.2)%, and (16.4+/-7.3+/-4.2)%, respectively. The resonance parameters of psi(3770) and psi(2S) are measured to be M_(psi(3770))=3772.2+/-0.7+/-0.3 MeV, Gamma_(psi(3770))(tot)=26.9+/-2.4+/-0.3 MeV, and Gamma_(psi(3770))(ee)=251+/-26+/-11 eV; M_(psi(2S))=3685.5+/-0.0+/-0.3 MeV, Gamma_(psi(2S))(tot)=331+/-58+/-2 keV, and Gamma_(psi(2S))(ee)=2.330+/-0.036+/-0.110 keV. We also measure the light hadron R value to be R(uds)=2.262+/-0.054+/-0.109 in the energy region from 3.660 to 3.872 GeV.

Investigation of resonant modes in thin microcavities by using electromagnetic theory.

A biharmonic differential equation for 3D thin microcavities with uniform thickness is investigated by use of electromagnetic theory, whose exact solution is determined to govern the electromagnetic field distribution inside the thin microcavities. The resonant field patterns of a thin microdisk and thin rectangular microcavity are obtained accordingly. The governing equation can be verified by comparing the results of the thin microdisk presented with the approximate ones in the literature. The fourth-order partial differential equation and its exact solution should be useful in possible applications of the thin microcavities for optical resonators in laser optics and optical devices.

Observation of two new N* peaks in J/psi-->ppi-n and ppi+n decays.

The decay J/psi-->NNpi provides an effective isospin 1/2 filter for the piN system due to isospin conservation. Using 58x10(6) J/psi decays collected with the Beijing Electromagnetic Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron Positron Collider, more than 100 thousand J/psi-->ppi-n+c.c. events are obtained. Besides the two well-known N* peaks at around 1500 MeV/c2 and 1670 MeV/c2, there are two new, clear N* peaks in the ppi invariant mass spectrum around 1360 MeV/c2 and 2030 MeV/c2 with statistical significance of 11sigma and 13sigma, respectively. We identify these as the first direct observation of the N*(1440) peak and a long-sought missing N* peak above 2 GeV/c2 in the piN invariant mass spectrum.

Observation of a near-threshold enhancement in the omega(phi) mass spectrum from the doubly OZI-suppressed decay J/psi-->gamma(omega)phi.

An enhancement near threshold is observed in the omega(phi) invariant mass spectrum from the doubly Okubo-Zweig-Iizuka-suppressed decays of J/psi-->gamma(omega)phi, based on a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. A partial wave analysis shows that this enhancement favors JP=0+, and its mass and width are M=1812(+19)(-26)(stat)+/-18(syst) MeV/c2 and Gamma=105+/-20(stat)+/-28(syst) MeV/c2. The product branching fraction is determined to be B(J/psi-->gammaX)B(X-->omega(phi))=[2.61+/-0.27(stat)+/-0.65(syst)]x10(-4).

Mapping of hereditary mixed polyposis syndrome (HMPS) to chromosome 10q23 by genomewide high-density single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) scan and identification of BMPR1A loss of function.

BACKGROUND: Hereditary mixed polyposis syndrome (HMPS) is characterised by colonic polyps of mixed histological types that are autosomal dominantly inherited and eventually lead to colorectal cancer (CRC). Study of the molecular basis of HMPS will enhance our knowledge of the genetic basis of the mixed polyposis-carcinoma sequence in both hereditary and sporadic CRC. METHODS/RESULTS: We performed a genomewide linkage search on 15 members of a three-generation HMPS family using the GeneChip Human Mapping 10K Array and identified a 7 cM putative linkage interval on chromosome 10q23. Subsequently, 32 members from two HMPS families were typed with nine microsatellite markers spanning the region and the linkage was confirmed with a maximum multi-point logarithm of the odds (LOD) score of 4.6 (p<0.001). The 10q23.1-10q23.31 haplotypes segregate with the disease in both families. We screened for mutations in four candidate genes within the linkage region and identified an 11 bp deletion in the bone morphogenesis protein receptor 1A (BMPR1A) gene in one family. CONCLUSIONS: Our results indicate that BMPR1A mutation accounts for HMPS. The data suggest that inactivating BMPR1A can initiate colorectal tumourigenesis via the mixed polyposis-carcinoma sequence.

Observation of a resonance in Chi(1835) in J/psi --> gammapi+ pi- eta-.

The decay channel J/psi --> gamma(pi)(+)pi(-)eta is analyzed using a sample of 5.8 x 10(7) J/psi events collected with the BESII detector. A resonance, the Chi(1835), is observed in the pi(+)pi(-)eta invariant-mass spectrum with a statistical significance of 7.7 sigma. A fit with a Breit-Wigner function yields a mass M = 1833.7 +/- 6.1(stat) +/- 2.7(syst) MeV/c(2), a width Tau = 67.7 +/- 20.3(stat) +/- 7.7(syst) MeV/c(2), and a product branching fraction B(J/psi --> gammaChi) . B(Chi --> pi(+)pi(-)eta) = [2.2 +/- 0.4(stat) +/- 0.4(syst)] x 10(-4). The mass and width of the Chi(1835) are not compatible with any known meson resonance. Its properties are consistent with expectations for the state that produces the strong pp mass threshold enhancement observed in the J/psi --> gammapp process at BESII.

Observation of a threshold enhancement in the plambda invariant-mass spectrum.

An enhancement near the m(p)+M(Lambda) mass threshold is observed in the combined pLambda and pLambda invariant-mass spectrum from J/psi-->pK(-)Lambda;+c.c. decays. It can be fit with an S-wave Breit-Wigner resonance with a mass m=2075+/-12(stat)+/-5(syst) MeV and a width of Gamma=90+/-35(stat)+/-9(syst) MeV; it can also be fit with a P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance. Evidence for a similar enhancement is also observed in psi(')-->pK(-)Lambda;+c.c. decays. The analysis is based on samples of 5.8x10(7)J/psi and 1.4x10(7)psi(') decays accumulated in the BES II detector at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider.

Observation of the decay psi(2S)-->K0SK0L.

The decay psi(2S)-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L) is observed using psi(2S) data collected with the Beijing Spectrometer at the Beijing Electron-Positron Collider; the branching fraction is determined to be B(psi(2S)-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L))=(5.24+/-0.47+/-0.48)x10(-5). Compared with J/psi-->K(0)(S)K(0)(L), the psi(2S) branching fraction is enhanced relative to the prediction of the perturbative QCD "12%" rule. The result, together with the branching fractions of psi(2S) decays to other pseudoscalar meson pairs (pi(+)pi(-) and K+K-), is used to investigate the relative phase between the three-gluon and the one-photon annihilation amplitudes of psi(2S) decays.

Observation of a near-threshold enhancement in the pp mass spectrum from radiative J/psi-->gammapp decays.

We observe a narrow enhancement near 2m(p) in the invariant mass spectrum of pp pairs from radiative J/psi-->gammapp decays. No similar structure is seen in J/psi-->pi(0)pp decays. The results are based on an analysis of a 58 x 10(6) event sample of J/psi decays accumulated with the BESII detector at the Beijing electron-positron collider. The enhancement can be fit with either an S- or P-wave Breit-Wigner resonance function. In the case of the S-wave fit, the peak mass is below 2m(p) at M=1859(+3)(-10) (stat)+5-25(syst) MeV/c(2) and the total width is Gamma<30 MeV/c(2) at the 90% confidence level. These mass and width values are not consistent with the properties of any known particle.

Temporal trends of organochlorine pesticides in the Canadian Arctic atmosphere.

Temperature normalization (TN), multiple linear regression (MLR), and digital filtration (DF) were used to analyze the temporal trends of an atmospheric dataset on organochlorine pesticides (OCs) collected at the Canadian high arctic site of Alert, Nunavut. Details of these techniques have been presented before (Environ. Sci. Technol. 2001, 35, 1303-1311). Both the TN and DF methods revealed that the majority of OC pesticides declined over the 5 years of study, except endosulfan I and several of the pesticide metabolites, including dieldrin and p,p'-DDE. In comparison to studies conducted in the Great Lakes, atmospheric levels in the Arctic were less dependent on temperature, although seasonal variations were apparent. Generally, levels in the winter were lower than during the rest of the year. A notable exception was p,p'-DDE. Many compounds also showed a second minimum in concentrations during June/July and possible explanations are presented to account for this. The estimated first order half-lives for the decline in OC concentrations were generally found to be comparable or slightly longer than those obtained at temperate locations, with the exception of alpha-HCH, which displayed a much longer half-life in the Arctic (approximately 17 yrs). Sporadic increases in heptachlor as well as increases in the ratio of trans- to cis-chlordane suggest episodic input of chlordanes between 1995 and 1997, especially during the winter.

Variance component linkage analysis indicates a QTL for femoral neck bone mineral density on chromosome 1p36.

Osteoporosis is a common condition characterized by reduced skeletal strength and increased susceptibility to fracture. Eight million Americans over the age of 50 have osteoporosis of the femoral neck. The most important risk factor for osteoporosis is low bone mineral density (BMD), and several epidemiological studies have shown the importance of genetic factors in determining variability of BMD. An initial genome screen in seven large pedigrees suggested that a candidate region conferring susceptibility to low BMD of the femoral neck was located on chromosome 1p36. We have now confirmed and extended this finding by analyzing nine microsatellite markers spanning a 40 cM interval across the candidate region in an expanded sample of 42 families. Heritability of femoral neck BMD was estimated as 0.51 +/- 0.13 in these families, after accounting for the effects of age, sex, body mass index, height and weight. Variance component linkage analysis yielded a maximum multipoint LOD score of 3.53 for linkage of femoral neck BMD to a quantitative trait locus (QTL) located near marker D1S214. The associated empirical P-value by simulation analysis was equal to 0.0001. The results strongly support the hypothesis that a major QTL controlling femoral neck BMD is located on chromosome 1p36.2-p36.3, and further analysis of candidate genes in this region is warranted.

Order parameter of MgB(2): a fully gapped superconductor.

We have measured the low-temperature specific heat C(T) for polycrystalline MgB(2) prepared by high pressure synthesis. C(T) below 10 K vanishes exponentially, which unambiguously indicates a fully opened superconducting energy gap. However, this gap is found to be too small to account for T(c) of MgB(2). Together with the small specific heat jump Delta C/gamma(n)T(c) = 1.09, scenarios such as anisotropic s-wave or multicomponent order parameter are called for. The magnetic field dependence of gamma(H) is neither linear for a fully gapped s-wave superconductor nor H(1/2) for nodal order parameter. It seems that this intriguing behavior of gamma(H) is associated with the intrinsic electronic properties other than flux pinning.

Are PCBs in the Canadian Arctic atmosphere declining? Evidence from 5 years of monitoring.

A long-term database of weekly air concentrations was examined to establish temporal trends of PCBs in the Arctic atmosphere. Several methods were employed to reduce the intra-annual variability allowing the elucidation of longterm trends for a selection of congeners at Alert located in the Canadian Arctic. These methods included temperature normalization (TN), multiple linear regression (MLR), and digital filtration (DF). Estimation of the slope (m) resulting from the linear regression between the natural logarithm of the partial pressure in air versus reciprocal temperature (In P = m/T + b), required for TN and MLR, proved difficult due to the poor correlation with temperature experienced forthe majority of congeners. Values of m were considerably lower than those obtained from temperate studies, implying that regional air-surface exchange plays a minor role in supporting the observed air concentrations in the Arctic. The lighter congeners generally showed very low slopes, and some even showed positive correlation with 1/T. This might be a result of their relatively fast reaction rates with OH radicals following the onset of 24-h sunlight in spring. Use of DF (in combination with TN and MLR) revealed declining trends for several of the lower chlorinated congeners in the high Arctic atmosphere, with estimated first-order half-lives, t1/2, ranging from approximately 3 to 20 yr. Declining trends of the lower congeners probably reflect falling levels in source regions, as a result of long-range transport to this Arctic site. There were no apparent trends for the higher chlorinated congeners (penta-substituted and above), exceptfor PCB 180, in marked contrast to temperate studies, indicating a lag time for decline between the Arctic and source regions.

Comparison of sib pair-based approaches for identifying quantitative trait loci underlying asthma in the Busselton families.

The goal of this study is to determine the linkage relationship between IgE levels and the 269 microsatellite markers using the Genetic Analysis Workshop 12 Busselton data set. Analyses were carried out using both traditional and new Haseman-Elston methods, the maximum likelihood quantitative trait locus estimation (MLE QTL) method and the nonparametric (NP QTL) method. Our analyses confirmed some of the signals reported by Daniels et al. [Nature 383:247-50, 1996]. We also observed that several significant signals reported in the original report became insignificant (D6S76 and D11S96) and several new signals showed up after the data were reanalyzed using the new Haseman-Elston method, the MLE QTL method, and the NP QTL method. Based on the original and the current analyses, we recommend that follow-up studies of three regions including D7S2250, FCER1B, D11S901, and six markers on chromosome 16 be given higher priority.

Accuracy and sensitivity of detection of activation foci in the brain via statistical parametric mapping: a study using a PET simulator.

Statistical parametric mapping (SPM) is currently the most widely used method for analysis of functional activation images. This paper reports a quantitative evaluation of the sensitivity and accuracy of SPM, using a realistic simulator of PET image formation, which accounted for the main physical processes involved in PET, including attenuation, scatter, randoms, Poisson noise, and limited detector resolution. Activation foci of the brain were simulated by placing spheres of specified activities in particular locations. Using these data, the sensitivity and accuracy of SPM in detecting activation foci was measured for different versions of the SPM spatial normalization method and for an elastic warping method referred to as STAR (spatial transformation algorithm for registration). The STAR method resulted in relatively better registration and hence better detection of the activation foci. A secondary goal of the paper was to evaluate the improvement in detection sensitivity obtained by applying an atlas-based adaptive smoothing method instead of the usual Gaussian filtering method. The results indicate some limitations of statistical parametric mapping, assist in the correct interpretation of the SPM maps, and point to future research directions in functional image analysis.
