The perceptual prominence of fundamental frequency peaks.

Five perception experiments were conducted that investigated how the perceived prominence of F0 maxima in accented syllables in Dutch is affected by the variation of F0 minima that is supposed to relate to variation in global pitch range. The purpose of the first two experiments was to test the predictions of a model in which the reference line is directly given by an interpolation between observable F0 minima. The results showed that the model was inadequate, and confirmed earlier research suggesting that the reference line is calculated in a less direct way. The next three experiments investigated the role of the F0 of the unaccented portions of speech at the beginning ("onset") and at the end ("offset") of the contour, and show that only the (low) onset is used to calibrate the reference line. The results also suggest that longer onsets affect the abstract reference more than do shorter onsets.

Prominence lent by rising and falling pitch movements: Testing two models.

Two experiments are reported in which a pitch-level difference (PLD) model for prominence perception [Hermes and Rump, J. Acoust. Soc. Am. 96, 83-92 (1994)] is subjected to further tests. The model holds that the contribution of pitch to the perceived degree of prominence is proportional to the difference in pitch level between the vocalic nuclei of the accented and the previous syllable. In experiment I, the influence of stretching and compressing the utterance in time was assessed. It was found that the predictions made by the model were not fully supported by the data. An alternative model was developed according to which pitch movements resynthesized in the same register lend equal prominence when pitch levels on the upper declination lines in the stimuli are equal. These two models gave different predictions when the lower declination lines are different. This was tested in experiment II. The results which are more or less between the predictions by the two models suggest that low pitch levels play a smaller role in prominence perception than high pitch levels do.

Effects of toxic pollutants on indicator germs in large-scale solid-waste ecosystems.

A report is given on investigations with large-scale refuse lysimeters. It is demonstrated how pathogenic bacteria behave after implantation into such artificial ecosystems. The influence of toxic chemicals such as cyanides, phenols, heavy metals, and pesticides was of particular interest. The investigations described relate to the practical situation within different types of landfills to which toxic pollutants have been added by various techniques. The results obtained with the aid of suitable indicator bacteria do not agree completely with those obtained in small-scale investigations.
